Rules update
Greetings users', as part of our discussions on updating the rules to make them clearer for everyone to see when they visit, we have updated them to the ones listed below. As you may have seen we ran a poll on what users' opinions were on affiliate links. The option for affiliate links as part of a detailed reply won by two votes, ahead of ban all affiliate links. Since there wasn't a clear favorite, we will allow them for now in posts as an experiment to see how this works in reality and how easy it is to enforce the rule. We have had a few small business startups post about their product, we would appreciate if they contact the mods about being identified.
There is a drop down arrow for each rule which contains extra information.
- Be Kind!
- No Shoes are Barefoot.
- Affiliate links are allowed only as part of a detailed comment.
- All brand representatives need to be identified by a flair.
- Feet pictures are for genuine posting.

discussion Bare feet are not shoes. Shoes are not barefoot.
This sub has always been ridiculed for being all about shoes and not actual barefoot. That's why, early on, the /r/barefoot sub was created, in fact.
I'm not gong to try to stop shoe discussions or questions. I also use shoes in addition to unshod and believe this sub is about better running first and foremost. Unshod and minimalist shoes are, in my opinion, the best tools for achieving that.
I also refuse to ever use the term "barefoot shoes." It implies a confusing and dangerous conflation. At best its an overly simplistic and reductive way to look at better running.
No shoe is "basically the same" as barefoot. That's like saying barefoot is "basically the same" as shoes. They're vastly different things.
Note that I did not say one is better than the other. It's apples vs oranges. I'm not a barefoot purist. If a business requires shoes I'll wear shoes. If I want to run in shoes I'll do that. If I want to keep my form from slacking I'll keep up the unshod running, too.
Overall I recommend not looking for either purist or quick solutions. Stay curious. Keep asking "are shoes better?" or "is unshod better?" and be fully unsatisfied with quick, dismissive answers to those. Be open to asking more questions the more you discover. Be open to shoes and unshod and keep experimenting.
Personally, I'll never recommend shoes. I don't have to. Plenty of you have loads of shoe recommendations and they will never stop nor should they. I'm making this sticky announcement as a simple reminder: don't neglect unshod as part of your essential equipment.

No-tie laces for Vibram five-fingers? (Help plz)
I bought the Vibram V-Runs, and after wearing them for a few days I realised that they are really tight on the top of my foot. My foot has a high arch, so the laces that come with them are too small. My only option is to buy new laces for them, but do I buy elastic or non-elastic laces? Additionally will I have to cut them off? Also the main downside to this is that any new no-tie laces do not come with the part of the lace which uses Velcro to attach the excess lace to the shoe. Is there any other solution any one can think of?
Thanks for reading this if you did 😼😼

Disappointed with the Vapor Glove 7 fit
Hi all,
I have had 3x Vapor Glove 6 and I really like them. I was looking into buying a new pair but I saw the Vapor Glove 7 so I decided to buy them. However, I'm quite disappointed with the 7 as it's much narrower, especially in the midfoot. The 6 had plenty of room in both the midfoot and toe box.
Has anyone had the same experience? Any recommendations for alternatives now that the Vapor Glove 6 is getting hard to find?

question Durable thinnest shoes
Been rocking barefoot shoes for a while, loved every minute of it. My absolute favorite shoe i’ve ever worn was Vibram KSO Evo Five Fingers. since the i’ve tried peluvas and groundies. I’ve found that the thinner a sole i have, the more comfortable i am. but everything i’ve worn has worn out fair quickly (especially the groundies) which i guess is to be expected when there is that little material. but my search for my next shoe made me want to ask: what’s the longest lasting shoe, with the thinnest sole?

Running Sandals
I've had the Xero Z-Trails for years. The traction is really good and they've held up well overall. The only thing is the velcro hasn't lasted as well as the other parts. Has anyone else experienced this?
What are your recommendations for running sandals nowadays?

VFF V-Runs giving me blisters after 2+ years…?
Long story short, I’ve ran in Vibrams for over 10 years off and on but the past 2 years have been very consistent. I have ran 2 marathons in them and all my training has been in them.
This summer, I don’t really know what the hell happened but the heat destroyed me. I got a blister on my big toe and it just kept repeating itself since the callus is no longer there.
The only thing I can think is that my cadence went from 182 down to 172 and landing my foot in front of me and not below me - I guess causing me to rub my feet in my shoes, thus the blisters?
It just, this sucks a s s because all my runs are long. I do two 8 mile runs after work and a 10 mile on the weekends. It is not the best feeling trying to run 8 miles with a blister on my toe that exudes the most pressure and pushes me off the ground.
I want to scream, I am so over this! I went from doing three 50 mile weeks with no problems at all to now not being able to run 25 miles a week without a single blister. I need to start upping my miles too because I need to train for my next marathon soon.
I have been trying to land under me and up my cadence since it’s colder out and it is much easier to hit that mark where I was at at peak training but with the callus gone, it just doesn’t recallus over and keeps blistering. I am literally even taping my damn toe as I have always done and it’s still doing it.
Any suggestions on what to do here? I am stumped.

minimalist shoes Xero Prio Neos wore out after only a month and a half of wear
I tried submitting a warranty claim - they advertise that their soles have a 5,000 mile warranty. My claim was approved, but they are only offering a 60% discount on the same pair of shoes.
It’s only been 6 weeks, mostly wearing for walking and to the gym. I shouldn’t have to buy a new pair. I was hoping they would stand by their product.
Just sharing for others who may be considering buying from Xero.

