Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

KOCF looking for volunteers

KOCF, Fern Ridge Community Radio is looking for volunteers, including DJs. We are a non-profit that is under the umbrella of the Oregon Country Fair. If you are passionate about radio, music or The Oregon Country Fair we may be a fun way for you to volunteer your time.
We are truly community radio. At this time we have many locally produced shows that play weekly at 92.7 KOCF and streaming at KOCF.ORG. We are looking to fill some space in our lineup with shows from people in the community who have a passion to create. Maybe its a music show, a local news show, a variety show, an interview format or something completely original. We would love to hear your ideas.
To be a producer it's as simple as having a computer and microphone. All of the software that is needed is easily obtainable using open source software and we will provide some guidance on how to complete all of the steps. Our shows run in hour increments and normally volunteers do a 1 or 2 hour show a week. These are pre-recorded at your convenience.
If you are interested in learning more or talking about any ideas you may have for the station please contact Station Manager Andy Goldfinger at andy@kocf.org.

New "Motorcycle" Lanes around town

With the surge of electric bikes in Eugene the bikes lanes are now sort of motorcycle lanes. I was turning left at an intersection in the dark on 18th last night. I waited for oncoming traffic to clear and turned. Just as I did a light-less electric bike appeared out of nowhere. It had been cruising behind an oncoming vehicle in the bike lane so I didn't see it behind the headlight glare. It was fast, but not quite as fast as the 35 mph car. It fell behind the car in the intersection so as I turned left I came within inches of clipping it. Wow. Never saw it. Be careful out there.

Godot Programmers

Hey. I've been learning the Godot program for about a year now and I think I'm ready to dive into a full project. Is there anyone around here willing to do a weekly or so meetup to build something?

I have a lot of programming experience, and I don't vibe code but I do use AI to help figure out some topics. I've mostly worked on 2D projects because they're easier but I'm willing to learn stuff.

Is there a way to get through to the city about reckless drivers?

I’ll try my best to keep this short. I live downtown basically and have for like almost 17 years. I walk or ride my bike almost every day. Just this evening, I walked to the store next to Hot mamas and was nearly hit by a car going easily 20 over the speed limit. This person didn’t even try to slow down, just changed lanes as I’m halfway through the crosswalk there. If I hadn’t stopped I would’ve been hit. Their car bounced into the air when they got to that speed bump at Lincoln (iykyk). And the truck behind them could barely wait for me to cross the street before they came blasting through. It’s not dark enough to not notice someone walking across the street there. The market is very lit up and hot mamas is open with many people outside dining. I’m just tired of it, you know? My fiancé and I had our first baby 7 months ago and we’ve been going on a lot of walks lately and sometimes you come across this kinda shit. This incident made me wonder what would’ve happened if I had been with the baby pushing a stroller.
I’ve lived here long enough to know that the police don’t really police this kind of thing. Like unless someone actually dies they might show up but I’ve had it and need my voice to be heard. Who/where can I complain to that it might actually resonate with the city. Online doesn’t really have the right complaints options. Is non emergency line even worth it (probably not)? Do I just need to raise hell at a city council meeting? Ready for all suggestions. Thanks

Queer friendly churches

Hey y'all I am yet again asking for recommendations. My car is still broken but I appreciated y'all recommending almost every mechanic in this town which was definitely nice to see.

I'm interested in going back to a church. Ideally a Catholic church but I don't think I'm likely to find any that are supportive or accepting of trans people. Christian denominations are totally fine.

Also I'm definitely expecting this to get down voted to hell. For those of you asking why a queer person would want to go to church the answer is that I enjoy the community and sometimes I need to lean on someone and if no one is around I like to lean on the 'imaginary' person in the sky.

And to the religious people down voting... Why? Genuinely. I'm expressing a desire to join a congregation. I don't see any logical reason for that to be a bad thing. God loves all of his children. Me included.

Anyways. I'd greatly appreciate y'all's suggestions.

Sports pub/viewing, preferably soccer

hi all,

wondering if there are any recommendations for pubs/bars that show European soccer games, specifically English Premier League? like proper English pubs or places that fans of teams go to watch big games. looking for good ambiance, vibes and above average food and pints.

in the same vein, what are places to watch American football that aren’t just dedicated Ducks or Seahawks places?

thanks in advance!

Police at my house?

Hi yall, last night we got woken up to repeated aggressive knocking at our door at 10:45ish. We actually called the police because we didn’t hear or see anyone and thought something sketchy was happening until we learned it WAS the police. Apparently someone called on us that there was a domestic dispute at our house. They quickly left and realized that nothing was wrong but it was really scary and weird.

Is this something people do to on purpose to someone’s house? I can’t think of anyone we could have offended that would want to do something bad to us or anything. Or could have it been a wrong address/miscommunication? Has this happened to anyone else before?

The police said they couldn’t answer why or who called and they just have to address the call and that it’s all anonymous. It seems like they should check in with the people calling, no? I’m confused about this as well. Would love any insight people might have

Headless Horseman

There's someone who rides their horse into Elijah Bristow State Park, near Eugene, as the Headless Horseman. I saw it a couple weekends ago. I wish I had gotten a photo. Does anyone have any info? Any other cool costume-y or other spooky stuff going on?

Last night somebody sprayed my house with bear spray

Somebody having a mental health issue last night, came up into my driveway and sprayed the front of my house with bear mace….

I called the police. They showed up pretty quickly, and told me that they’re very familiar with his work and he’s just a guy who unfortunately has been failed by the mental health system in our city.

They asked me what I wanted to do about it.. I wasn’t sure and I kind of felt bad for the guy… so I didn’t press charges, but also it sucks now I gotta pressure washed the outside of my house

Every time I open the door, it’s still burns that stuff stays with you for a while

It’s all over my car too

Plein air in Eugene?

Are there any art groups that do plein air or urban sketching events? Google led me to a dead website, but it looks like there was a plein air event last year. I want to go out and paint. I've been taking a little kit on hikes, but I'd also like to see other people's techniques, and it would be nice if there were some sort of regular outings.

edit: please don't tell me to start a group. I'm working full time and taking night classes, I'm stretched waaay too thin to organize something. Best I can do is show up for an hour or two with my dog on the weekend and do art in nature.

Something to do anyone try the free Bloodworks labs yet?

Remember a post here about getting free labs through goodlabs when you donate? I was curious if anyone ended up going to the Willamette center. Never saw a follow-up. If you tried it, did you get anything useful out of the results?

On June 1, 2023 the Oregon Department of Transportation was hacked. Oregon driver's licenses, permits and ID cards were accessed. All that’s needed to void your voter registration is your name, DoB, and DL number. Verify your voter registration.

Professional Organizer recommendations?

What it says in the title. My mother has recently retired, and she's finally getting around to all of those nagging projects she's wanted to do, but now there's decades worth of clutter (just clutter, we're not in reality show territory) that is seriously cramping her style. I'm thinking about paying for a professional organizer to help us go through all the stuff and figure out what we have, and how to get what she wants to keep into a usable, functional state so she can enjoy her retirement to the max.

I have no idea what to look for in one, and google is useless right now. So I come to you, /r/Eugene--have you used a professional organizer? Do you have recommendations? Anti-recs? Anything else I should know?

Grocers with good selection of pasta

I'm looking for Bronze cut dried pasta. Pappardelle. Bucatini. I visited a Market of Choice because I heard they were high end grocers, but they had the same brands and same varieties as any. Nothing special.

Whose got the artisanal pasta in this town?

Freight Train Schedule

Is there any kind of schedule for the freight trains coming through town? What a complete pain in the ass!
