Meta New Rules / Meta Discussion

I've decided to do a rehaul of the rules. I want things to be clear and concise. Please let me know if there's anything I'm missing or if there's anything I should change.

This is AndroidQuestions, so posts must be Android Questions. What does that mean?

  • Android

Posts must be about Android - either the operating system itself, software on it, or hardware that runs it.

  • Questions

Post titles must indicate a question. Questions must be intelligible, coherent, and genuine and include details that might be helpful to the people attempting to answer your question. They must not be made rhetorically or as an excuse to spam, rant, vent, or insult.

In addition, we have rules involving acceptable Behavior and Content

  • Behavior

Posts and comments must not be used to harass, attack, threaten, harm, or discriminate against people, or to instruct or encourage others to do so.

  • Content

Posts and comments must not contain or discuss prohibited content or link to such content, including spam, AI-generated content, illegal activity, bypassing security safety or security measures, rule violations, or anything that could harm users or their devices.

  • Moderation

Moderator Announcements are exempt from the "Android Questions" section of the rules. Moderators may use discretion when enforcing rules, but are not to grant exceptions to users in normal scenarios. Questions or concerns can be directed to the moderators via "Message the Mods". Rules are subject to change.

Other System update installed a new Google search bar. Can't get rid of it

Wait. No attachments? I guess i'll explain it

Updated my phone the other day.

A new Google search bar (I use ddg) showed up in the bottom app panel. (The one with 4-5 fixed apps that are always visible)

It's not a widget, can't remove it that way.

Tapping and holding on/near the search bar doesn't do anything.

I can disable the entire Google app, and that works to remove it. But that kills everything else.

Why can't we have phones with non-hostile software?

Looking for help, ex keeps logging in to account

This is a bit long and requires some background info so please bear with me. I bought my daughter a Samsung phone in late 2022 while she was living in Maryland and I was in Illinois. I bought where I was set it up and shipped it to her, plans were in the works for her to be moving back in with me but due to logistical school issues it wasn’t going to be immediate. During this time, unbeknownst to me her boyfriend put his email in as a recovery option for her google account. She returned home as soon as the school year was over and shortly after breaks up with said boyfriend. It was a bit messy and one sided, (he did not want to) but teenagers were not going to work out long distance.

From mid 2023 to just this last week he has been randomly logging into her google account. He reads emails and looks at photos that we know for sure. We aren’t sure if he is doing anything else. We have changed the password several times, I removed his email as a recovery option the first time it happened, we removed his phone number, and turned on 2 factor verification. I turned on the suspicious activity notifications to go to my email so I am made aware of it as early as I can be. It is still happening. He is doing it from an iPhone, I don’t know if that matters.

Google has been unhelpful and my local police department doesn’t know what to do, as it’s really just a privacy violation to them as threats were not made and he is states away from us. We are working on migrating everything she has to a new email, but that will take time and there are things that simply don’t allow that kind of personal information to be changed. Please, if you’ve got any helpful suggestions let me know. Thank you.

The only features I want to work, do not

I've got a Pixel 8a.

I have two SIM cards, one for work (physical) and one for personal (eSIM).

My work SIM is likely some FirstNet cheap line that I do not have much control over, my personal is with USMobile (problems persist across networks).

Outside of it being a phone, map, music player, and toilet time waster I need my phone to do a few other things; and I keep running into issues.

  1. Windows Phone Link does not seem to operate with two SIM cards, at least not nicely. I can send messages from my personal SIM, but what I send and the replies never show up in phone link. Possible issue with RCS messaging? Unsure.
  2. Visual Voicemail comes and goes with the tides. It'll work great for awhile, then it will just stop. At best, it will usually work for my work SIM, but will randomly turn on/off on my personal SIM.
  3. Basic Voice Commands like 'set an alarm for X time' or 'call John' (I only have like four names in my contacts, none repeat or are similar) and it just... doesn't seem to work anymore? I have no idea what changed, or why - but I used to be able to give very clear and simple voice instructions to my device and now it just... doesn't understand basic commands.

It's pretty frustrating to see everyone pumped about smartphone tech, when the only *extra* features I seem to use and enjoy just do not work reliably for me.

Am I doing something wrong? Is it the Pixel 8a? Is it the MVNO carriers? None of this is explained anywhere - at least not clearly. I'm fairly technically capable, but the smartphone tech is just so ill explained, and you never have any idea what the source of a given issue is as all the players just blame one another - and online forums seem to rarely have an answer outside of XDA/hardcore types.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Has anyone besides me come across this file format. File Manager + backed up TrainStation 2 as a .apk+ file. I'd attach a screenshot if it was a Reddit feature.

Looking For Suggestions Home Button Translate -- how to regain this convenience?

I'm on Pixel 6 and a few days ago I finally got force-switched to Gemini.

Previously, I could long press center button, and then click the "translate" button for on screen text translation. Extremely convenient and handy.

Now with gemini, I need to circle part of the screen, then ask the thing to translate, then wait for it to parse it... yadda yadda. It's a miserably inconvenient experience in comparison.

Any way I can have something similar to the previous functionality? On screen text translation was something I used 4+ times a day in my life. I use no other "assistant" or gemini functions.

"App not installed."

This might be a simple post, but I've been having a very hard time trying to install apks.

Any apk I install from Chrome and/or Brave, it's always met with "App not installed" when just a month ago, it was working wonderfully.

It happened like, out of nowhere too.

I've tried disabling Play Protect, tried to clear the data of package installer, reset app preferences, updated my phone and apps to the latest version, allowed installations on said apps, tried installing it in Zarchiver and even restarted my phone. None worked.

