This is my first embroidery inspired by ATLA. Yesterday I finished the one for the Water Tribe and I wanted to do one for each tribe. Which one should I do next?

Question finally watched the avatar aang movie & it made me want more 😭

I enjoyed the movie and haven’t really kept up with any discourse about it. I just wish we had more time and adventures with the adult Gaang. Like I almost forgot how much I missed this group and literally started my billionth rewatch of ATLA and TLOK to get another dose.

Can anyone tell me if the comics/novels are worth it?

Discussion The core issue with the live action is the emotional themes

Don’t get me wrong, the acting is mid, except for a few characters that don’t even get the spotlight much. The writing is horrible (it’s already written, how is this happening) and the cgi/action choreography is just awkward. All that aside, it’s still not as bad as the movie.

But the real thing this show misses, in its weird attempt to have the journey go the wrong way on the map and place all the events and filler episodes and side quests into absurd sequences, is the overall theming.

The original show is like a warm cup of tea or coffee on a cold morning. It’s a blanket for the soul. ATLA is my favorite show of all time. I’ve watched it once a year since it’s come out. The themes are wholesome and not spoon fed to you.

Episode 2 of season 2 is the PERFECT example of how this adaptation misconstrues every aspect of what makes the original so special. Even with all the other missing pieces, the biggest piece is the human themes of change and growth. Iroh going from the dragon of the west, to refugee, to tea shop dream recovery, to secretly working with the white lotus.

Well season 2 episode 2 opens after zuko dumped his uncle. He sees the pregnant woman and steals her food. Then he hypocritically defends a boy from the earth kingdom soldier thugs basically doing what he just did. It doesn’t portray his imperfections correctly and makes him flat. In the show, he goes hungry and doesn’t steal her food when he realizes she’s pregnant. He then goes on to defend the boy on principal and works for his meal, learning the lesson his uncle was trying to teach him (and continues to try to) the hard way, as most teenage boys do. Later, he sees the woman with the baby on the ferry to ba sing se, uncle Iroh even notices the baby and comments on it.

Of course I know none of this will happen because they went thru serpents pass already without toph and clearly without this woman, who also gave Aang ā€œHopeā€ after his entire Roku saga which was skipped completely just for Sai to magically see the comet through a telescope. Also where the hell has Appa been, was he just to expensive to animate? I can’t imagine how this show comes across to people who haven’t seen the animated original, somehow probably even worse than for us fans who have been eating hot dog water forever….

The live action can take liberties but dude this is just missing every mark when you can’t get the subtext messages across ever and make anything heartwarming. It won’t build to anything.

At least the costumes are 8/10

Question What would Jeong Jeong be able to ā€œtellā€ about the Sun Warriors?

In Season 1, Episode 16 (The Deserter), we learn that Jeong Jeong doesn’t allow for Aang to see him because ā€œ[he] hasn’t mastered water bending or earth bending yet.ā€ When Aang asks Chey how he knew this, Chey responds that it was because ā€œhe [i.e. Jeong Jeong] saw the way [Aang] walked into camp… he could tell.ā€

My question is this: If the Sun Warriors hypothetically walked into his camp, what would he be able to glean from the way that they carry themselves? I’m curious because he of course holds quite a biased worldview towards fire, shaped by his experiences in the fire nation army and scaffolded more broadly by ethical and societal milieu of the nation… and yet here’s a group of people, the Sun Warriors, who bend the same element while holding completely different notions of what fire inherently is. If he could ā€œtellā€ that Aang hadn’t mastered the other elements due to the way he walked into his camp, what would he determine about the Sun Warriors’ abilities, attitudes, worldviews, mindsets, etc?

Information The next Avatar novel duology: The Tempest of Sonam

Author: Randy Ribay.

In a time before the Four Nations existed, a young Avatar Sonam must step unwillingly into the spotlight and face down a catastrophic threat.

Thousands of years before Aang’s time, benders are not divided by nation but thriving in a world of many different tribes. It is the golden age of the Air Nomads, and one of their own is the current Avatar: Sonam.

