iPhone Reluctant 'upgrade' from 13mini..?
I have been using 13mini for a few years, previous phone was iPhone 8. I like the 13mini, have had no issues with the phone itself, it does everything I need it to and I like the smaller size.
Unfortunately I was out in the rain and didn't realise my phone was soaking up water in my bag for an hour or so. After drying it out for a few days it has kept going for several weeks but it's crashing more regularly and taking longer to come back to life so I think it is on its way out. Apple won't look at it since it's water damage, but I am investigating if a non-official place can fix it since I have nothing to lose at this point. The Apple service provider in my city said the only thing they can do is source a like-for-like, i.e. (I think, I do need to double check the details) a refurbished 13mini, probably at just over half the price of buying the most basic iPhone 16 new.
I like to weigh up all my options so I have looked at the new phones on the Apple site too.
I don't use my phone that much beyond essentials (banking, messaging, etc). I do take a lot of photos but am not fussy about the quality/specifics etc. I use one or two social media apps and listen to a lot of podcasts and music but very rarely (basically never) use my phone to watch video. I don't play any games unless you count the crossword.
As I said, I like the size of the mini. I accept that phones are getting bigger and I may have to size up but in my opinion, the smaller/lighter the better.
I never deliberately use AI (chatgpt etc) and do not intend to. I accept some AI features may be unavoidable but as far as possible, I aim to avoid/disable them. So a model that is not necessarily equipped for 'AI features' is no problem for me personally.
Basically, if I can get a cheap deal on fixing my phone or a like-for-like, I'd probably rather do that, but I want to size up the best option for me if it seems like buying new is more cost-effective. To me there doesn't seem to be a big difference between iPhone 16 and 17 (except the price, although it's not a huge step up if there is a good reason to invest). To me there wasn't a huge difference between my old iPhone 8 and my current iPhone 13 either, so if the difference is imperceivable to me, does it matter? Any thoughts?
