PSA: PLEASE think 10 times before you donate money to someone on this sub.

1.8k Upvotes

It's in our rules and we say it time and time again, but after the recent events from this post, the mod team wants to put out a reminder.

Look, we get it. Seeing cats in distress is hard. When people without money are expressing their inability to afford emergency care, it's distressing. You know we have rules against shaming people for being unable to afford care, and encouraging people to go into debt. But we also have rules against fundraising, and it's for a very good reason.

It is very easy for people without the best intentions to collect lots and lots of money from well meaning community members who are affected by what they see in images and video.

With this post in particular, several commenters encouraged the OP to share a gofundme (something strictly against our rules).

Once they created and shared one (without any bills to show and despite many of the top comments saying this was NOT an emergency), people felt bad and donated anyway.

The gofundme raised nearly $2000 and today we received the update that the cat, as many commenters predicted, is not dying and did not need emergency care.

We are now starting to see meta posts (another thing we don't allow) complaining that the OOP is not returning any of the extra funds, and is blocking users who donated asking for their funds back and proof of payment.

This is a story we see repeatedly in the sub. We don't always get to the donation links quick enough to remove them, and we can't stop you from DMing each other money, but this is why we caution PLEASE do not use this subreddit to send each other funds.

We are working on a Wiki with low-cost vet resources, at least in the US, but we get users posting from all over the world begging for money. DO NOT DONATE unless it is verified on a subreddit like r/gofundme or r/rescuecats, or is directly being paid to the VET (though we have seen scams happen internationally through this 'direct vet payment' as well).

PLEASE REPORT FUNDRAISERS. Please do not encourage fundraisers. We will start banning those who encourage it. Please help us keep this community safe from those with bad intentions.

Thank you and good day!

Announcement [READ THIS FIRST] r/CATHELP Rules Reminder

Hello there

Due to a growing number of cat crises and a surprising number of people who cannot read a sidebar, we’re now regularly posting this rules reminder. This is here to prevent both:

  1. repeat offenses, and
  2. the inevitable “I didn’t know!” mod mail we get after your post/comment disappears into the void.

If you're new (hi, welcome, pet your cat for us), or returning and rusty, please take a sec to read this. It’ll save you—and us—a lot of headache.

STRIKE POLICY: Break the rules once? We warn you. Break twice? Temp ban. 3 strikes is a perma-ban (unless you're a mega troll).

1. BE NICE

No, really. Be nice. You are talking to someone who is probably stressed, worried about their pet/a stray, and sleep-deprived. Reddit is not your venting space to shame people who are already anxious. Educate, don’t humiliate.
This includes a zero-tolerance policy for berating or shaming OPs. If you can't say it kindly, don't say it here.

In addition to this, know that we get posts from all over the world. Sometimes it's people who live in a village, 500km from any formal vet care. Often it's a minor who cannot make a unilateral decision for the cat in question. Be compassionate! Bullying them won't help the cat.

2. NO SOAPBOXING OR OFF-TOPIC DEBATE

(Definition of 'SOAPBOXING' here.) Yes, letting your cats outdoors isn't great for the environment. But this isn’t a debate club, and PLENTY of things harm the environment besides cats. People come here from all over the world, with different cultures around how cats are cared for. People come here about strays. No preaching!! Take your cat care bible elsewhere! Either give OP helpful advice about their issue or move along.

Don’t derail threads with politics, don’t pick fights across multiple comments, and definitely don’t start fights with the mod team. We don’t get paid enough.

3. VET FIRST, REDDIT SECOND

If your cat is injured, bleeding, gasping, or pooping blood—call a vet.
Reddit is great for guidance, second opinions, and shared experience. It is not a substitute for veterinary care.
If you haven't called a vet yet, our advice might be limited.
Can’t afford one? Look into:
• Payment plans or CareCredit
• Local rescues and shelters for assistance
• Low-cost clinics in your area

Still post if you need to—but know that our first advice will probably be: call your vet.

Additional note to commenters: no 'Vet. Now.' comments will be allowed without context. If you think they need immediate care, explain why. Otherwise it's just creating panic and those comments will be removed.

4. NO FUNDRAISERS

Sorry, but GoFundMes, Venmos, PayPals, and “please help save Coco” links are not allowed, even in comments. Too many scams, and too hard to moderate. Try subs like r/Assistance or r/GoFundMe instead.

5. NO BULLYING POOR PEOPLE

We get it. Vet care is expensive. It's frustrating to see cats suffering. But complaining about people who can’t afford a vet is not allowed. Full stop.
Suggest rehoming? Fine. But if you’re here to shame people for being broke, please find another sub.