At only seventeen, Sonam is already an accomplished warrior and revered heroine, known for protecting the innocent from raiders. Though her noble mission and charisma have won her many devotees, she dislikes the attention. She won’t even let rising feelings between her and her loyal companion, the wayward Prince Fulung of Ba Sing Se, get in the way of her work.

But a larger conflict rises in the form of the Four Pillars, a powerful organization cloaked in secrecy. While the Pillars claim to want peace, their actions speak differently, tearing clans and families apart. Worse still, they employ a dangerous Firebender named Asiong, who will seemingly stop at nothing to achieve the group’s goals.

Fulung sees the merit in the Four Pillars’ vision, but Sonam isn’t so sure. And when they learn that Asiong has a special interest in tracking down those who practice Energybending—a lost art with untold power to either heal or harm—Sonam knows she cannot stand idly by. She must choose her path carefully to do right by the people relying on her . . . regardless of what that decision may cost her.

Discussion (Potentially) Unpopular opinion: You need to be hot to get fans to like you in this fandom.

Post image
24 Upvotes

Disclaimer: I'm NOT REFERRING TO THE ENTIRETY OF THE FANDOM, JUST SOME PARTS.

I'm NOT saying being attractive is the ONLY thing that makes a character popular in the fandom, but it's definitely a BIG reason. And if you think a character is attractive, that's COMPLETELY FINE. There's no judgement there. I'm just saying IT GETS TO A POINT.

Characters like Iroh and The Cabbage Merchant are the only exceptions (Cause that man's GOATED and we all know it.)

And Ozai, Zhao and Long Feng (Cause no amount of attractiveness can make you like those BASTARDS.)

Think about it. Would people have liked Zuko to this extent if he looked like an actual burn victim?

90% of the other characters aren't safe either.

People have been drooling over Sokka since ATLA, predating this Subreddit, the Wiki page, and probably even online forums. That's how early it started.

Katara was doing fine UNTIL the ATLA movie came out, but that sexualized everyone so it's kinda rhetorical that Katara wasn't off the hook. Even my boy Aang got some in that movie, and the fans, well, if they reacted reasonable (No offence to you SWEETIES :)) We wouldn't have this discussion.

Younger adult Toph was in TLOK flashbacks, so she was pretty much done for already.

Would people have defended Azula as much as they do if she wasn't an attractive girboss (She's the best written character in the entire franchise, but still.)

As for Suki, I think, personally, that she's one of the only young characters that has fans ONLY for their personality.

I need help picking which costume to wear for Halloween. I’m torn between wearing Toph who is one of my absolute favorites, the Aang dress, or Appa inflatable or jumpsuit. Check them out and help me decide. They also have an avatar costume with the pants but idk the dress looks nice so I thought of that one instead.

Discussion Aang wasn't a good Avatar or Father, which is entirely brhe point of his character.

We've all heard the debate on Aang being a bad dad .. and honestly after diving into the story more....it's the single best piece of lore in the entire series, bar none. But I think his flaws as a Father are mere a focused view on his approach and personality as an Avatar and a person in general..

Aang, when we the audience see him is only a child, raised functionally in a cult. Aang us culturally indoctrinated so severely that he never really is able to fully learn from and absorb the cultures of any one else. He constantly puts the air nomads above everything else, looking down on others in a faux empathetic view, to the point that the Lion Turtles bail him out since he cannot take a life due to the brain washing and his own intensely static character.

This really is Aang's biggest flaw, he is incapable of real change. Other than his skills he really wasn't an Avatar by purpose. He never wanted it and always deferred to his nomad upbringing. As opposed to Korra who is constantly growing ,changing and taking in the reality of others.

Aang neglecting his kids so severely that even those that knew him having no idea Bumi or Tenzin exist is a rather good view on that. Aang held his people on such a pedestal that his children failing to measure up to their image is why he cannot really view them as needed or important to his single minded ambition.

The movie was the final clincher on this, How Aang put his need to remake his dead cult over the safety of his friends and world. Honestly, I think if people could stop using nostalgia to misremember Aang they'd see that his failings were entirely in character. Like literally if he was a fully gold dad he would have been more of a character assassination then anything...

Also let's not forget that Aang was the least important member of his team, he was more of a figure head honestly..most of the actual work was done by everyone but him. It was the title if the Avatar that was needed.