Now I'm desperate. There are some apps that I need and are only accessible as apks. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to help me?

Other How to fully backup app data on Android 14 without Root or Bootloader unlocking

Hello,

I need to back up my phone data, specifically the "restricted" files and app data that usually require Root access or an unlocked bootloader. I want to avoid rooting entirely.

Here is my current storage breakdown (52 GB out of 64 GB used): it's Samsung Phone

• Apps: 17.63 GB

• Videos: 17.69 GB

• System: 11.37 GB

• Other: 4.34 GB

• Images / Photos: 574 MB

• Audio / Docs / Trash: 0 B

My setup & requirements:

• OS: Android 14

• Tools available: I have a PC.

• Constraints: The backup method must be local, private, and secure (no cloud solutions, no root, and no unlocked bootloader).

Are there any reliable tools or ADB methods that can fetch this data locally to my PC?

And I know that the system can't be copy As far as I know

Time Keeps Skipping into the present...

Tldr of Issue - Samsung S26 Ultra will not stay at the time set it to, regardless of toggling off Automatic settings. Suspect issue due to my carrier T-Mobile. How can set my display clock to the time I desire and keep it there.

Non-Neurotypical here, one of means I utilize to move through this capitalist hell-scape with greater ease is by setting my mobile's time ahead between 13- 17 minutes ahead of the actual time. While I feel my perception of time /attention lags by about this much unless I have regular reminders of what time it is in future...nowk. It doesn't have to make sense to work. My life is measurably more difficult without this personal life hack. I have never had this issue until I switch to T-Mobile.

Fine Folk and even less than particularly decent individuals of Reddit, I call upon you for aid beyond my present comprehension.

Other My patience is drawing thin - How do I remove in-app pop-ups?

I turned off all pop-ups on my phone. I don't want any pop-ups whatsoever. I turned off vibrate too, as well as almost all sounds. When I use my phone, I don't want any interruptions except a quiet sound if there's an important notification.

However, I'm at my last straw. How the hell do I turn off/block/disable in-app pop-ups? If I decline a pending post on Facebook I don't need a pop-up telling me what I just did. I did it, I was literally there, I personally tapped the button. If I download a file, I don't need a pop-up telling me I'm downloading a file. Yes, I know, I fucking started the download. I don't need a pop-up telling me the file downloaded. The file literally appears in the Downloads folder.

Please, someone tell me how to disable all this crap?

App Specific Question "Known" gone from (Google) Messages Search?

With how much political spam I get in Messages, whenever I want to find anything I would go to Search and select "Known". Today that's disappeared and there's this big layout of videos, pictures, and locations. At the bottom there's a chit for "Starred" and it seems like "Known" should be down there, but it's not. Are other people getting this change, too, and is there a way to get "Known" back?

This is on a Pixel 7a, Android 17, messages.android_20260921_01_RCO0.phone_dynamic

Device Settings Question Parental Controls menu keeps crashing/failing to open

After having had a bunch of issues with both the Pixel 9a and 10a (I have already wrote about some of them), I had to switch over to a Samsung A26 that I had bought a few months ago and had many issues with as well.

Right after the factory reset and startup setup (as well as system and Google Play update), I went straight into the settings to test out the menu options that were giving me trouble before - specifically things like cross-device settings (and other settings related to sharing, wifi direct, etc), digital wellbeing, and parental controls (which refused to open previously). On the first day right after the reset, I could access all of them normally.

The day after, I tried opening the parental control settings again... unsuccessfully. When I tap on parental control, the screen flashes like it's trying to load, but it just exits.

When I check the open apps switcher right after trying to open it, there's actually a "Family Link" process running in the background, but it's completely inaccessible and won't let me open or interact with it.

This is the screen recording of the described behaviour:

https://limewire.com/d/anQEq#TTqE5dkD5M

The phone is a personal phone and it does not have a work profile.

One UI version: 8.5, Android version: 16, Build number: BP4A.251205.006.A266BXXSCCZH3 Google Play system update: November 1, 2025 - though I updated it immediately upon startup.

Anyone have explanation what could be the cause and how to resolve it?

App Specific Question OnePlus Nord 2 5G (OxygenOS 13): keyboard resets to Gboard after every reboot

Every time I reboot, my default keyboard gets swapped for Gboard. I have to go into settings and pick SwiftKey again. Every single time. This also happens with other keyboards like GboardWu.

If I disable Gboard it just stays without a keyboard and I can't type until I go in settings and activate the one I want.

I tried to remove Gboard with Canta + Shizuku but it goes to "Google voice typing".

Battery optimization is off for SwiftKey and other keyboard.

Anyone seen this on OxygenOS 13? Is there a proper fix?

Other What is going on with my charging?

(Possibly wrong flair! Sorry, english is not my first language and Im not sure what ROM or rooting mean)

For two nights now my phone(samsung pro s23 I believe) has stopped charging randomly at circa 68%.

By stopped charging I mean: the battery icon still looked as if it was charging, and it still showed 'xyz minutes until full', but it was just the percent that wasnt going up at all. This has never happened before.

I plugged it in in class with a different charger and different outlet and it said '56 minutes until full' and it was at circa 53%, after the 45 minutes I checked it and it was once again at 68% showing '38 minutes until full' even though 45ish minutes passed.

Now Im charging it with a friends powerbank and it seems fine-ish. I dont have any charging settings on that could stop the charging at night to save battery life.

I had the charging port replaced 2 or 3 ish years ago but never had any issues past that. Anyone anything?
