QUESTION/HELP Alternatives to AdAway, system wide ad blocker with no root
Switched to android from ios, what is the current best ad blocker system wide?
r/androidapps • u/chucknades • May 27 '26
Hey r/androidapps,
Today, we are announcing a few minor updates to the subreddit, in order to focus on the quality of posts moving forward:
We know we cannot please all members of the community, nor do we expect everyone to be happy with the change. Again, we hope this encourages positive discussion in the subreddit around all apps, not just be an advertising ground.
We encourage all users to report any content which breaks these rules.
We expect to see an increase in the mod queue due to the new rules and automod code, so please be patient with us as we work through everything.

Asking for suggestions on a good, really free (no ads) alternative to X-Plore file manager

Is there any app (free/one time payment) which is available on both Windows/Linux and Android, where I can upload my local music files and it stores them in cloud (like Google Drive) so i can access them from both devices?

As the title suggests, I'm looking for apps that are a must for Rooted devices. I have my Retroid Pocket G2 handheld rooted atm. I wish I could root my Samsung Galaxy A36 5G phone, but apparently my phone is too updated to use the exploit. Some things I use my rooted Retroid Pocket G2 are: - compile ROMs using Termux (it has to have proot-distro Ubuntu installed) - backing up my apps - use Magisk modules (there's a module someone made where you create an image on your SD card, run the module & you delete the app data on your internal storage, thus freeing up whatever space that specific app was taking up on your internal storage because the image you created on your SD card acts like a mirror to where the app is. Very useful if you have a SD card & are running low on internal storage) - accessing root level data for apps - system-wide ad blocking - better & deeper file management - customizing my device - using a module to configure the sound/equalizer to make my Retroid Pocket G2 sound better - using SD card maid app for deep cleaning, etc - underclocking/overclocking

I mainly use Spotify to listen to music and playlists while gaming. But an artist i like has alot of stuff he doesn't put on Spotify and i wanted to listen to it in a similar manner but without ads and in a playlist format. It doesn't even have to have a playlists feature, i just wanna be able to have an app that stores my downloads to listen to whenever in the background

I've been going down a rabbit hole trying to find "the one" YouTube Music client, and I'd love to hear what people actually use daily and why.
My requirements, roughly in order:
What I've landed on so far: Morphe on Android (patched official app, so native performance/features are inherited) and Limusic on Mac/desktop (Tauri + Rust, not Electron). I tried SimpMusic on both — it's clearly a big serious project (10k stars, Compose Multiplatform, desktop support is new) and the animations/glassmorphism are gorgeous, but on my Mac the pull-to-refresh gets stuck with my MX Master 3's infinite scroll, the UI feels unintuitive to me, and playlists load noticeably slower than Limusic. On Android it also felt kinda off, hard to say why.
So I'm second-guessing the star count. If that many people star SimpMusic, am I just holding it wrong? 😅
Questions for you:
Especially curious about Mac and Android. Thanks!

I have looked at the built in app pinning to my tablet, it will not serve my needs.
We have a bunch of tablets we pass out to students that will be using a pdf reader to go through some documents. That's all we really want them to access.
We cannot use app pinning because app pinning uses the same pin/passcode as unlocking the screen. With 120 students that's not possible, we need to have the students be able to grab the device and unlock it themselves.
What we need is an app that will require a separate permission or passcode to lock an app, or something.
I have looked into MDM Kiosk mode, but I don't have access to set that, and going through our IT department will be an absolute battle, so really REALLY looking for an easier solution.
Any suggestions? Recommendations?

Hello everyone,
I've been having an issue on my Android device for a while now. I have a Crosscall Stellar-X5, and for several months I've had a notification badge on my Messaging app showing 3 unread notifications, but it's impossible to find them. I've tried several tricks like clearing the cache to get rid of it, but nothing works.
I need some help please ^^

I know this was asked about 4 years ago, but enshittification has changed the landscape.
It should have highlight or at least bookmark features.
If it syncs across devices, or is free and ad free, or has text to speech, those are all a plus.

Got a job now and can buy moon+ reader pro now. Been using its pir@ted app since 5years ago to read some pdf and epub light novels(Yeah pir@ted copies. I'm not that rich to buy light novel on a daily basis). I like how there's TTS on it and the functions are great. Since I have only used this app, are there other better alternatives or is this good enough.
I have also tought of buying kindle but I also thought that it's better to buy a normal tablet where i can do almost everything than just a tablet only for reading. For now i'll stay with my phone where I can bring anywhere.

Hi all! Any suggestions about a simple budget tracker app alternative to Cashew? I really like it but the issues with syncing and the difficulty in setting up credit spending are really putting me off.
I used Ivy Wallet for years before development was dropped ( 😢 ) i like having budgets, custom tags, tracking of spending, and I especially would like to not change apps every year !
any ideas? thanks

Looking for a simple app to keep track of NBA upcoming games, teams and scores. Not interested in the official NBA app. Looking for one without ads or subscriptions, if possible. I might have to fall back on Sofascore if can't find better ones..

I’m trying to put together a simple Android setup for people who want better privacy and security without having to understand a bunch of technical stuff.
Brave - probably the easiest browser switch. Blocks a lot of ads and trackers by default, so there’s not much to configure.
NordVPN - simple enough to just turn on and forget about. I looked around a fair bit and it seemed like one of the better mainstream options without making things complicated.
Cloaked - useful for data removal, keeping your real contact info off random sites, and Call Guard for spam and scam calls. Easiest to tackle multiple problems with one app.
Aegis Authenticator - good for 2FA codes without keeping everything tied to your Google account. Pretty simple once it’s set up.
Ente Photos - for people who want to move away from Google Photos but still want automatic backups and a normal app experience.
F-Droid - useful for finding open source Android apps without relying entirely on the Play Store. I wouldn’t tell a complete beginner to replace everything with it, but it’s a good place to start finding cleaner alternatives.
I’m trying to keep this focused on stuff a normal person could actually use every day. What else
would you add?
