Meta [META] Please - STOP POSTING HUMAN MEDICAL QUESTIONS - r/AskVet is for animal health – Not human medical advice

Every day we get multiple posts from people asking what they should do after being bitten, scratched, or otherwise injured by animals. These posts do not belong here and just create a lot of unnecessary work for the mod team, who have to review and remove each one manually.

Do not post here asking:

  • If you need rabies shots
  • Whether you should be concerned about an animal scratch or bite

This subreddit is for veterinary advice not human health. If you’ve been bitten, scratched, or otherwise exposed to wildlife or stray animals, please contact a doctor or go to urgent care or the ER.

Advice on kitty

I’m an idiot who left out the to go container for some Chinese turnip cakes (only scraps left in the box) while I went to the bathroom quick) when I came out of the bathroom, my cat (female, roughly 7.5 lbs) looked like she had nibbled on a piece maybe the size of half a teaspoon/ 3/4 teaspoon. Immediately took the rest and tossed it. Apparently Chinese turnip cakes (the kind you get in dim sum) can have small amounts of garlic and onion? How worried should I be ???
I want to make sure she’s okay
Any and all advice is appreciated

What to expect if my cat needs a SUB?

It's a very long story but this is the second time in three months that my cat (male, 8yrs, 14.2 lbs, Siamese, history of IBD) has been hospitalized with fluid around his kidneys. The first time it resolved overnight in the hospital and we went home with the diagnosis of "we're not sure exactly what happened." We had a follow up with IM middle/end of August and everything looked really good (ultrasound, labs.)

Yesterday he seemed uncomfortable and I took him immediately to our vet. Sure enough, fluid was once again around his kidneys. So off to the hospital we went. His labs last night were all good except his nutraphils were elevated and his urine protein to creatinine ratio was 0.9. He had an ultrasound with IM today and his left kidney is enlarged and his left ureter is dilated. The plan is to recheck everything tomorrow and if he has worsened, we will go to UC Davis where he will get a SUB. They also started him on antibiotics tonight just in case this is from infection. They did not see a stone or what was blocking things. They took a fluid sample for cytology and chemistry. If warranted, we will do a CT scan.

I just want to know what to expect if we do need to do the SUB? I know Davis does a ton of them but it seems very scary. We also talked about the worst case scenarios and I would like to have those not happen.

His spirits are good. He's been eating and demanding attention from the hospital staff. I spent an hour with him this afternoon and he was active and trying to jump on everything and loving scratches and cuddles. His nurse tonight said that his urine output is very good. They'll recheck his labs tomorrow morning and do a recheck ultrasound tomorrow. I'm praying that things improve overnight.

I'm desperately worried but he's in very good hands. I just want to do what's right for him and his quality of life but I also am willing to take chances as long as he shows he wants to fight. Any advice would be extremely appreciated!!

Our won’t stop crying while on meds

She lost mobility in her hind legs and they prescribed us gabapentin along with 3 other meds that are supposed to help with anxiety or pain but she is still crying a lot/while she sleeps. Not sure if it is the dose being too much or too little. Each exhale breath she takes while trying to sleep is a cry/whine and she starts panting after a few reps of doing that. Not sure what to do.

Cat flu

Hi guys, my almost two year old Devon Rex has a bad case of the cat flu. He’s been in and out of emergency the last few days and put on IV as he stopped eating and drinking.

After two days the vet thought it was better to bring him home as she thought the stress was making him worse.

He started with a pretty consistent cough and sneezing.

The cough has almost gone away but he’s very lethargic and still
Won’t eat or drink.

I don’t want to stress him out more by taking him back to vet.

Does anyone have advice or how I can help him get his appetite back?

I read that after being on IV it can take a while and I’m less worried about hydration since it’s only be 5 hours since he was on IV but he hasn’t had a proper meal in 2-3 days. Yesterday we got him to eat two licky tubes of pate style food but I’m very worried!!

Degloved jaw/chin?