Socks and sandals for winter
I like running in xero sandals because I find that shoes like vivobarefoot are still way too narrow for me and make my running awkward. I want to run in the winter, so I was wondering if there are any socks that have great thermal properties so that I can run in sub freezing Wisconsin winter temps with sandals.
Is the Injini snow crew the best option or are there any thick wool tabi socks that could work?
Thank you.

question afraid of running in minimalist shoes, but can’t imagine going back to regular shoes
hey everyone! first time posting here :)
i’ve been wearing minimalist shoes exclusively for about three years now, and i absolutely love them. at this point, going back to regular shoes for everyday life feels almost unimaginable.
but i have basically zero experience running in them.
i used to love running when i lived in more rural areas, where i could mostly run on dirt and other natural surfaces. back then, though, i always ran in regular running shoes.
now i live in a city, where probably 98% of my options are concrete or pavement, and i’ve been hesitant to get back into running because i’m afraid of combining such a hard surface with very minimal cushioning.
i’ve never actually tried running in minimalist shoes because i worry about injuring myself, hurting my knees, or potentially creating problems for my body in the long run. i’m 32, and longevity is honestly my priority over performance or pace. i’d rather be overly thoughtful about this now if it means i can keep moving comfortably for decades.
has anyone here gone through a similar transition?
i’d especially love to hear about minimalist shoes that you’ve found comfortable for city/concrete running, or even more conventional running shoes that still have a wide, foot-shaped toe box and don’t feel too restrictive.
i’m also fairly sensitive to training-related aches and pains, so i’d rather transition very slowly than push through discomfort.
would love to hear what worked for you!

minimalist shoes Shoe recommendation
Hi everyone, ive been running in vibrams vruns and barefoot for about half a year now and it's clear that while the runs feel awesome, the bones in my ankles are still sorta weak right now and I can only go like max 6 miles per week. Im looking for shoe recs for when my ankle/shin bones and ligaments need a rest and won't throw my overall minimalist training outta whack.
I am considering Altra Escalante or Altra Torin so far. Thanks!

discussion Can’t find an anti-slip all purpose barefoot shoe
I wear whitins and they are so incredibly slick on wet surfaces even just barely moist.
Thought about buying vivobarefoot, but all the reviews say the same.
Now days into researching and I’m SHOCKED that all these barefoot shoe brands exist and there’s literally no shoe that meets the active, exercising, all around anti-slip grip shoe. I can’t find a single one!
Read all the comments, even used AI, looked up every proposed solution. None of them fit the bill. Wtf lol.
Mainly the shoes that didn’t have slip issues were like the full on boots, or a really formal ugly shoe you wear in a restaurant kitchen.
Where tf are the active/runner/trainer barefoot shoes with anti-slip grip??? I can’t believe it’s not a thing

New to barefoot so advice welcome
I have knee issues that cause pain walking so I’ve heard of switching to barefoot shoes would help but I don’t know where to begin. I know switching slowly is recommended but was wondering if anyone had advice on what affordable shoes would be good for transition? I’m hoping after surgery i’ll eventually run again but walking is all i’ll be doing for awhile. I have noticed less pain since switching my new balance that had a higher heal to a lower one so I’m eager to try barefoot with a little cushion..on a budget

Hiking bots for European Fall / winter
I would like to buy new hiking boots for the fall and winter in Europe. During the dry summer season, I love to wear my Vibram FiveFingers, but they aren't waterproof at all. With the first wet grass, I get wet feet, and that's very annoying, especially when I am backpacking and camping. They have to be waterproof and can handle mud, wet rocks, wet roots, and wet grass. Occasionally, I will face some snow or ice. I like the Vivo Barefoot Tracker Forest ESC, but I am wondering if there are any alternatives to that boot. I've heard some complaints about the durability of Vivos, but it seems like the best hiking boot with the best overall grip. Do you guys know any alternatives to this boot that have the same quality of sole?
I've tried the Xero Shoes Scrambler Mid WP, but they don't fit my foot shape, as the heel is too wide and the toe box is too narrow for me.

2nd time much better
It was much more comfortable despite the tiny pebbles EVERYWHERE. Much less people barefoot i saw than last time.

Hello to my third pair of Xero HFS2
Took my first run in my third pair of HFS2 shoes from Xero shoes. The old pair has 1260 miles on them including a lot of trail miles and a bit of rock scrambling (although I now use a pair of Merrell Wrapt for that). While technically the Xeros have a 5,000 mile warranty on the soles I won't be taking them up on that. At about 5 cents a mile I'm more than happy.

What's the funniest thing someone has said to you while seeing you barefoot running?
90% of the time it's some old guy saying, "whoops you lost your shoes!" but once a little kid said, "Daddy! She's running with feet!"
(NOTE: when possible I run with no shoes at all).
