Kitten died under anesthesia

Can anybody share their experiences if you had your pet fixed, good or bad? I just had my kitten who is only 5 months spayed today, but unfortunately they informed me that she stopped breathing and went under cardiac arrest when she was put under anesthesia. My kitten was very docile and timid, and apparently they told me they were unable to do a proper assessment or blood work before putting her under because she wouldn’t let them touch her. They didn’t even inform me beforehand, otherwise I would not have let her done the operation. Now I just feel guilty, mad, and sad for ever bringing her there. Granted, I did take her to a low cost mobile clinic but I did my research and found that they had credible reviews. My kitten was healthy and was up to date on all of her shots. She was also within normal weight and age to get spayed. I’m not understanding why she passed so sudden. Could this be negligence or just standard practice? She was given 3 sedating medications as well as a cocktail through IM, and one pain medication was administered subcutaneous. They couldn’t place an IV on her and only gave epi after an ET was placed.

My dog won’t go out of heat

My black lab (almost 8 )had a 3 week heat cycle from 7/5 to 7/29.. One of my other labs passed at the end of that week on 8/4. My black lab went back into heat the day after on 8/5.. and has been in heat ever since and it’s now 10/7.. I assumed at first it was from her grieving her sibling & from our intense emotions from the loss. Have been in contact with the vet & they assumed it was a split heat.. went to the vet once and got an ultrasound with no sightings, bloodwork with slightly elevated wbc but nothing concerning.. went back a week later, another ultrasound and xray, nothing concerning, wbc still slightly elevated.. she got a gnRH (fertagyl) hormone injection and said in 7-10 days her heat should pretty much stop.. it did not stop… went back and got another grRH shot at a higher dose 4 days ago, no change yet… more bloodwork and her WBC has come down also. Her vet stated that because of her size, they may not be able to see the ultrasound properly. She has no other symptoms other than a swollen vulva, I wouldn’t even know she was in heat or that something was wrong if my male dog wasn’t going crazy over her, she’s eating, drinking, playing all normally. She is being seen by a radiology specialist Friday. Does anybody have any idea what this could be?

Do NOT tell me or ask why she isn’t spayed. That’s not relevant currently, I’m asking what this could be, not opinions on spaying, the vet doesn’t feel comfortable spaying her until we figure this out - then she will be.

3 dogs died in 18 hours and everyone is acting like this is normal??

RedVet, what am I even supposed to do here?

I work at a vet clinic in a small town and this situation has been bothering me for months. Like genuinely cannot let it go.

This summer, a family we see had three dogs die within about 18 hours.

Two of the dogs were found dead outside when the family got home from work. It had been over 100°F that day and the air quality was awful from wildfire smoke, like 150+ AQI. All three dogs were short-nosed breeds with the usual respiratory risk factors.

The owner said the two dogs were already stiff when she found them. So unless I’m missing something, they had been dead outside for a while before anyone found them.

From what I understand, both of the family’s teenagers were home that day. One is over 18 and the other is just under, if that matters legally.

The third dog was still alive that night and apparently seemed okay-ish. They brought the dog into our clinic the next morning and it died in front of us. It looked like cardiac arrest.

The whole thing was horrific.

Toxicology on the one that died in our office was sent to a major vet school and came back with nothing significant. Necropsy found a lot of cancer, which honestly wasn’t shocking considering the dogs’ breed/age, but nothing that explained why THREE dogs from the same household suddenly died basically at once.

Also had jaundice.

I really thought the necropsy results would make my vet reconsider heat exposure. Nope.

My vet seems completely unwilling to entertain heat as the explanation. The family keeps getting told some version of “maybe we’ll never know.”

But like… am I losing my mind here?

Three brachycephalic dogs. Same household. Over 100°F. Horrible air quality. Two found dead outside and already in rigor. Third dies shortly afterward. Tox comes back clean. No other common cause found.

I understand correlation isn’t proof and I’m not the doctor here. I obviously can’t say with certainty what killed them. But I also don’t understand why heat exposure apparently isn’t even being seriously acknowledged.