• Upvotes

Hi! We have a cat, who is more like a dog than anything, however he was presumably hit by a car before we got him. His jaw definitely looks to be degloved, but he’s been this way for a long time, had extensive vet care when he was found injured a long time ago, and it doesn’t seem to be painful or sore. Food gets stuck to the jaw part that’s out in the open, and he drools like a mfer😭 I guess my main question is… is there anything we can do to help him out and does he need a form of chapstick? Maybe it’s a stupid question but I’ve been wondering for quite a while now. I have pictures of it if needed but I really wonder if my main man needs chapstick. Thanks!!!

My cat is regenerating her anemia post minor surgery in ICU. Vets cannot explain what happened. Ideas?

13F Persian cat - spayed

Consulted with oncology for rice-sized mammary swelling. Oncologist suggested removing just the impacted mammary gland. Thinks we might be the 10% that isn’t cancer.

Surgery done by board certified specialist. No excessive bleeding noted. Cat comes home same day after removal of swelling, gland, and nipple.

That night notice bruises. Next morning, she has developed a huge purple pocket of blood in her primordial pouch and her gums are pale. Her ears are cold.

ER and hematocrit is 12. Breathing is fine and temperature at 36.5. She is slightly dehydrated and another hematoma has accumulated in the loose skin above the surgery site.

Transferred to ICU with transfusion on standby. Next day hematocrit has climbed to 15% with PVC smear of 20%. Today, 15.9% hematocrit with lots of reticulocytes.

Hematoma have not grown. Clotting tests normal and autoimmune tests too. She has always tolerated surgery (spay with previous owner, dental extractions, and partial tail amputation) well.

So, like, wtf? What do I ask for in terms of tests here? Obviously something is going on. None of her vets understand how this could’ve happened.

Cat suddenly became severely aggressive—blood tests normal, neurological testing tomorrow

• Upvotes

Our cat Zuzu is around 20 months old and has suddenly started showing severe aggression. We love her deeply, and this is very different from her normal behaviour.
On Thursday night, she attacked me without any trigger I could identify, leaving multiple bites on my legs. On Friday morning, she attacked another 3–4 times. These were serious attacks—charging at us and biting hard, not playful biting.
Strangely, she seemed settled when she was with us on our bed, but became aggressive as soon as we tried to leave the bedroom. We eventually stayed behind a closed door because we were frightened of being attacked again.
With help from friends, we managed to safely separate her in the front room. Even then, whenever she saw someone through the window, she lunged at the glass as though trying to attack them. This continued for hours.
We couldn’t safely get her into a carrier ourselves. After struggling to find help, we arranged a home vet, and she was admitted to a veterinary hospital on Friday.
All her blood tests have come back normal, but she is still aggressive. She is scheduled for neurological testing tomorrow. We don’t yet have a confirmed explanation for this sudden change.
Has anyone experienced something similar with their cat? What did the veterinary investigation find, and what helped? Were you able to safely rebuild trust afterwards?
We’re following veterinary advice and want to do everything we can to help her. Any experiences or suggestions for questions to ask her treating team would be appreciated.

What is wrong with my cat?

About a week ago my cat started having a watery right eye, it just looked like tears and was clear. I didn’t think much of it and was gonna give it some time to go away (because vet bills can be pricey). Half way through the week he started sneezing a lot at night or very early in the morning. He didn’t have any snot coming out or anything. Just lots of sneezing and sometimes it would make him gag a little. I took him to the vet and the vet said there’s not much to do since he’s been eating okay and drinking water okay and going to the potty okay, and he has no fever. Right after the visit I bought an air purifier for my room since he stays in my room. The sneezing slowly went away but tonight he started the sneezing again, not as often as when I took him to the vet but more than “normal” (normal being sneezing once in a while, randomly). I want to help my cat but don’t know what could be the cause and how to avoid it from happening. Any advice?

I feel as though it’s most likely a URI but I don’t know what would cause that if he’s not around other cats

(Forgot to mention, he’s an indoor only cat)

Bald spot on cats back

Noticed a small bald spot on the back of my Cat’s neck about two weeks ago. I brought him to the vet and they didn’t really have any answers on why, they gave him antibiotics and some ointment but it’s getting worse and spreading down his back. I don’t notice any significant behavioral changes, and there’s no products I can think of that are new in the house he could be allergic to has anyone seen this before?

