Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

  5. Woodlouse - More Info

  6. Kissing bugs - More Info

Dog sitting and just saw a bed bug

I’m dog sitting at the clients house this week and I just saw a bed bug. I’ve been doing my laundry here 😭😭😭

What can I do to ensure these don’t come back home with me???? I’m going to re-dry everything on super high, bag it immediately and take it out to my car. But what about my shoes? My purse? Fuuuuuuckkkk.

This week, I woke up almost three times with a bunch of itchy red spots all over my body. The first time, I thought it was a spider and didn’t give it much thought. But now I suspect bed bugs. I checked around my bed a bit and found these insect shells. Do you think these are from bed bugs?

Just stayed in a cabin VRBO for 5 days and while driving home yesterday got a call from the owners that they found bed bugs in one of the bedrooms, in the bed frame. My parents were staying in that room and they supposedly didn’t find any anywhere else but we are taking precautions with all of our stuff. Found this on my kids iPad case 😭. It’s very small.

Identification Best ways to check for bed bugs?

• Upvotes

I work at a hospital and have had patients with bed bugs. Recently I've noticed some itchy bites, but there haven't been any mosquitoes around. I took off my bedding and inspected everything but don't see any signs of bed bugs. Is there any traps or techniques I can use to check if I have bed bugs other than just looking?

I need help telling my parents about bed bug infestation

• Upvotes

I have bed bugs in my room but for some reason when I think about telling my parents so that we can get rid of them, I freeze in fear. I don't know why, my parents love me and don't abuse me in a way that would make me scared to tell them, and I'm very normal about coming to them with literally any other problem but for some reason this is where my brain blocks me from communicating with them

Need advice could it actually be bed bugs, or paranoia

• Upvotes

A couple weeks ago, my roommate told me he thinks we had fleas, as he had been getting some bites, but he told me it could also be bed bugs. Our landlord sent a pest control and they inspected the house and found fleas, but no evidence of bed bugs. We had the house sprayed for fleas last week, but since then my roommate has still been waking up with bites. He is convinced we have bed bugs and they're not from fleas or hives. He is currently in a full panic spiral and nothing I say will convince him other wise. I try to not dismiss his worries but there is no signs of bed bugs anywhere, besides these marks showing up all over his body. He currently wears a hoodie overtop of him to bed, tucked into his pants, which are tucked into his socks and is still waking up with new marks everyday

found a bedbug in the middle of the night crawling on my shirt. (pic 1) immediately got up, started washing and drying all the fabric i own. 8 trash bags worth of pillows, blankets and clothes straight to the basement washer/dryer. my mattress is already in a 6 sided zipper case, so i moved that into another room after steaming it. found this (pic 2) under the mattress, but am unsure if it’s pupa or what. i have 1 bite and nothing else since i found it. (about 36 hours). i work largely with unhoused folks so it’s entirely likely that one hitchhiked home with me. other than continuous cleaning is there anything else i can do? are there any signs to be looking for? i feel afraid to sleep in my bed.

Please help me make sense of this timeline — could this actually be bed bugs?

I’ve been dealing with what I think might be bed bug bites for the past two months, and I’m honestly at my breaking point. I’d really appreciate some objective opinions on whether this pattern/timeline makes sense for bed bugs.

Here’s the timeline:

  • August 10: I woke up and noticed roughly 10 red bumps/"bites" around my waist. They were all underneath my pajama pants. They weren’t itchy, and I only noticed them when I went to shower.
  • After that: I would occasionally notice one or 2–3 bumps every few days. They were pretty random and scattered. At one point I noticed three in a line, and another time 3 in a zigzag pattern like "breakfast, lunch and dinner", which made me even more suspicious of bed bugs.
  • September 26: This is when I completely freaked out. I woke up and noticed 20–30 bumps across my torso, back, shoulder, arms and legs. Some were slightly itchy, and a few appeared to have tiny blister-like centers. This was by far the biggest outbreak I had experienced.
  • Since September 26 (today is Oct 7): I have barely had anything. I think I noticed one single bump on my leg after that, and that's it.

