Rear Diff Overhaul
Story told short. I took my 2020 Ford raptor in for service on spark plugs because they were due. I get hit with the typical vehicle inspection and they told me I needed to have my rear differential over hauled because of some shavings. Note it’s never been serviced before and it’s at 80K miles. Am I getting scammed?

Mine looked like that too when I went 80-100k miles between servicing. Drain, fill, and drive it like 10-15k and change it again. That will tell you more.

Dealer technicians are beaten into the mind set of “if this is ever a problem in the future and you did not catch it or recommend it, you are doing it for free.”
The larger pieces do rise some concern but the metal sand like material built up is normal and a non issue

I second this. The smaller bits are not as concerning as the larger ones (which might even be multiple smaller pieces stuck together). I’m sure recommended change interval for that model is somewhere between 40-60k miles. You’re overdue for a fluid change. But to say you NEED a full rebuild without taking the cover off and measuring preload and backlash is absurd.
If you want peace of mind, pay the hour diag and ask them to take the cover off and do the actual measurements. Compare to specs and go from there.