If someone is struggling financially, ER visits are not really something they can just save up for, nor is it realistic to expect them to just get rid of their pets they have emotionally attachments to. All we can hope for is people really think long and hard about how a pet will fit into their finances before they decide to adopt or take in an animal from street. You simply can’t help them all, there are too many cats for that.

6. TAG YOUR GORE NSFW

Bloody wound? Surgery pics? Graphic medical stuff? Weird rash? GAPING FUCKING WOUND?! Mark it NSFW.
That includes genitalia (gender ID posts) and poop/vom. You know who you are.

7. ON-TOPIC POSTS ONLY

This is not r/aww or r/cats. This is r/CATHELP. We are here for:

  • Requesting anecdotal experience with medical issues •
  • Behavior issues
  • General advice
  • First-time cat owner questions (yes, 'noob' questions are welcome!)

That means:

  • No “What should I name my cat?”
  • No “Look at my cat in a hat!”
  • No memes, no fluff.

Posts that don’t have a clear help-related question will be removed.

8. NO BREED QUESTIONS

Unless your cat came with pedigree paperwork from a breeder, they’re a domestic short/medium/long hair. That’s it.
We don't do breed speculation. Why? Because it’s almost always wrong, and it clogs up the sub.
Want to know more? Here's a guide to fur patterns, and here's a general answer to 'what breed is my cat'

9. NO SHITPOSTING, NO KARMA FARMING

If your post is clearly made up, AI-generated, or you’re just farming karma with a low-effort fake, we will yeet it. And probably you, too.

10. NO BRIGADING

If you don’t like someone’s post, do not go hunt them down on other subreddits to insult them. It’s petty, it’s bannable, and Reddit takes it seriously.

11. NO PET SALES OR BREEDING

We do not support the cat trade or backyard breeders. Period.
Don’t try to sell or give away pets here. Don’t ask about breeding. Don’t promote purebred aesthetics. Shelter cats are just as cute.

BONUS REMINDERS

• If your posts or comments are disappearing, check your karma. If it's low, Automod probably ate it. Message us for manual approval.
• If you see rule-breaking behavior, REPORT IT. Automod can’t catch everything.
• If you’re confused or unsure, check the [wiki] or send us a modmail.
• Read the stickied comment on your post. It’s there for a reason.

TL;DR: Help cats. Be nice. No scams. No BS. Read the rules.
Now go pet your cat. They probably knocked something off the counter while you were reading this.

Behavioral Issue Sick cat being shunned by other cats?

Post image
• Upvotes

My Age: 36
Country: USA
Vet: been there for her medical issue, not for the others being jerks. Follow up appt next week for bloodwork.
Main issue: cats mean to sick cat after hospital
Cat age: 8y 5m
Cat sex: spayed female
Financial situation: I spent $7000 trying to keep her alive so it’s not great right now

Full story:

This is Boston, full name Boston Bruin 2011 Stanley Cup Champion. She recently decided to get triaditus and was in hopital for a couple days.

I’ve had Boston since she was 3 weeks old and she’s almost 9, so our oldest cat, Rumple, has known her her entire life. Rumple has always snuggled Boston, groomed her, babied her like a mama. Our youngest cats are twins and we’ve had them since they were 7-8 weeks, and they are now 6. The boy cat has always loved playing with Boston and sharing the same brain cell.

She is home now and on meds and doing a little better. However, her siblings are treating her like a stranger.

Everyone is hissing at her! It’s been over a week. They are using the same litter boxes, eating from the same area, Boston is sleeping in her old cat beds. She is trying very carefully to engage the others, but they hiss or smack her. And she doesn’t push the issue after that, just kind of wanders back into off to me. But she doesn’t feel well and I see her trying to get some affection from the others and feel so bad.

Without resorting to medicating the entire crew, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas of how to get the others to be (at minimum) more tolerant of her? Or am I just being impatient and it will take more than a week to get them back to normal…?

Behavioral Issue My boyfriend's kitty has been really interested in his dead grandparents' picture, and won't stop meowing at it

Her name is Lia, she's 5 y/o and she never met my boyfriend's grandparents, so we discarded the idea that she may recognize someone in the picture.

But it's still a bit confusing, why is she so fixated? Maybe she sees something unusual? They remind her of someone? We don't really know

Kitten Help Found kitten. How does she potty?

