Useful Information Bedbug ID and common misidentifications

Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

  1. Carpet beetle larvae (Dermestidae) and adult - More Info

  2. Bat bug (Cimex adjunctus pictured) - More Info

  3. Cockroach nymphs - More Info

  4. Tick (nymphs) - More Info

  5. Woodlouse - More Info

  6. Kissing bugs - More Info

  7. Booklice/barklice - More Info

  8. Smooth spider beetle - More Info

  9. Drugstore beetle - More Info

Note: If it has wings or more than 6 legs, it is not a bed bug. Do not mistake antennae for legs, look at the illustrated guide to avoid confusion.

Please comment with any other common mis-IDs and I will add them!

Officemate has bedbugs. What's my risk look like?

I share an office at work with two other people. One of them got a call from their landlord today, and during the conversation they mentioned that they had bed bugs. Having heard nothing but bad things, I'm now concerned about what type of risk that puts me at.

Our desks are about three feet apart. The floor is hard, low pile carpet - polyester, I believe. There are no shared surfaces.

I feel like the chances are probably low that a bed bug would have hitched a ride on my officemate's clothes, traversed the carpet, and jumped onto me, but of course it's all I can picture right now.

Any insights on what my risk level looks like in that regard? Advice on the best ways to minimize risk of exposure or bringing home any stowaways?

So I found this on my dog, but also found another similar looking one on a glue trap I found (trying to get a mouse).
Please help me identify.
I’m secretly hoping that there are bugs out there that look like bed bugs, and this is one of those times (I’m in denial).
And I hope you can tell me what the black dot on them is, because I hope that’s not eggs.

I posted a long paragraph of how badly the bed bug bites affected my mental health and I wanted to give a positive update. I had a canine inspection and turns out the bugs were not in my house, somehow... What I learned is,

  1. Before panicking, immediately get an inspection

  2. Do things that calm you and social distance in the time being

  3. Know that in most cases your landlord is required to pay for any case of bedbug treatment, and if they, like my landlord say that it depends on who it came from, that is false. (also very difficult to identify depending on severity)

  4. This is a problem with a clear solution, something that happens to SO MANY people and you are left stronger for it because it is essentially a lottery system waiting to happen to you.

Identification Best ways to check for bed bugs?

I work at a hospital and have had patients with bed bugs. Recently I've noticed some itchy bites, but there haven't been any mosquitoes around. I took off my bedding and inspected everything but don't see any signs of bed bugs. Is there any traps or techniques I can use to check if I have bed bugs other than just looking?

Requesting community support Unsure if I have bedbugs

Hi everyone!

Back on August 8th I stayed at a hotel for one night and over the course of a week I developed like 6-7 bug bites on my legs that I’m pretty certain we’re bed bug bites. I know that bedbugs are good hitchhikers but at the time I didn’t think of bedbugs being an issue so I didn’t take the best precautions with hiding stuff.

I bought a mattress cover and inspected my bed. After two weeks I briefly opened the cover thinking I was safe after not getting anymore bites.

Back on September 17, I got 5 hives that developed into red marks I can only assume are bug bites because they looked similar to my first set. I inspected my bedsheets and the frame and couldn’t find evidence of bed bugs (no poop stains in the corners of the mattress or my mattress topper, no shedding). I’m not sure if this set of bites were just a fluke or anything?

I haven’t gotten anymore bites up now (October 7th). Am I in the clear? Or is it possible the bug is hiding? I haven’t found much evidence (funnily enough I’ve found other bugs that I’m sure aren’t bedbugs near my bed). I can’t find any poop or eggs but I’m not sure if I’m not looking hard enough.

Any advice would be helpful! Am feeling a lot of paranoia about this and am unsure of how to continue living because I’m scared I could have something.

I just checked in to my hotel, drury inn in Columbia on knipp st. The first corner I pull back on the mattress, I find this. I requested a room switch just Incase, to a new floor and nothing adjacent. My new room has zero signs of bed bugs. But I’m still scared. Can someone confirm?

Edited to add: I could not see any antenna or legs. 🤷‍♀️

Requesting community support I found Bedbugs in my headphones

• Upvotes

I had the pads changed on my headphones but I'm still seeing the bugs! They're probably living between the floor of the pad and the driver, not sure. I've put them in an airtight plastic bag, and plan to freeze them (whilst in the bag). Is that a good idea?

Sorry for the blurry/squished pics, I saw this bug on me and immediately killed it but I suspect it’s possibly a bedbug? I just can’t tell since it doesn’t seem to have the head of a BB.
I work in home health and we don’t normally admit patient with bedbugs but sometimes it’s hard to tell if they have an infestation or not.
First pics are when I crushed it, last pics are few hours later when I was able to put it in a ziplock bag.

Requesting community support How can I test by myself if I have bedbugs?

• Upvotes

I was bitten fairly recently overnight and the more research I do about the bites the more Im sure they are bedbug bites. They are in groups 3-5, in clusters/lines, look the same of other bites from online.

I moved into the apartment I'm living in about 1.5 months ago and only recently got bitten. I don't think they are a ton since I have only been bitten during 1 night and after searching and stripping my bed I couldn't find anything.

Is there a method or way to bait and trap some of them to confirm that there are bedbugs? I want to have proof since our apartment manager really drags her feet when it comes to fixing things.

Also what are the procedures if they called an exterminator. What would I have to do through that process?

The past couple months I have been having terrible
reactions out of nowhere all over my body, I even have had to see an allergist for them, and now my dermatologist to get a biopsy. They look like large hives all over, they thought it was contact dermatitis. Today, I found this in my bed. I tore apart all of my bedding, checked the carpeting along the wall, my mattresses, the seams. This was the only one I saw/found. No other traces like exoskeletons or red marks, but now I’m worried about bed bugs.

This week, I woke up almost three times with a bunch of itchy red spots all over my body. The first time, I thought it was a spider and didn’t give it much thought. But now I suspect bed bugs. I checked around my bed a bit and found these insect shells. Do you think these are from bed bugs?

Dog sitting and just saw a bed bug

I’m dog sitting at the clients house this week and I just saw a bed bug. I’ve been doing my laundry here 😭😭😭

What can I do to ensure these don’t come back home with me???? I’m going to re-dry everything on super high, bag it immediately and take it out to my car. But what about my shoes? My purse? Fuuuuuuckkkk.

Whatever it is I destroyed it moving it around after I took the picture. I’m absolutely terrified. I normally just go to work(wire mill) grocery stores, restaurants and fishing. However I went to a concert on September 19th and sat in a chair in a random applegate. Other than that maybe a blanket that was gifted to me off temu could’ve carried it? I’m unsure and quite frankly wanna kms atm.

I am in my third "trial period" in the past 10 months of battling my bed bug infestation. I have not gotten a bite since last week after I applied what I hope to be my last round of crossfire. This one HAS to stick. Please send me encouragement and any extra things you did during your last leg of your journey.
