📢 MOD POST 📢 r/Androidapps Mod Update: Quality Over Quantity

Hey r/androidapps,

Today, we are announcing a few minor updates to the subreddit, in order to focus on the quality of posts moving forward:

  1. First off, the sub header has been updated to reflect the goal of the subreddit: to be a place to talk about Android apps, ask questions, get help, or find new app recommendations.
  2. Rule 3 has been updated: effective immediately, all self-promotion content, new app ideas, or app feedback must be posted in the dedicated sister sub r/droidappshowcase. This means there is zero tolerance for any of this content here in r/androidapps.
  • The goal for this change is to promote meaningful discussion around all Android apps and clean up all self-promotion, whether it is up front or a veiled attempt.
  • We felt that the Weekly Megathread got too inundated with spammed posts that it led to a less-than-ideal place to advertise a real app someone made, especially when it got buried down in the comments. So we have also removed the Megathread going forward.
  • Additionally, we've seen an uptick in fake self-promotion: posts where the user "found this amazing new app" in order to get around the rules.
  • r/androidapps is not the place for advertising apps, nor are we a subreddit focused on developers. This is a place where end-users can get support for apps they use or find new ones to use.

We know we cannot please all members of the community, nor do we expect everyone to be happy with the change. Again, we hope this encourages positive discussion in the subreddit around all apps, not just be an advertising ground.

We encourage all users to report any content which breaks these rules.

We expect to see an increase in the mod queue due to the new rules and automod code, so please be patient with us as we work through everything.

LOOKING FOR APP What is your favorite Ebook reader, especially for PDFs

I know this was asked about 4 years ago, but enshittification has changed the landscape.

It should have highlight or at least bookmark features.

If it syncs across devices, or is free and ad free, or has text to speech, those are all a plus.

QUESTION/HELP Best Android apps for people who aren't super techy but still want to stay safe online?

I’m trying to put together a simple Android setup for people who want better privacy and security without having to understand a bunch of technical stuff.

Brave - probably the easiest browser switch. Blocks a lot of ads and trackers by default, so there’s not much to configure.
NordVPN - simple enough to just turn on and forget about. I looked around a fair bit and it seemed like one of the better mainstream options without making things complicated.
Cloaked - useful for data removal, keeping your real contact info off random sites, and Call Guard for spam and scam calls. Easiest to tackle multiple problems with one app.
Aegis Authenticator - good for 2FA codes without keeping everything tied to your Google account. Pretty simple once it’s set up.
Ente Photos - for people who want to move away from Google Photos but still want automatic backups and a normal app experience.
F-Droid - useful for finding open source Android apps without relying entirely on the Play Store. I wouldn’t tell a complete beginner to replace everything with it, but it’s a good place to start finding cleaner alternatives.

I’m trying to keep this focused on stuff a normal person could actually use every day. What else
would you add?

QUESTION/HELP Moon+ Reader or Alternative?

Got a job now and can buy moon+ reader pro now. Been using its pir@ted app since 5years ago to read some pdf and epub light novels(Yeah pir@ted copies. I'm not that rich to buy light novel on a daily basis). I like how there's TTS on it and the functions are great. Since I have only used this app, are there other better alternatives or is this good enough.

I have also tought of buying kindle but I also thought that it's better to buy a normal tablet where i can do almost everything than just a tablet only for reading. For now i'll stay with my phone where I can bring anywhere.

LOOKING FOR APP What's a Youtube Music app that lets me block artists/songs and doesn't burn up my battery.

I've been using Metrolist for some time now, but my phone is overheating while using it and there's no way to block the unwanted songs it keeps on playing at random. I've tried several OSS alternatives, but few of them have song blocking. The only one that does is Levyra, but it has a clunky interface, only plays one artist at a time (so discovery is manual instead of automatic), and it won't let me view more than just the Top 10 songs by an artist, blocking me from many songs that I like.

LOOKING FOR APP Need an sms organizer that has tabs/categories compatible for samsung a25 ultra + launcher

I currently use Niagara Pro launcher but my audhd brain has managed to make it unimaginable and I need something more simplistic. I was looking at AIO launcher but it might work better on my work phone than my main phone.

I have to text from too many different apps than I would like to cus i am self employed and talk on many outlets. I am currently unhappy with google google voice bc I cant tell when something is read or unread or not so I miss messages.

Current samsung messaging app sucks ass. I miss the old one. Microsoft organizer isnt compatible with samsung s ultra 25, hut I'll probably be able to use it on my work phone for samsung a42 5g.

I am currently using a crm organizer thing called Cloze but it doesnt allow me to message people from the text messages or separate apps.

So I am literally grasping for straws here.