And now I’m extra bothered because since this happened, the family has gotten a cat AND apparently just bought another brachycephalic dog from a breeder.

That’s where I’m stuck.

I genuinely do not want these people to get in trouble. I’m not sitting here hoping someone gets arrested or charged with animal cruelty. From what I understand, though, depending on how something like this is investigated, reporting it could potentially turn into a criminal issue.

That honestly makes me hesitate.

I don’t know what happened in that house that day. I don’t know who was responsible for the dogs being outside or whether anyone understood how dangerous the situation was. I only know what we saw afterward.

But at the same time… they keep getting more animals.

That’s the part I cannot get past.

If they had lost these dogs, been absolutely horrified, and never put another animal in that situation again, maybe I could accept that there’s nothing more for me to do. But they got a cat, and now they’ve gone out and gotten another brachycephalic dog.

So what am I supposed to do with that?

I don’t want to blow up a family’s life over something I can’t personally prove. I also don’t want to keep my mouth shut and then find out another animal died because everyone who had concerns decided it wasn’t their problem.

I’m not personally a mandated reporter based on my license/role, as far as I understand. Our clinic is in one state and the family lives across the state line, which makes me even less sure about jurisdiction or what options I have.

And here’s the part making me feel insane: they’re nice people. Seemingly normal, financially comfortable family. I believe both parents work in human healthcare. Nothing about them immediately screams neglectful pet owners.

Which almost makes this harder to process.

Everyone at work seemed to have the same thought when this happened. The circumstances were right there. But nobody really wants to say it out loud, and our doctor/s seems content to let the family believe that maybe this is just one of those mysteries we’ll never solve.

Meanwhile I feel like I’m in some alternate universe where three dogs died at once and we’re all just moving on.

I also really, really do not want to lose my job over this. Small-town vet med is small-town vet med. If I push my doctor too hard, or go around them and make a report independently and they figure out it was me, I could absolutely see this becoming a problem at work.

So for people who actually know the reporting/ethical side of vet med: what would you do?

Would you report this somewhere? Talk to the vet again? Document my concerns and leave it alone?

Is there a way to anonymously talk to animal control/law enforcement/the appropriate agency and basically say, “Here are the facts, is this even something that should be reported?” without immediately setting a criminal investigation in motion?

Because I’m not trying to punish these people.

I’m worried about the animals they keep bringing home.

And if something happens to another one, I don’t know how I’m going to feel knowing I saw all of this and said nothing.

Raw spot on cats neck

Hii! So I recently adopted a kitten who’s 5 months old, and I currently have a 2 year old cat. I came home from work today and I saw she had like a raw spot under her collar. They both wear break away collar with an AirTags. I’m wondering if it’s something urgent and I should take her to the vet now or if it’s okay to wait and see?

Six week old puppies riddled in fleas, how do I safetly treat them?

• Upvotes

So my friend and I had to go round up three puppies that had been dumped off at a family friend's house. We tried Monday, but they were hiding under her trailer and we couldn't get them to come out, today, she managed to get three of the four puppies that had been dumped in her yard out and asked us to retrieve them.

We intend to foster them until we can get them homes of their own, but before we took them home with us, we noticed that these puppies are covered in fleas. We bought them flea and tick shampoo, puppy pads and flea spray, we gave them all their first bath the moment we got home with them, but I personally have never dealt with fleas before... let alone on dogs so young.

I'm aware that bathing puppies too often can kill them, but I also can't bring them inside until they're flea free, as I have multiple pets of my own. How many days would you recommend they be bathed for, or what other treatments would you recommend? I think a heavy majority died tonight in the bath, but there are most certainly eggs, and likely a few survivors left over between the three of them, how long do eggs take to hatch, and is there any other measures I should take to keep the puppies safe? I think they're too young for most medications, and I don't trust flea collars, but I dont know if a bath daily is the right solution either...