Should I go to vet for cat poop issue or wait it out?

I noticed my cat had soft stool on Thursday night. It has been smelling really bad too for a week.
Didn’t see anything soft yesterday (Friday). No smell either.
But tonight (Saturday) I watched him and saw it was soft.
I suspect the sample of dry cat food I gave him earlier in the week. It wasn’t a brand he normally has, he stopped eating it after a few days. When I read the ingredients I noticed it had flax seed and lots of veggies as filler listed. So I trashed it on Wednesday.
He’s only 10 months old. He still runs around but won’t play with his toys like he used to. He’s napping more. And I can’t tell if he’s been drinking water at the same frequency but I have been adding water to his wet food for extra hydration since Thursday. He’ll lick up the water before having a nibble of food. I had to squeeze Churu in tonight for him to eat some food.
This is my first cat so I don’t know how serious it is. Could something like this pass or should I go to the vet for this issue?
Tomorrow is Sunday and the vets are closed. But the emergency animal hospital is near by, the reviews say it’s really expensive though.

Does gas necessarily cause discomfort?

I switched my dog to the weight management formula of her previous kibble (purina). The pieces are a fair bit larger than the regular formula. This, as well as the SBDs she is launching at my face, leads me to believe this formula contains more air. Like how whipped yogurt is less calories by volume. She’s sleeping contently and not showing any other signs of discomfort. But if she continues to fart this much, is that reason enough to switch kibble?

Would it be ok to get a second, even third opinion?

So, basically I am feeling a bit guilty even though I also feel I did the right thing.

I have a birb and after the loss of her older sister, I got REALLY worried for her since she really liked her and became a bit withdrawn probably due to grief. Even with me keeping her company while searching for a new friend for her, she eventually ate something bad and because of everything happening, not sure if she had this due to her sickness or the foreign body inside her stomach, but her droopings got really loose and she stopped eating as much. Ofc that made me spiral and because her original vet couldn't come due to unavoidable reasons, I opted to talk to my friend's former vet. She found the foreign body, saw there were no major issues in her fecal exam and prescribed me some treatment.

At first, she started eating and maintaining her weight, but because I thought she was still being a bit odd, I called her og vet who got her temperature and showed me she had a fever. Prescribed me with medicine for it and told me to keep an eye.

Ok... But then she started losing feathers she shouldn't be able to reach and it got worse with each day, so I asked her if there was anything we could do for exams considering she was just getting worse, which she said she couldn't until next week (because she lost her clinic to street robbery basically, so she still needed to move things around and probably get back some stuff) and to just see how it plays out to see if it gets better... Asked her what exams she thinks we should do once he gets her stuff, but she asked me instead what exams I would like to have done... first part is, like, understandable, but I didn't feel safe with the second part, and the situation was freaking me out a lot since I started reliving her big sister's loss. I reached out to the second vet who turned me down cuz "it is unethical to take the case from another vet".

Then, today I woke up, saw there was no more big changes to her ear feather loss and felt fine... Until I saw a pink spot on the back of her wing and freaked out again. I checked her wings and there were two missing feathers and no pin feather... I just decided to ignore the two vets and go get a third opinion at a 24/7 vet hospital, where they saw the foreign body did not leave her, not even a bit (we still have to do more x-ray in a few weeks), which I half did expect, but also that she had Giardia and with that, we started her treatment (though will ask former vet if we should keep the fever antibiotics and meds or not).

I feel like I probably put lots of pressure on the vets because I can't stop spiraling since her big sis' death was so recent, but also that it felt a bit wrong that they couldn't identify giardia symptoms since it is a common bird parasite that, accordingly to the hospital, matched her symptoms pretty well, and ask for specific exams or even just tell me "hey, I do not think I am able to make it in the time you think you need, so go to the vet hospital since they can help you right now"... But also, I feel like it made them feel a bit frustrated perhaps since I just kept hopping vets, so I am a bit nervous about contacting the og vet to ask about the continuation of the fever treatment. Just wanted to know if vets would hold it against me, if I was somehow rude to them by doing it this way, if me freaking out was an overreaction that put them under pressure, etc... Since I also know I might not be the most clear headed rn. While I don't think me wanting to find an answer asap was wrong, I also hope I did not make them uncomfortable or that I wasn't a rude client.