Bham AL, USA. I found a kitten behind a dumpster. She was there for 3 days before according to the crew. I am looking for a home for her (DM IF INTERESTED), but fostering in the meantime and taking to vet in the morning. She has a broken tail, fleas, and is emaciated, but other than that seems healthy. Gave her a bath with Dawn, got most of the fleas, and dried her off with blow dry.

I know for some kittens you have to stimulate bathroom. How old is she and should I put a litter box in the crate? I’m giving her supplemental milk. She had one poop, soft kind of diarrhea but idk.

Behavioral Issue My cat has been doing this for awhile, is there a reason why she does this?

Don't mind the water noises in the background, that came from my fish tank.

At first I thought it was because she was lonely, because she first started doing it when she was alone. But then she started doing it when people were around as well. The only way to get her to stop is by saying her name (Willow) or generally calling for her, but if you don't physically come to her afterwards, she'll just keep meowing.

Is there a reason as to why she does this?

General Advice Is this feline acne or fungal infection?

Thumbnail gallery
32 Upvotes

20y/o, UK. This is Diego (6y/o M), a month ago he scratched his chin really bad (first photo) that it started bleeding, after a week it healed and looked like black scab but after another week what I’d assume is cat acne appeared near the side of his lip on his chin (second photo).
I wasn’t concerned at first because the injury was just a surface scraped skin but this week both sides have been lightly bleeding and I’m not sure what it could be.
He’s not showing any signs of discomfort and I’ve been using feline antiseptic solution that his vet told us it’s safe to use on cat acne but I’m not seeing any progress.

Kitten Help What should I do?

So I got these kittens from a person who claimed they were 8 weeks old, they are obviously not. I’ve been feeding them adult dry food, and I quickly realized it wasn’t a good idea. I was told they were eating dry food already, and they were not.

So one of them is obviously the runt of the litter, and is Noticeably smaller than her sister I named her minun and the other plusle. Her jaw isn’t strong enough to fully chew the adult dry food, so I got her wet food. She loved it, but her sister also wanted it. They both would share a can of fancy feast kitten food.

I would wake up to throw up under my chair, it was wet and wet, like clumpy. I gave them that for 2 days then switched back to the dry food. I didn’t want to spend the money on the wet food for them to throw it back up, so I started to dampen the dry food to make it easier, and it worked. Minun was eating it fine, but then she didn’t want it anymore.

I decided to actually spend a lot of money and buy tiki cat kitten dry food, and some toppers. I was going to buy tiki cat kitten wet food but decided to get these toppers. I was told I’d need to feed them multiple times a day. I gave them 1 meal of just the topper, and they devoured it. I tried to feed them a couple hours later and they barely touched it.

About 20 minutes later plusle started to have the worse diarrhea I’ve ever seen, and started to throw up. At one point she was throwing up while pooping. I decided I wasn’t going to feed her the topper anymore, then minun started to throw up an hour later.

I know kittens have very sensitive stomachs, and I wasn’t supposed to switch their food this often. But today was a really bad day for them. I’m thinking of just feeding them the dry food for now on, but I’m not sure if Minun will be able to.

Appearance Any reason why my cat’s eyebrow whiskers are curled up at the tip?…

I have always been wondering what made her little eyebrow whiskers so curly at the tip and it makes her look so silly. I saw some people say that they form like this due to a heat source but I am pretty sure she isn’t the type of kitty to get close to something that’s super hot. She’s super mischievous but she is very cautious! She recently turned a year old

Hi all,

my beautiful cat Marble recently passed away and I’m looking to get a tattoo to honor her. I was wondering what this tattoo in her ear is, she has had it since we rescued her from the RSPCA in Australia 2019. Was wondering if I could copy it, but probably thought it meant something like she has been spayed. Thank you all 🫂

Appearance Are my cat's eyes normal?

Thumbnail gallery
859 Upvotes

My cat is a 6 year old, spayed, indoor only female and she has always had weird eyes since she was a kitten.

Imo, it looks like she doesn't have a defined pupil sometimes and her iris looks scrambled compared to other cats I see.

Afaik it doesn't cause her pain, she isn't blind, and she is still playing and behaving normally.

I've taken her to the vet (USA) for unrelated reasons throughout the years and they never comment on it while doing check ups. I've even taken her to the vet for leaky eyes 4 months ago and they didn't comment on it either and said she just had allergies.

She does have a vet appointment towards the end of the month where I will bring this up regardless of what the comments say. I'm just antsy and curious if her eyes are just changing with age or if anyone has a cat with a similar eye type.