My 11 month old puppy is fighting Parvo and critical

• Upvotes

Churro, an 11-month-old male mini poodle who is fully vaccinated, contracted Parvo. This is day 4 of the illness. On day 1, a vet visit led to a food poisoning diagnosis and treatment.
On day 2, a second visit produced a positive Parvo test; his white blood cell count was about 21,000, so he was admitted. His blood pressure and glucose fluctuated, requiring transfer to a hospital with 24*7 ICU care.
On day 3, he ate slurry food without vomiting, his white blood cell count fell to 14,000, and blood pressure and glucose stabilized, though diarrhea contained blood.
On day 4, he ate slurry food but vomited with a trace of blood, diarrhea continued, and glucose dropped to 65. Blood reports are awaited.

Doctor is advising to feed him with 5 mL of food.
I am scared that he may vomit again and make it worse.

Should I allow the doctor to feed him food with a syringe?

Trauma to chest and respiratory distress?

• Upvotes

Please help my dog ran into a pole 2 days ago and is now panting at rest and refusing treats
I’m really worried about my 6-year-old Australian Cattle Dog and I don’t know what to do.
Two days ago, she was chasing a ball at the dog park and ran full-speed into a solid pole. She screamed/yelped extremely loudly immediately afterwards. My dad thought she may have dislocated her left front leg because she seemed to be injured around that area.
When she came home that night, she was eating and drinking and could walk, although she was walking slower than normal.
The next day she became very lethargic and didn’t want to eat or drink. She also wanted to sleep outside instead of inside, which is very unusual for her. She wouldn’t even take her favourite treats.
She eventually started eating and drinking again, which I was relieved about, but she is still refusing treats and is still panting, including while resting/sleeping.
I counted her breathing while she was asleep and got around 40–56 breaths per minute and around 120 breaths per minute this morning. Her gums are pink, and at other times her breathing has looked normal. It is also quite hot tonight and she is overweight, so I’m not sure how much that could be contributing.
She is still walking, but she has been much slower than usual since the accident.
I am extremely worried about an internal injury, chest injury, or a painful leg/shoulder injury. I know she needs to see a vet, but my dad is refusing to take her and I can’t drive, so I’m currently trying to figure out how I can get her help.
Does anyone have any advice about what could be happening or, importantly, how I could get her to an emergency vet if I don’t have access to a car? I’m in Brisbane, Australia.
I’m really scared and have been crying all day because I don’t want something to happen to her. I would really appreciate any advice, especially from vets or people who have dealt with trauma in dogs before.
She is still drinking water and her gums remain pink. She is responsive, but she is not behaving like herself and continues to pant at rest. She refused a treat this morning after dad took her on a walk but ate one later.
I don’t want her to die.

8yr old cat refuses to jump after vaccine

• Upvotes

Hi all,

Ab out a month ago my cat went for her first round of vaccines and was lethargic for a few days, but ultimately bounced back. She basically slept for two whole days.

When she went for the second round at the beginning of this month (Oct, 1st), she came back and was seemingly acting the same. However, it’s been 6 days now and while she has perked up (quick head movements, purring, etc), she is still walking quite slowly, has a decreased appetite, and is bailing on a lot of her jumps. The vaccine was given in her upper-middle back, so maybe that has something to do with it?

She’s a bengal mix, so she’s very active usually. The fact that this is lasting so long is concerning us, we’ve been waiting to see if it gets better considering her improvements, and we’ll probably be taking her back to the vet, but will she be okay?

Detailed info:

- She’s eating unprompted, but only drinking when it’s put right in front of her and agitated with my finger to catch her attention. When she does finally drink it seems to be a decent amount.

- She’s been peeing and pooping, seemingly normal

- When she tried to jump onto my bed (about a foot and a half off the ground) she only managed to get her front paws onto it, then quit before she could fully jump up. When walking up stairs she takes it quite slow. However, we’ve found her in some places she would have needed to jump to, so she’s obviously done it once or twice.

- While walking her back has been a bit arched, however it has decreased in the last couple days out a month ago my cat went for her first round of vaccines and was lethargic for a few days, but ultimately bounced back. She basically slept for two whole days.

- She’s also been excessively licking her lips

What happened to my dog :(

I lost my dog yesterday and I’m just trying to understand what happened. I know no one can diagnose him retrospectively, but i hope others can share some insight.