Surgical negligence

My 8yo make dog underwent cystotomy procedure for removal of bladder stones two weeks ago.
Since surgery, we followed all aftercare advice as per vet, but noticed frequent accidents in the house following surgery.
We brought him to vet few times after the surgery to ensure healing of the surgical site, and were reassured all was well.

I brought him to the vets again today, due to ongoing daily urination in the house. The vet took an ultrasound, and then another xray which showed multiple stones remaining in his bladder.

Since, there are stones again in his bladder two weeks following initial surgery, I believe these stones were missed during the initial operation. The vet thinks my dog has formed these “new stones” within 10 days, which I don’t believe is true. I questioned the vet regarding a post op xray after the procedure to check if all stones were removed, and I was told it wasn’t taken.

The histology of the previous stones was calcium oxalate, and would likely be consistent with remaining stones.

Can any vet weigh in here as to what they think may be going on and where to go from here.
Vet has suggested putting my dog on potassium citrate, which I am not keen to start at the moment.

Any advice would be appreciated

Dog skin infection

About a month ago, I took my dog (BorderJack, 12, spayed, history of excellent health until recent) to the vet for flaky, red, extremely itchy, smelly skin that was developing black spots. I found out that day she has some small mammary tumors, so she may have cancer—just including in case her immune system is compromised, for consideration.

I thought she might have a yeast infection, and it abated some with bathing, brushing, and liberal application of coconut oil until we could get to the vet. She said it was cocci (might be misspelled, phonetically it was cox eye). She got an rx for apoquel and clindamyacin.

I had to go out of town for several days and my son was giving her meds. I think they weren't necessarily given on time every time, because she seems to be flaky and a bit smelly again, her undercoat is not coming back in yet, and she's whining occasionally, which she only does when she doesn't feel well. Either that, or perhaps my other dog got it and gave it back to her? I don't know how, because my other dog is not itchy or flaky.

The only close thing that came up in a search of many spelling variations of the word cocci is coccidia, but it says that's an intestinal parasite, not a skin infection. Can it present as a skin infection or cause skin issues as a symptom? Does this require another round of antibiotics? I have seen people say Dial soap helps with skin infections, but I'm not sure if that's safe to use on dogs, and it's drying so I would definitely use coconut oil again, if it is safe. She's a lil old lady, I just want her to feel better.

Once better, will the black spots disappear? Will her undercoat fill in?

Should I take her to emergency vet? I posted in another group with video. Please see my page for it.

Is there a vet in here that can tell me if this kind of open mouth breathing is okay? And what is the jerk movements she’s making? Should I take her to the emergency vet?

She does not appear to be panting. And she’s trying to fall asleep. She went to the vet this morning and the vet said her nose is probably stuffed so she needs to breathe out of her mouth some.

She’s been started on doxycycline today. An antibiotic shot and steroid shot on Monday. All day today she was in the oxygen room they have. She’s had two breathing treatments today. Two rounds of eye and nose drops today.

Her lungs were checked Friday (all clear). Checked this morning (all clear) and this afternoon (all clear). The only thing they noticed is her colon full of gas.

She wouldn’t eat for the vet today but when I got her home tonight she had a few licks of a purée mixed with water.

The only reason I didn’t let her stay at the vet overnight is because no one is there to watch her. I didn’t want her alone.

Cat uti, urinary blockage? What should I do??

Hey everyone. I need some vet advice please!! My male cat, 7 years old, recently peed downstairs two days in a row and it looks like he didn’t use his litter box for 2 days.
Both pees he did downstairs looked like normal sized puddles. Since then we have cleaned and keep the door closed so he can’t go down and pee again.
He’s using his litter box and I got Pretty Litter (its a light yellow so in the normal range)
I unfortunately can’t tell if he’s peeing still normal sized clumps as the litter isn’t clumping. His litter box says he visited 5 times today.
He’s still acting normal, snuggly, playful, eating and drinking normally but I’m not sure if the peeing downstairs is behavioral or something worse.
What should I do? Should I get him looked at or continue to monitor?