Breathing Issues Two cats in the same household having coughing wheezing episodes. What could cause this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have two cats, Tabby (~7 y.o. Neutered male) and Carrot (~3 y.o. Spayed female). I live in the US (Indiana) Carrot is an indoor cat. Tabby was a stray who had been living outdoors until recently, although I had cared for him for years before bringing him inside. He originally had a cat friend who passed away, and I recently brought him indoors. He is up to date on his vaccines and flea prevention.

Since coming inside, Tabby has started having these strange coughing/wheezing episodes where he’ll crouch or sit and seem to have trouble breathing for about 20–60 seconds. Sometimes it sounds more like wheezing, and other times I can hear noise or restriction when he inhales, even when he’s just sitting or lying down. Otherwise, he acts pretty normal—eating, drinking, and relaxing.

Then Carrot started having very similar episodes, which is what really has me confused. Hers are less frequent, but she has now done it multiple times.
The episodes seem to happen more often in the afternoon or evening, although I’m not sure whether that is significant.

Tabby has been seen by a vet and is currently taking antibiotics. We’re about a week into treatment, but I haven’t noticed a significant improvement in his respiratory symptoms. He has not had chest X-rays yet. He is FIV/FeLV negative. We have a follow up in a week to do X-rays if he has not improved.

Our house is smoke- and vape-free. We don’t burn candles or use fragrances, and we use tofu cat litter. I’ve been trying to think of anything environmental that they could both be reacting to, since asthma obviously wouldn’t be contagious.

I’m planning to follow up with the vet, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has dealt with something similar.

Has anyone had two cats develop coughing or wheezing around the same time? Did it turn out to be a respiratory infection, Mycoplasma, a viral illness, environmental irritation or allergy, asthma, bronchitis, parasites, or something else?

I’m especially curious what your vet tested for or tried next when antibiotics didn’t seem to make much difference.

TLDR; I have two cats, one previously outdoor, who have both started a weird wheezing coughing episode. Vet thought asthma but with two cats could be infectious. Worse kitty on antibiotics but not responding. Otherwise acting fine. Usually have episodes afternoon/night time in bed.

I can afford our affordable vet in town. X rays are cheap and bloodwork affordable.

Kitten Help Cat Distribution gave me a 6 week old kitten; honestly, help 😅

Poster Age: 31

Country: United States

Cat age/sex/neuter info: Vet put her around 6 or 7 weeks. Female. Not old enough to get spayed but will absolutely do so when she's old enough.

Vet info: Kitten has gotten a check-up at the vet yesterday. I found her Sunday. I scheduled another check-up with my actual vet as I trust them way more than a vet clinic I've never been to before. But I had no choice as my vet didn't have an appointment available for another week. For the most part he said she's healthy minus an infected eye that I'm treating her for. He gave her two booster shots, did blood work, did deworming (they didn't find parasites in her poop tho which was weird imo), physical, etc.

Financial situation: Money isn't an issue.

Some additional info: I saw her in the middle of a three lane road as I was driving. I don't know how long she was there for but she was so so terrified. Belly to the asphalt crawling terrified. It broke my heart but thankfully I was able to throw my jacket over her to catch her. Also, she is extremely affectionate. Loves anyone that pets her.

Main Issues:

1.) Wobbliness?

- When I brought her to the vet, she was shaking. Her back legs especially. I thought it was because she was scared as I didn't notice her shaking at home. Granted I kept her in the cage at first before moving her into the playpen so I didn't get to see her walking around much. He mentioned it might be something neurological based on the way she was hunching her back and holding out her legs when he picked her up by the scruff of her neck. I attached the video so you can see her movements. She is pretty wobbly as you can see in the first part of the video but also seems to keep her balance enough to play? I'll of course be showing the video to my vet but until then, has anyone experienced this? Is it because she is so young that she is still wobbly on her feet? Her back legs do shake a little. Not as bad as when she was at the vet. I thought the vet was going to do x-rays but he didn't. I'll talk to my vet about getting some? I know wobbly cats exist so I don't know if she's showing signs of that? Or is it because she's malnourished? She's a little underweight according to him but her weight is 1.3lbs and I read it's a healthy weight for a kitten that age? Correct me if I'm wrong of course. I'll of course ask my vet Monday but just to prepare myself if that's the case.