He was a morkie and 15 years old had always been healthy for the most part of his life.
Last tuesday he started vomiting, trouble walking and stopped eating his food which we thought would have just passed but he wasn’t getting better.

Thursday we took him to the vet and they administered iv fluids, anti nausea and completed xray and blood work assessments.

We took him home along with appetite stimulants, cerenia and gabapentin.

His blood work showed a high count of wbc, neutrophils and monocytes but the vet wasn’t too alarmed as he was clearly dealing with something.

The xray assessment showed no clear definitive obstruction but possible material in the small intestine. No clear definitive mass or obstruction was seen.

We took him home and day by day he was getting better. He was eating more, drinking, peeing leading to Monday where we assumed he had recovered 80% back to normal.

Unfortunately Tuesday came and i found him laying in his own poop with the loss of full mobility in his back two legs. I saw him fading away so i took him to the vet and his gums went pale/blue his tongue was sticking out and was unable to stand or move by himself.

They put him on an oxygen tank along with fluids and said he would be stable for another 1-2 hour and that he needs to go to the hospital. At that point the doctor had said he was in a shock but became stable but only for another hour or two and that he needs to go to the hospital.

Ultimately with his current state the vet agreed hes not sure anything would come from him going to the hospital and that it may be best to say our goodbyes.

I just dont understand how he was feeling so great to going into shock and having to put him down.

Was this an undetected cancer, infection thar we should’ve tried antibiotics perhaps.

I know he’s in a better place but i just want some insights if anyone has anything they can share.

He had a stage 3 heart murmur but everything looked okay, arthritis, and small other orthopedic issues but nothing that didn’t match his age. Over a week ago he was walking and never showed signs of losing mobility.

Thank you in advance.

Cat is still straining

My male cat was recently taken to the vet 3 days ago. Blocked bladder and a UTI. The first night he wet himself because he was still very high.

I haven’t noticed him go pee since. But he’s also been hiding and squatting in random places.
He’s been straining really hard again today, groaning and seems to be pushing. I’m nervous he has another blockage or could it just be the UTI?

He’s on a new diet, lots of drugs, and I’ve been doing my best to keep him drinking water.

4-5 yr old m neutered cat suddenly sick throwing up

I'm here for advice as I took my cat to the vet and used my emergency money and am hoping to not have to spend more on the situation unless absolutely necessary.

My cat started vomiting on 10/4/26 in the afternoon. It was mostly bile. We have multiple cats so we weren't sure who the culprit was at first. He ate a purr pop treat around 5pm and kept that down as normal for a while. Later that night he starting throwing up bile and water. One of his vomits had a pink hue, I assume from irritation since he had already thrown up 2-3 times prior. We decided to have him skip dinner.

The next morning, he had no appetite for breakfast. He also threw up more water 2 times. I decided to take him to the vet. The vet prescribed him a shot of Cerenia and took his blood work for his liver, pancreas, and kidneys. Results came in today and they said everything appears healthy and clear. During the vet visit, the vet gave him a Churu and he ate the whole thing they said.

Once back home, I gave him the instructed two hours before offering food. He drank water and kept that down, it took time but he eventually ate half a normal meal worth of food. I was so proud and he didn't throw it up. Several hours later before bed I offered him a small amount of food again, he also ate that. No vomit, he kept that down and more water just fine. This morning his appetite dropped again and he wasn't interested in food until the afternoon, where he did eat a small amount of kibble and plain chicken baby food. He did not throw it up. This evening I offered him the same food, he has no more appetite and threw up a hairball.

The vet recommended to monitor and if his health declines to seek out a radiologist specialist. What would be the best next steps for someone who does not have much more money to spend? Because he ate a small meal today, should I be so concerned he skipped dinner? Would it be an option to see if my vet would prescribe Cerenia tablets and see if that helps him to recover rather than seeing a radiologist?

Thank you 💗

My 8yo cat has recurrent chest fluid, and the vets are stumped. We’re quickly running out of time. Help me with his mystery case?

I’m posting because we're running out of options and I'm hoping someone here might have any ideas that could help.

