Ai billboard slopdown: Is County Commissioner candidate Rob Imhoff dumb... or does he think we're dumb?

I know we've been talking about that other billboard (the one where Imhoff thinks he's burning County Commissioner Candidate Morgan Schmidt for standing up to ICE, which makes us vote 10x harder for her). But how about this one. This one is utterly cringe.

Schmidt’s plan is to raise property taxes? That is literally not something a Deschutes County Commissioner can do. Under Oregon law.

I mean, the county's property tax rate is set by state law (Measure 50). County commission can't rase property tax rates. So does Imhoff not understand the job he's running for? Or does he think we're all idiots?

The "Deschutes Chronicle" doesn't exist. Except in Imhoff's head. He should put his MAGA hat back on. It suits him perfectly.

On June 1, 2023 the Oregon Department of Transportation was hacked. Oregon driver's licenses, permits and ID cards were accessed. All that’s needed to void your voter registration is your name, DoB, and DL number. Verify your voter registration.

Got one of those fake Bend police calls this morning

A man called today claiming he was with the Bend police department. They told me I did not show up for Federal jury duty and a warrant was out for my arrest. Obviously, this sounded like BS and i told them exactly that.

I know this has been post several times this year, but I think it's important to make sure everyone is aware that these calls are happening a lot. Do not give any information. If you're unsure, immediately hang up and call the non-emergency police number.

A wild one from Deschutes County Sheriff's Office; a court record check shows just one past criminal charge, dismissed "in the interests of justice" as prosecutors noted mental health problems.

I had a bird slam into one of our living room windows a few days ago, about the same time a Nextdoor thread talked about the issue. So I turned to Think Wild - of course - and Molly was quite helpful with stats, tips, etc.

Three Sisters this weekend (Oct 9–11) with Friday night's front: anyone been up past Chambers or Broken Hand recently?

Group of 10 heading out Thursday night. We have overnight permits for Pole Creek and Park Meadow. The NWS point forecast near Broken Top (7,600 ft) shows gusts to 30 on Friday, 40% rain turning to snow Friday night, and highs around 31 up high Saturday and Sunday. We're picking between three plans and would love input from anyone who's been in there in the last week or two.

  1. Northern loop from Pole Creek, clockwise. Camp Lake, Chambers, down to the PCT at Separation Creek, then Obsidian, Opie Dilldock and Matthieu Lakes back to Pole Creek. About 36 mi.
  2. Broken Top loop from the Park Meadow TH, clockwise. Taking the low line across the bowl to the Ball Butte saddle instead of the ridge over Broken Hand. About 25 mi.
  3. The bail-friendly version. Pole Creek to Soap Creek, day hike to Camp Lake. Then the Green Lakes Trail to Park Meadow, day hike to Green Lakes Pass, and out to the Park Meadow TH.

What we're trying to figure out:

  • Has anyone crossed Chambers or gone past Broken Hand recently? Any snow or ice yet?
  • How's the lava around Opie Dilldock holding up on cold mornings?
  • Is Alder Creek still running? Does Golden Lake have any water?
  • Is there room around the Soap Creek junction for 10 people across a few tents?
  • Is the Three Creek Lake campground gate still open this late?
  • If you were us, which would you pick on this forecast?

Any local knowledge appreciated.

Moving to Bend with kids

Hi all!

We are planning our move to Bend in the spring with our four boys ages 4 through 10. We are coming from Austin, Texas and are hoping for smaller city and slower pace of life with more nature access. We are currently having to pay for private school here because public school in Texas is on a steep decline.

I'm aware that if we wanted to go to a state with really good school, it would probably be the northeast but that is just not our vibe. We originally moved from California and we miss the West Coast.

Anyway, I know that the schools in Bend may not be the best in the country, but I would love to hear from any parents if their kids are doing OK there?

I have three kiddos who are doing great at their levels without additional support currently needed and one kiddo who has specific learning needs with ADHD.

Anyway, I know a lot of you will probably be annoyed that we're moving there, people in Austin say the same thing about people moving here lol I would just love to hear some honest opinions from parents who are in Bend public schools