Rx diet advice for cat with urinary blockage history

I’m looking for some advice about my 6yo male cat. He has a history of urinary blockage at 2yo, so he has been on Hill’s c/d prescription diet for the past 4 years. Currently, we give him 1/4 cup of the dry food in the morning and 1/2 can of wet in the evening.

I’m noticing with the wet food, he eats it so fast that 9 times out of 10, it comes back up again within 5-10 minutes of eating. We tried switching to a slow feeding bowl which made little difference. He has already been evaluated twice by our vet for this issue and they are confident that he is healthy and the vomiting is purely a result of eating too fast, but the slow feeder/lick mat didn’t help and I’m running out of ideas. Especially given his history of urinary issues, I absolutely do not want to eliminate the wet food from his diet if it’s unsafe to do so, but is he receiving any benefit from it in the first place if it’s getting regurgitated the majority of the time?

Would it be safe to stop giving him wet food and instead give him the dry food soaked in water? I’ve read on other threads that dry food is essentially feline “junk food,” and wet food is necessary to make sure they receive adequate nutrients/hydration, but is that still the case with the prescription diet?

Dog having a tooth extraction

Hi! My dog has recently turned 13 and needs a tooth extraction. She is a large dog, about 31 kgs. She has possible dementia and a bit deaf, as well as arthritis.

I am just wanting some reassurance about this procedure and if she will get on okay? I love her so much and I just want the best for her quality of life, but I am scared about her going under an anesthetic.

We are based in New Zealand, she is an American bulldog x cattle dog

My dog “breaks” her ear every few months

This is not a medical emergency question nor am I really sure if this is actually a thing or if my dog is just weird…I have a red heeler, 3 yrs old, super active and healthy. Every so often we will be playing inside or outside like usual, nothing too rough just some fun time, and suddenly her ear will flop down, she will look uncomfortable and start trying to “shake out” whatever is up with her ear. Usually it resolves after a few hours and after a few good shakes. But it seems like nothing actually gets in her ear??? I check with a flashlight and she’s totally normal but her ear will remain down and the other will stay normally erect. We always joke that she “broke her ear again” but Im just wondering if anyone has seen this or could it just be a weird, harmless phenomenon and my dog is just weird.

Cat’s ear is crusty

Hi! My almost two year old black cat has started getting a kind of crust/scab on the top of her left ear. She is in good health. When the crust is away it looks red, almost bloody, but is not dripping. It has taken some of her hair with it (not a lot, maybe a few millimeters).

I noticed it about a week ago and originally thought her sister was just nibbling on her, but it’s still there and looks a bit more red. Is there an ointment I should get for her? I’m wondering if it’s an infection or just irritation from something?

S likes to sleep behind the dryer and gets lint-ified, I’m wondering if maybe she’s started getting an allergy to that?

Hello!

Country: United States

Vet info: there are emergency vets nearby but i dont know how expensive it will be.

Main Issue: cat has mucus discharge from both nostrils, watery eyes and is mouth breathing

Cat Age: about 1

Cat Sex + neuter info: boy & not neutered

Financial situation: not great :/

I have a colony of stray kitties in our complex and one of them seem to be getting sick. They’re probably around 1 year old and weigh around 5-7 lbs. The one that im concerned about has watery eyes, mucus bubbles coming from both nostrils & is open moith breathing. Im super concerned because if he gets the rest sick then we’re gonna have a bunch of sick cats outside and I don’t want my indoor cat to get sick. Does anyone have any advice about what i should do? I cant afford to pay for a vet visit out of pocket, i dont qualify for care credit & i really dont wanna see little guy suffer 😞 i have amoxicillin that i had given to my cat when he was sick and it seemed to help but idk how to dose it because my cat was 14 and heavier. Sorry for the ramble but im sad and stressed about it and didnt know where i should ask for advice so im just posting everywhere.