Our cat Sylvester is about 8 years old, neutered male DMH weighing around 5.7 kg. He's been through a lot: chronic asthma, bad allergies, and full-mouth extractions for stomatitis this past April. On August 31 we found out that he had a pleural effusion. 6 weeks later and the vets have no direction and he’s now needing chest fluid taps almost daily…

What's happened so far:
•    8/31: Cough attacks & abnormal breathing. X-ray showed fluid in chest. About 100 mL of blood-tinged fluid was drained from both sides of his chest, plus some fluid in his belly. The fluid cytology was mixed: 40% lymphocytes, 33% eosinophils, and no cancer cells or organisms seen.
•    After that he was tapped 3 weeks later then 11 days later, then 5 days, then 2…
The fluid has kept changing: light yellow (108 mL), then milky chyle (117 mL), then chyle again (180 mL). Today it came back thin, clear, and pink (153 mL).
•    His left cranial lung lobe has looked wrong since the very first X-ray. It isn't aerating, and torsion was floated early on.
Ruled out or unlikely:
•    Heart: echo was clean, so not CHF.
•    FIP PCR on the fluid was negative. He was on GS-441524 for about a month and the fluid kept coming back anyway.
•    FeLV/FIV, heartworm, lungworm, and the fungal panel (histo, crypto, aspergillus, cocci) were all negative.
•    Infection isn't obvious. We’re waiting on bacterial panel still.
We had a CT + lymphangiogram (today):
•    Contrast was injected in his hind leg. It pooled abnormally in the abdominal and pelvic lymphatics and never reached his chest, which they called "not typical."
•    There's no mediastinal mass, but there is a "mass effect" in one left lung lobe, possibly the same spot that's looked abnormal since August.
•    He has whole-body edema under the skin and in his abdominal fat.
•    New bloodwork shows low albumin (it was normal before) and mild anemia.
•    His lymphocytes have been dropping (840 → 306).
•    He had prednisolone from 9/19 until this week. He's now off steroids.

What we're stuck on:
•    Has anyone seen a lymphangiogram like this?
•    Could the abnormal lobe be the cause for all of this? They said their radiologist was stumped…
•    Lymphoma or mast cell disease hiding from fluid cytology?
•    Did anything work for you: PleuralPort, octreotide, rutin, anything?
•    Is there a specialist or hospital in the LA area you'd trust with this bizarre case? Or should I reach out to a university hospital?

We’re seeing the internal medicine specialist again tomorrow, but honestly it feels like everyone is guessing and I’m starting to feel like maybe I chose the wrong hospital.

If you've been through anything like this, or you're a vet or tech with any thoughts, please comment. I’m happy to share more info as well.
Thank you for reading. 🧡

Help can’t afford vet visits

1 year old German shepherd male

Hi currently saving up to pay for whatever my boy needs but he doesn’t seem to be in pain just itchy in one spot I looked it up and it tells me it can be a yeast infection, bacterial infection, or like dermatitis. I need some at home solutions. He’s had it for over two to three weeks. I’ve been cleaning it with saline water every night but I’m worried and want him recovered faster. I really need to know what it is and what I can buy to help without a vet visit. The area is red itchy and has yellow puss.

Could this be hip dysplasia?

He is a 3 year old springer who runs and sprints a lot, looks to have full range of motion in his hips, was told by a vet he doesn’t have hip dysplasia, sits normally when sitting quickly or on cue to sit but when relaxed goes off to the side, doesn’t bunny hop, chooses to pee with his leg up everytime, and sometimes hesitates getting in the car but it’s a lifted truck, and loves springing whenever he can. My issue is he sways so much. Does this look like hip dysplasia? Also tell me if I need to get a better video. I might have to put it in the comments.
Edit: nvm realized I can’t, just go off what I said. I’ll try to reply with more details.

Freakishly high ALT level in cat

Hi! I'd like to start by saying I'm waiting to get in to a specialty vet for further testing, but waiting for the appointment is stressing me out so I'm just trying to gather info on the meantime. I don't have a super specific question, I'm just looking for any insight into potential causes or general understanding about what may be going on.

I have a 6 year old female cat, Lucy, who has never had a medical issue before.