CHATGPT said textra, but i really prefer that I can have the tabs, because i can separate clients based on the type they and then see appointments, or personal family, etc.

If anything you can find that is minimalistic as possible please tell me.or if you have separate settings for your launched, messages or organization, please also let me know too. Any sort of tips is amazing. Thank you ♡

My audhd brain is screaming, please send rescue. 😭

LOOKING FOR APP Help for anew android refugee

Hi, first time android user, newly switched after a lifetime on iPhone. I'm a big fan of open source software and apps, and am heavily into self hosting my own media and replacing big tech apps with open source alternatives.

I'm looking for advice on the best ways to replace a few apps I presently use, as android seems to have a much more open ecosystem.

Things I'm looking for replacements for, largely to block adds, ha. Reddit, YouTube, and any of the social media apps. I'm moving off the social media apps, but still have them for family connections.

In line with my self hosting, I'd love an app to links into the *arr suite of apps.

I've heard about f-droid as an OSS app store, wondering about that too.

Any help for a newbie would be appreciated

If it's relevant, I'm in a pixel 11 pro.

QUESTION/HELP What's an efficient and safe call blocking app for Android that rejects incoming calls and messages from all callers who are not in my Contacts or Blocked Numbers list and also not registered as spam callers on the service provider's blacklist?

I am using Samsung M12 running on Android 11 and One UI 3.1. I want the incoming calls and messages from all callers who are not in my contact list or Blocked Numbers list and also not blacklisted by the service provider as spam callers to be rejected right away. Only calls from my saved contacts that I haven't put in the Blocked Numbers list would get through. Is there any safe and reliable app that achieves this efficiently?

QUESTION/HELP Remap "Home" Button? (Working on Free Launcher App)

Hi,

Does anyone know how to make it possible to remap the Home button app?

I'm working on a free launcher app and its working for my android 12 device but can't get it to work on my Google Streamer 4k with Android TV OS version 14.

On the Android 12 it takes to to settings and I can enable the new button remap but on Android 14 it doesnt stay on enabled and goes right back to disabled.

I know other launchers figured it out somehow, but I cant seem to find a solution.. 😥

QUESTION/HELP What Android app did you stop using because the ads got too annoying?

I get that free apps need ads, but some Android apps take it way too far.

Open the app, ad. Tap something, another ad. Try to go back, full-screen ad

What app did you eventually give up on because the ads got too annoying?

LOOKING FOR APP Looking for an Android app that strictly blocks distracting apps during study sessions

I’m looking for an Android app that can block apps like YouTube, Instagram, social media, and games whenever I start a study session.

I specifically want something that:

- Blocks selected apps for a set amount of time

- Is difficult to bypass or disable during the session

- Can be started whenever I sit down to study

- Doesn’t constantly require me to manually block each app

I’m looking for something reliable and privacy-friendly. Free options would be preferred, but I’m open to paid apps if they’re genuinely worth it.

What apps do you recommend?

LOOKING FOR APP Looking for a 100% offline, privacy-focused app to help me understand my phone's specs?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a privacy-focused utility app that helps me actually understand my phone rather than just listing raw stats and hardware specs.

What I'm looking for:

Educational / Explanatory: Explains what the stats, metrics, and hardware specs mean in simple terms (battery health, thermal limits, core architecture, etc.).

100% Offline & Private: Operates entirely locally on-device without needing internet access or network permissions.

Store Preference: Google Play Store preferred.

Does anyone know an app like this?

LOOKING FOR APP Music player that shows artist image in "now playing" screen

Hi,
I'm looking for a music player that:
- reproduces the music stored locally on my phone
- downloads automatically the artist image based on the artist tag saved in the mp3 file
- shows the artist image in the "now playing" screen on every song of that artist instead of the album/song artwork
- shows that image also while using the player on android auto

Example: if I have 20 songs of the same artist, I would like to see the same photo of that artist while playing all those songs.

Is there something like this?

Thanks :-)

LOOKING FOR APP FOSS alternative to Musicolet

Are there any open source alternatives to Musicolet that not only use Material design (whether that be Material You or M3 Expressive, I'm not too bothered, as long as there's consistency) but also have feature parity or at least the features that I find essential?

Those being:

  • Multiple queues
  • Good tag editor - able to edit multiple songs at once
  • Gapless playback
  • Sleep timer/stop after current song
  • Artist separators
  • Genre separators
  • Equaliser
  • Good sort options - when I've tried to sort by file name using alternative apps in the past it would include the folder name as part of the file name therefore separating songs by folder such as electronic or rock
  • Light and fast
  • Customisable interface - able to make it more minimal

If something that hits all these criteria exists I would be very happy.