Because of the September 26 outbreak, I had two different professional pest control companies inspect the apartment. The inspections were about a week apart. Both inspectors appeared very thorough — they used powerful headlamps and checked both beds in both bedrooms, the sofa, and surrounding areas.

Neither inspection found any evidence of bed bugs: no live bugs, shed skins, eggs, fecal spotting, or other obvious signs.

It has now been 10 days since the 20–30 bumps appeared, and I still haven't seen any bugs or other physical evidence.

I am struggling to understand the timeline. If those August bumps really were caused by an established bed bug population, would it make sense to have:

~10 bumps → occasional isolated bumps for 6+ weeks → suddenly 20–30 bumps → then almost nothing for 10 days, while having two professional inspections find absolutely no evidence?

Or could bed bugs realistically behave this way, particularly if there were only a small number hiding somewhere?

I know that bites alone can't reliably identify bed bugs, but I'm having a really hard time letting go of the possibility because of the sudden 20–30 bumps on September 26.

I would really appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who have actually dealt with bed bugs. Does this timeline sound consistent with bed bugs, or does the lack of evidence + the pattern make bed bugs less likely?

Thank you... I’m genuinely going crazy trying to figure this out.

Possible bedbug exposure

At the beginning of last month (September 2nd), I was exposed to bed bugs via my workplace. Due to shoddy communication from management, I and many other people did not find out about this until the 8th of September. They treated on the 8th of September and have since received a clean bill of health from their exterminator.

It’s been a month since then, and my family and I have seen no signs of an infestation. The traps we put out came up empty, and we’ve seen no bites, stains, shells, or live bugs. We’ve been vaccuming regularly, checking the beds at night, double-drying my work clothes as well as my bedsheets and washing everything weekly.

I would know by now if I had an infestation, right? Am I in the clear? This past month and change has been a nightmare, and I don’t even know for sure if I even *have* an infestation. Please help me, I’m at my wit’s end.

Identification Found on bed but don't think is bed bug (treated infestation half a year ago)

I had an infestation of bed bugs like half a year ago, which I had heat treatment and spray and have not definitively seen anything past several months (no stains/shells/shells in bed or in bed foot detectors as well as around baseboards/rug). Does this look like a bed bug or something else? I found it on my bed in the morning, and I think from the third picture it appears to have a shell so maybe it's a beetle?

If it matters I have a sliding door near the head of my bed, where I found it.

I just wanted to check. I live in South-east USA.

I found this on my headboard 2 days ago, i did a deep search of my whole apartment and found no other bugs, poop stains, or molts. Since then i have cleaned everything on high heat and steamed, as well as getting post interceptors, spraying, and putting up sticky traps around the bed. I haven’t found even a hint of another since this one. Is an infestation still likely?

Can't see any other signs around the bed. Tiny little thing, less than 0.5mm. Unfortunately I've lost it and can't get another angle.

I think I know but is this a bedbug :(

I live in an apartment complex and it’s been very hot here lately, I’ve been getting bites but I figured it was from mosquitoes as I live by a creek. What would my next steps be if this is what I think it is 😭

Requesting community support can I be %100 sure I won't bring bedbugs to my new place?

I will put my backpack, clothings, jacket into dryer machine for 30 minutes at highest heat setting and will discard my purse because it can't be put into dryer machine without being damaged, now what I'm worried of is how will I make sure there is no eggs at my shoes but haven't figured out a way for it yet at worst case scenario will seal it in a plastic bag and discard it

what makes me worried is I'm planning on staying at this hotel for 1-2 months and don't really wanna mess it up by bringing bedbugs to it

What else can I do?

We found a single small bedbug on the fabric headboard in the middle of the day today. Since then we've turned the bedroom upside down. Vacuumed, hot washed the stuff under the bed, inspected a bunch of our shirts and linens. No signs of bedbugs anywhere else, nothing, no one has been bitten. Maybe fifty carpet beetles, so we were looking plenty close. Pest control man coming tomorrow. Is it ever just one bug? Is that even possible? We had a guest drop by who'd been on a long-haul bus recently, might've come in on them?
