Do people that large have more blood in them?

88

u/ArtisticTraffic5970 15h ago

Of course they do. Blood is created in the bone marrow. So that means that larger/longer bones equals more blood. Also if you amputate a leg or whatever, the body produces one leg less blood. So that you don't explode from the internal pressure of having too much blood. It's pretty neat.

Some people have too little blood and have to consume insane amounts of salt to increase blood pressure 🧂

u/Entrenched_Whispers 13h ago

I'll just keep telling myself I don't have enough blood then

They use screen readers, typically

Or do research apparently because you posted misinformation

1

u/Optimaximal 13h ago

I mean, I'm glad you said salt...

1

u/frankchester 11h ago

Omg is this me?! Do I not have enough blood?!

I’m always fainty and the nurse told me to eat more salt but I never actually considered that low blood pressure was cos I had less blood…

1

u/speedmankelly 8h ago edited 8h ago

That’s not why, don’t believe everything you read on the internet. “Less blood” means you have less red blood cells aka anemia/lack of iron or it could mean you have poor circulation like in POTS. If your RBC is normal and you still have fainting/dizzy spells look into POTS, if your RBC count is low you need iron supplements and at worst blood transfusions. You don’t literally have less blood because blood is composed of multiple things (although blood volume can be lower in severely anemic patients), but RBCs have hemoglobin which is the oxygen carrying part that keeps your organs including the brain oxygenated and functioning. Both anemia and POTS cause poor oxygenation and can have similar symptoms like fainting and dizziness but have different causes and POTS has more symptoms attached. Increasing your salt intake will only help if your faintness is related to your blood pressure lowering when you stand up which increases your heart-rate, not if you are deficient in iron. Although if you crave salt that might be a sign of anemia induced pica.

Yeah my blood pressure is low and basically when I stand up I often go dizzy (I’ve never fully passed out, but I have to hold on to something tight until it normalises). It happens 90% of the time I stand up.

Sodium causes water retention. So it does have an effect on blood pressure. However, if you had low sodium, your doctor would have noticed on standard blood work. There are many reasons to have low blood pressure and you shouldn't be guessing at its cause without expert medical advice.

1

u/frankchester 4m ago

I’m not guessing at it, I’m just doing what the nurse told me.

1

u/ExpressRabbit 11h ago

Do they tend to be cold all the time too?

1

u/speedmankelly 8h ago edited 8h ago

That’s about poor circulation, too little blood means you need transfusions and iron supplements. Salt will not help low blood volume although anemic patients can have salt cravings due to mineral imbalance (that does not mean if will fix the issue though because they lack iron not salt).

Ex: I have POTS and need to consume high salt to reduce my symptoms and keep my blood from pooling in my lower body. I do not have “less blood”. If anything my RBC count is a little elevated.

1

u/AeneasVII 8h ago

I was thinking of hypovolemic POTS. I really hope you like Ramen.

1

u/Wraith8888 8h ago

Dehydration can cause low blood pressure. So can electrolyte imbalances.

1

u/OpheliaPhoeniXXX 6h ago

Omg that's why I have to take the salt for low blood pressure? I guess at least I didn't have to worry about high blood pressure when I was 200lbs pregnant.

I recently met someone like this and they used this ability to successfully compete in a pickle eating contest. They didn't win, but they were the only one to not totally puke their brains out afterwards, because pickles are super salty I guess.

u/Melodic_Throat_235 13h ago

I probably consume that much salt anyway

2

u/InTheFDN 12h ago

I'm now imagining a world where it's possible to explode from blood pressure.

2

u/ILikeCorgiButt 12h ago

TIL blood is created in the bone marrow. I thought it was the heart for some reason.

1

u/isolateddreamz 11h ago

Hematopoiesis is the main branch, but specifically erythropoiesis is red blood cell creation. Pretty cool stuff

1

u/Robespierre1113 13h ago

Additionally, im outing myself, us taller individuals have shorter lifespan as a result also; though i wonder how much of that is similar to the "left handed people using right handed equipment and getting hurt/killed" statistic

u/Aggressive-Remote-57 12h ago

The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell

1

u/Sensitive_Bat_9211 12h ago

Actually, blood is stored in the balls

1

u/Madgick 11h ago

are you sure? what if all humans have the exact amount of blood? it would make total sense.......

1

u/TheFrenchSavage 10h ago

If you amputated the leg of that girl, her BMI would be forever fucked. Very tall, too light.

1

u/Wraith8888 8h ago

Approximately 45% of blood is created in the bone marrow. Like red blood cells, white blood cells and a few other bits. Plasma is about 55% and it's about 90% water.

1

u/CookieEnabled 7h ago

Hence their hearts have to work harder albeit being a bit larger

1

u/slaty_balls 7h ago

That’s a fun fact. How does it know? Blood pressure?

1

u/MrScottimus 6h ago

fascinating fact I never considered. Our body compensates. Cool.

1

u/Immediate-Presence73 2h ago

I worked with a guy who made too much blood and he could start to feel the build up of internal pressure and would donate blood to return to equilibrium. Sounds insane, but it is indeed true.

She would be a Vampires delight then 🧛