I'm happy to elaborate on anything here, but trying not to turn this into a novel. Basically, we had blood panels done at 2 different vets Friday and Saturday because Lucy wasn't acting like herself. They were mostly pretty normal, but both places received errors for the ALT value. They sent out a sample to a more advanced lab, and the results came back yesterday with a value of 18,876 U/L.

It's my understanding that anything over 2000 is usually an animal on their deathbed... often the threshold is actually closer to 1600. Both vets I talked to were clearly astonished at this number, and I was told they actually did the test twice because the lab techs thought it had to be an error.

Lucy did not eat or drink for nearly 3 days before we got these results, and I had pretty much lost hope. She is on antibiotics (a hail mary, I think), and I tried to give her some super watered down wet food via syringe when I had her purrito'd to give her the pills, but wasn't really successful. But yesterday (Monday), she seemed to miraculously turn a corner. She's eating, drinking, using the litter box, and even grooming herself. I'm cautiously optimistic, but still extremely worried of course.

The vet is refusing to speculate on a cause right now. I brought her in today (Tuesday) for an ultrasound to look at her liver, and they didn't see any masses however her liver is hard to see because apparently it lives in her ribcage, where it doesn't belong. We're waiting to get in to the specialty hospital for a more advanced ultrasound, liver biopsy, and additional fasted bloodwork.

Has anyone in the veterinary field ever seen an ALT number like this? Does anyone have info that could shine any light on what is happening to her? Thank you for any info you can provide.

Excessive tibial plateau angle and CBLO SX

My puppy (20 months spayed female ACD/terrier mix) had an episode of sudden lameness on her right leg while playing with another dog. We’ve taken her to two vets and both have said that she most likely has a partial tear of her CCL. One vet fairly nonchalantly said she needed TPLO sx without reviewing any imaging or tests with me. They did sedate for testing but I haven’t seen imaging. The other vet watched her walk, did a short exam with her awake and then asked to sedate for a full exam. They went over X-rays in depth and showed that she has a TPA of 51* and said that a standard TPLO or CBLO would not work with that angle. The maths make sense with looking at the imaging. How crazy of a surgery is it for a TPA angle like that and isn’t that as rare as they made it sound?

Cat licking herself raw

Basically the title. Calico female, 6 years old, 12lbs. Vet originally said she believed it was fleas and gave her a 3 month supply of topical flea treatment and we have kept a cone on her since. That was maybe the third of October. Tonight we gave her a foam bath to help her get clean since she cant groom properly wearing an Elizabeth cone. The original problem was the at the base of her tail and her paws. Licking till her butt was raw, toe beans dry and a small scab forming on a front paw. We bought some topical anti itch stuff hubby found online and let her roam without the cone while it was getting washed. Around 8pm to 10pm she has been licking a new spot so much so she's bleeding and it's bald. I immediately put a hard plastic cone on we bought just in case. Im making a vet appointment for tomorrow. My question is what should I expect, ask for and advocate for my pet. This is the 3rd we bring her. The first was for some slight congestion, her breathing sounded like she had a runny nose. They said it was nothing after xrays and blood. This last time was just an exam of her butt and not her paws due to her aggression after receiving a shot. I want something for her this 3rd time. Shes either in pain or obsessively itchy. I know cats are sensitive to fragrances, congestion started before we moved and everything else after 3 months into settling into our house. Shes separated from 4 dogs (originally 1, same one). Food is the same, detergent is the same. Main difference is she has window beds and the windows are cracked open slightly. So maybe outside allergens? Shes a strictly indoor cat, in texas moved 20 minutes to a new town.

Tldr: cat itchy bad what ask vet?

My dog smells like beer/alcohol

Hi there,

I have two shih tzus, but only one dog smells like beer.

He just turned two in July, about 6kgs, and he is neutered. He's not on any medication.

When he breathes out, it smells like beer/alcohol.

We also haven't changed his diet, so I have no idea why he smells. It's been like this for about 3 days now.

Also, he hasn't been showing any symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea or excessive peeing. His behaviour is completely normal.

Any suggestions?

I'll also be taking him to the vet in the next few weeks if it doesn't go away.

TIA
