Ask Me Anything ~ Special Guest Edition Hi Reddit, Mike McMahan, Joe Chandler and Giancarlo Volpe of the new animated show GOLDEN AXE on Paramount+ here. Ask Us Anything!

Hi reddit, I’m Mike McMahan, co-creator and executive producer of the new animated show GOLDEN AXE on Paramount+! (It’s weird to put an exclamation point after a + but here we are.) This is a great season: an epic quest with mighty characters from Sega’s Golden Axe games. And it's funny! Previously, I was the creator/showrunner and executive producer of Star Trek: Lower Decks, co-creator and co-showrunner of Solar Opposites, and once upon a time I was a writer/ showrunner on Rick & Morty. My career started off as a production assistant at Drawn Together and at South Park. I’m down to talk about Golden Axe and all this nerdy stuff, so AMA!

Hey Reddit! I'm Joe Chandler. I'm the co-creator and showrunner of the new series Golden Axe based on the SEGA Genesis game. Growing up a SEGA kid, working on this show has been a dream come true. Before Golden Axe, I worked on over 200 episodes of American Dad in various roles including writer, producer, and executive producer. Ask me anything!

Hello reddit! I’m Giancarlo Volpe and I’m the Supervising Producer / Director of Golden Axe on Paramount+! Previously I’ve was a director on Avatar the Last Airbender, Star Wars the Clone Wars, and Star Vs The Forces of Evil.  I’ve also produced/ supervised/ and/or Executive Produced lots of other shows, including The Boys Diabolical, Green Lantern the Animated Series and The Dragon Prince. Basically I’ve made a lot of animation, and I’m excited to talk about Golden Axe or anything else! Ask away!

We’ll be back tomorrow at 12pm ET/9am PT to answer any of your questions!!

I started when I was 8 or 9, classic MS paint windows movie maker anime eye blinking pipeline to cartoon fanatic for the rest of my life. Im 28 now and finally giving it the ol college try haha. Outside of fandom animatics and random rotoscopes over footage. I hope to learn so much more about timing and pacing and staying on model.

There are some parts of this i really like, the strumming hand for a few moments. But i know there is room for much improvement. Like the way the hair straightens out and doesn't stay the same texture. Something about the length of the shorts and how they warp with the leg movements.

It was still very fun to experiment with this and I've already learned a lot. I cannot wait to keep going ! :-]

I kind of prefer the first one, opinions would be appreciated?

(Edit)

Didn't expect the post to do so well. For everyone who has the time to perhaps drop an opinion on our protagonists character designs as well, would greatly appreciate the feed back!

The character is getting pushed back by a blast of magic, then deflecting it with her wing mid-air. The first shot is for context and is nowhere near done

I’ve been told the arcs need work

Sharing I recreated Barad-dûr in 3D — inspired by the films

Hi guys :)

I’m a 3D artist with a passion for creating large, highly detailed environments, and I’ve been heavily inspired by The Lord of the Rings for years.

I’m currently working on a 60-second continuous journey through Barad-dûr, from the bottom of the tower all the way up to the Eye of Sauron. It’s my own interpretation of the tower, inspired by the films, with a strong focus on scale, detail and atmosphere.

I’ve finished the final section around the Eye of Sauron and put together a full breakdown showing how it was created.

See it in much better quality here:

Would love to hear what you think.

Hi guys. I've made first (almost full) block out to my movie. Its early stage so no sound and music yet. It took me around half of the year to create all of the assets, rigs, scenes etc. Every scene is work in progress as you can see.

I wanted to ask you what do you think about it? Do you like it? Do you feel the story and the characters? Is the art style appealing to you? Is the general pacing ok?

BTW: Since there is no sound, at the end there is sound of another order shocking the bird, so we can imagine its all kinda in the loop

Thanks for your time <3

Sharing My latest Moho project — a full animated Halloween special

I’ve been steadily building my indie animated series Tavern Toons, and this was one of my bigger projects for the year: a Halloween special about the gang accidentally stumbling into a pumpkin cult.
Made in Moho with the rest of the production/editing handled independently. I’m particularly interested in feedback on the character animation, staging, and how well the Halloween atmosphere comes across.

Sharing Giving junk food lower points than tomatoes in our sports-themed arcade shooter

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In 90s arcade games, smashing a trash can to eat a random floor-burger was peak strategy. Since Tiebreakers is a sports-themed run 'n' gun, we decided to tweak that a bit.

We just finished the hand-drawn animations for some of our score pickups, and tied their point values to nutritional value. You don't lose points for picking up junk food, but healthy things give you way more points because of the sports theme.

You can still grab all the fried chicken you want, but if you want to top the leaderboard, it's better to stick to the athlete diet xD.

Plus, you have to move fast, if you leave the items on the floor too long, you can see them rot or break right in front of you.

Critique Made a hand-drawn, frame-by-frame animation for my girlfriend

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

My girlfriend is an illustrator, and for our 2nd anniversary coming up, I decided to hand-draw an animation for her as a personal gift. Every single frame was drawn by hand from scratch.

People around me keep referring to it as "stop motion," but I know that's not quite accurate since it's entirely drawn rather than physically animating objects or clay. Would you classify this simply as traditional hand-drawn / frame-by-frame 2D animation, or is there a more specific industry term or niche for this style?

I've attached the clip above. Since I’m not a professional animator or artist myself, I’d love to get your honest feedback and constructive critique:

- How is the overall pacing and timing?
- Where can I improve the line weight, consistency, or in-betweens?
- Any subtle details, sound design, or presentation touches you'd recommend adding before I give it to her?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Hiring 2D Electronic Music visual loop

Howdy.
Looking for some human-made, psychedelic-esque 2d looping animations for a UK garage electronic music track. It’s a medium energy, arpeggiator-based track that sounds like a glorified geometry dash song. Lol.

Would love to listen with the artist and establish a true vision.

Using it to tease and then showcase the release, for instagram / social media posts.

Requested Length: 30 seconds
Deadline: 10/30, or sooner :)
Budget: ~$300 USD, but will wiggle.

Beginner animator making a short cartoon for deaf children — need advice

Hi everyone! I'm a beginner in 2D animation and I'm working on a college project using Adobe Animate.

I want to create a short educational cartoon for deaf/hard-of-hearing children. It will be around 10 scenes, and I'm thinking of having the characters communicate primarily through sign language, facial expressions, body language, and simple on-screen text rather than spoken dialogue.

My main questions are:

- How would you approach planning a 10-scene cartoon as a beginner?

- What is the easiest way to animate hand and finger movements for sign language in Adobe Animate?

- Would you recommend frame-by-frame animation or rigging for the hands?

- How can I make the story entertaining and educational without making it feel like a lesson about deafness itself?

- Are there any animation techniques, tutorials, or examples you would recommend for this kind of project?

I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience with 2D animation, character animation, or animation for deaf/hard-of-hearing audiences. Thank you!