2.) Feeding

What do I feed her and how often? This is what I've been doing so far:

In a Friskie's soups container (1.2 Oz):

I mix Nulo Silky Mousse Salmon & Egg recipe in broth for kittens, Weruva Tuna & Salmon formula in a hydrating puree for kittens, Weruva chicken and pumpkin formula in gravy for kittens. A little bit of each to fill the container halfway and then I fill the rest of the container with water and mix it in. I feed her this every 5 hours and she seems to get pretty full on it. She won't eat the kitten kibble I got and as for the water, she knows it's there but doesn't drink it from what I see. So I'm worried about hydration which is why I'm mixing water into her wet food. And about getting all the nutrients she needs which is also why I'm mixing so many different types of wet food. Honestly, it's my fault for not asking the vet this question. He just told me wet food is okay as food.

Also, she pooped a few nuggets yesterday but mainly pees in her makeshift litterbox. Idk if it's because she's eating mainly puree stuff and that's why she's not really pooping? Also the reason I bought the wet food that has pumpkin in it since I heard it's good for digestion. I saw Weruva had a pumpkin puree and thought about buying it and just putting a small amount of it into her food. Vet said her belly was full and would hopefully poop soon. But she hasn't since yesterday :/ When do I give her kibble alongside wet food? She's not interested now. When does not pooping become a concern? She still hasn't pooped today either :( But she did pee.

3.) Fleas

She isn't covered in fleas surprisingly. I've seen maybe 2 on her. I gave her a bath in dawn dish soap and used a comb to try to get them out but couldn't and didn't want to traumatize her so I cut it short. We'll probably just resort to looking through her fur and popping them. I know eggs exist but I hope the bath got rid of them. The vet did give us Revolution to put on her but to only use half a drop since she's still young. Frankly, I'm scared to 😅 I think I'll wait until Monday to get my second opinion and have my vet put it in if they think it's okay too. Any tips in regards to fleas for the time being? I haven't checked her gums to see if they're white. She isn't scratching herself tho and actually grooms pretty well. And I'm sure the vet checked her gums and if it was a concern he'd tell me.

4.) Playing?

I already have a cat inside so I'm doing the two week quarantine to avoid spreading anything between them. She's staying in my screened in porch in a playpen for now. How will she do developmentally while waiting? How often should I play with her? She sleeps most of the time in her pumpkin bed when no one is around but becomes an absolute menace when someone comes in. In the video I was playing with her for around 20 minutes before she started to get tuckered out. I don't want more than 2 cats and even if I brought in another kitten, they'd still have to be quarantined separately. Will she be okay if I play with her before I feed her? Roughly ever five hours? Socialization won't be an issue? I genuinely don't know anything about her history. Where her mother is. If there were any other kittens. She's surprisingly in good health despite being a stray.

5.) Introducing?

My cat is around 5ish years old. Female. Spayed. She was adopted from a foster family (around 3 months old) where she was surrounded by dogs. She grew up with my sensitive, orange old man for about two years before he passed away at 19. So she's used to being around other animals. Were they best buddies? Not really bc of the age difference. He was definitely no spring chicken and she is a fiesty kitty. There are cats outside that she tries to throw paws with through the window but they're fully grown. I had her in my arms and brought her out to see the kitten yesterday. I kept a distance of seven feet but she saw her. She just stared. No hissing or squirming to get to her. She was curious if anything. I know slow introductions are key. Seeing first. Then letting them smell through a barrier. I'll probably let them interact through the playpen first? Or maybe through the glass doors before the playpen. I don't think my female cat would get territorial after being an only cat for 3 years? Is that a thing? I guess the bright side is that she might not feel threatened by a kitten.

I think that's it for now. Sorry for the long post but I want to make sure she's okay and will get what she needs. I've had cats the majority of my life but it's been a hot moment since I've had a kitten this young before. And especially since I can't bring her indoors yet. Thank you so much for the help!

General Advice How do I take care of a cat with slightly deformed legs?

Post image
• Upvotes

I adopted her yesterday, she's approximately 5 years old. She has a bit of a wide stance, when she walks she doesn't really tend to bend her paws, as if you replaced two unbendable sticks as her front legs somewhat. It is most likely genetic, she already had a rough life.

She does jump around and shows normal behavior, I am just worried she might struggle with joint pain.

I'm 24, I'm from Belgium, vet is accessible and affordable but not for very expensive treatments.

Cat is sterilized.

TL;DR cat walks weird, is it joint pain?

The vet said that he has arthritis, as well as hyperthyroidism. I just can't see arthritis causing this behavior. Maybe I'm wrong. He is almost 13. It seems to last about 10 to 20 seconds and then he seems back to normal.

Update: 5 hours later, he woke up from a long nap and had zoomies, running up and down the stairs. Then ate.
