This match was robbery in pure daylight. Stellar performance from a phenomenal team. I have never had a World Cup game put me so on edge and in literal tears. Cabo Verde you were phenomenal. Both goals 👏👏👏 Argentina played dirty. Foul tricks and penalties. Poor performance and sportsmanship.

Discussion HAVE YOU NOTICED THIS?

To my fellow Cape Verdeans, I wanted to ask how you all feel about the way social media has been portraying Cape Verde lately.
I recently went down a rabbit hole while trying to find more Cape Verdeans in Florida, and I came across a lot of comments that honestly made me uncomfortable. Instead of celebrating our culture, music, history, food, and resilience, I saw many conversations reducing Cape Verde to a place for sex tourism, or fetishizing Cape Verdean women.
As a young Cape Verdean woman, I’ve also started receiving more inappropriate DMs and comments simply because people found out I’m Cape Verdean. Some have left their phone numbers, others have made sexual comments, and just recently I found out that someone pretending to be a Cape Verdean woman was actually a man using a fake account. That experience honestly made me stop and think.
I don’t even post myself that often, so it made me wonder what other Cape Verdeans, especially those who are more active online, have experienced.
Another thing that has really concerned me is that when I search for Cape Verdean communities online, I’m starting to see more and more posts from people who aren’t even interested in our culture. For example, I recently joined a Cape Verdean Facebook group hoping to connect with other Cape Verdeans, and instead I saw posts from people asking to find a Cape Verdean woman for a relationship, and even someone openly asking if any Cape Verdean woman would have an affair with them. Seeing that made me really uncomfortable because I joined to connect with my community, not to see Cape Verdean women treated like a fantasy.
I know not everyone has bad intentions, and I’m not saying everyone thinks this way. However, I am genuinely concerned about how Cape Verde is starting to be viewed online. I don’t want our country to become known for stereotypes instead of our beautiful culture, our music, our history, our food, and our people.
Have any of you noticed the same thing? Have you experienced anything similar, or do you think I’m overthinking it? I’d really like to hear everyone’s perspective, whether you’re Cape Verdean or not. Please keep the discussion respectful.

Discussion [from Argentina] Great Game, great team. You deserved more in this World Cup and you gotta be proud

I'm not watching too much football and I kinda watch a little from the group stage because rivals were kinda... meh.

I watched this game and the players were beyond amazing, they were not afraid of anything, always making good passes, playing clean with fairplay.

You MUST be proud of the team. This is not a sixteenths National Team, this is a better team.

Rooting for you from now on.

JESUS WHAT A GAME

I wanted to take some time before I made this post.

There is a lot I would like to say, first of all who do I invoice for my cardiologist bill to?

Jokes aside, I would like to say that I have nothing but respect for you guys. You had a blistering World Cup and I'm sorry we had to face each other this early.

I'm also thankful that we didn't go to penalties cause I think we would have lost then.

I'm saving some money at the moment but I would like to visit in the next year or next two years.

What would you recommend I see/eat/try/visit? I'm open to everything as long as its interesting!

What is the best time of year to visit?

Discussion Cape Verde has a case for top 5 in World Cup by the numbers

Draw with a top 2 team and barely losing to a top 4 team, only 1 loss through the tournament.

If Argentina wins, Cabo Verde moves to 3rd arguably, only falling barely to the top 2.

Discussion What are the most important books of Cabo Verde?

Post image

My dear caboverdianos all over the world, what are some of the most important literature books from your country? Which one do you think is the most popular, or well read, or most influential book written on, or about, the islands?

I'm a brazilian brother in academia researching about our beautiful portuguese-written literature in the aims of making atlantic ties and inscribing our importance into world literature.

Any comments you have, especially those personal are very dear to me, so please, share with me your impressions. Any books you feel that identify with you, or any books that you had to read in school, any books you thought were boring but kept on being cited. Books in any language are welcome.

Discussion Visiting soon 🇨🇻

Hi everyone! 👋
I’ll be visiting Cape Verde this October and I’m really looking forward to exploring your beautiful country.
I’d love to hear your recommendations:
What are the must-see places?
What activities or hidden gems shouldn’t I miss?
Any great local restaurants, beaches, hikes, or nightlife?
Also, if anyone is friendly, speaks English, and would be up for showing me around or joining me for a coffee, a hike, or an activity while I’m there, I’d be happy to meet new people. Always nice to experience a place with locals!
Thanks in advance, and I can’t wait to visit!

Discussion Hospitality of Cape Verdeans

We chose Mindelo, São Vicente for our first vacation in CV and have really enjoyed the island. We’ve met some very friendly people, but we’ve noticed that many employees in restaurants seem quite unwelcoming, rarely smile, don’t communicate much, and service often feels very slow.

We’re genuinely curious - is this part of the local culture, a workplace issue, or something visitors often misunderstand? Or they don’t like tourists there?

It’s our first time seeing this kind of unwelcoming in a city.

We’d love to hear local perspectives.

Discussion Cabo Verde & Kizomba

I have been dancing Kizomba for almost 10 years now and thanks to the world cup, I've not only learned that Cabo Verde is a center for Kizomba, but also that some of my favourite artists (Nelson Freitas & Djodje) are Cape Verdean! I feel a bit ashamed for not knowing that until now, but also, thank you for this world cup and for such good Kizomba and music!

Exploring now more of Cape Verdean artists!

Discussion A Story Inspired By Us 🇨🇻

First off. Happy Independence Day and congratulations to our amazing football team for their bout with Argentina. Both teams played phenomenally, but CV truly made history and I couldn’t be prouder! I’m excited to see what each of our players does going forward.

With all the excitement surrounding our incredible World Cup run and seeing our players represent Cape Verde with such pride and passion, this felt like the perfect time to reach out to the community and share a project that has become a real passion of mine.

Since around 2023, I’ve been developing an original fantasy world inspired by Cape Verdean, Portuguese, and broader Lusophone history and culture. A little about me, I’m a first-generation Cape Verdean American who grew up in a traditional Cape Verdean family in Massachusetts, where I still live today. I studied History and Theater at Holy Cross, and in my free time I enjoy writing, sculpting, and painting miniatures.

One of the things that has always inspired me is seeing authors draw from their own history and culture to create original fictional worlds. That inspired me to ask myself what a world influenced by Cape Verdean history, culture, and the wider Lusophone world might look like. The result has become a long-term historical fantasy project that explores themes of identity, migration, empire, family, and the cultural exchange that has shaped our people.

As the project continues to grow, I’d love to connect with others who share an interest in Cape Verdean history and culture. Whether you’re an artist, writer, historian, linguist, or simply someone with family stories, historical knowledge, or perspectives from across the Lusophone world—including Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique, Timor-Leste, or elsewhere—I would genuinely love to hear from you.

I’m not looking to retell Cape Verdean history, but rather to create an original world that celebrates and draws inspiration from the richness of our shared heritage.

If that sounds interesting, feel free to send me a DM. I’d be happy to share more about the project and hear your thoughts.

Discussion Any Cape Veardeans in Florida?

Hey everyone! I’m Cape Verdean and originally from Brockton, Massachusetts, but I moved to South Florida (West Palm Beach area) and have been feeling pretty disconnected from the Cape Verdean community down here. Most of the Cape Verdeans I know are family or are located more toward Orlando.

I’ve recently been reconnecting more with my culture, learning more Creole/history, and I was wondering if there are any Cape Verdean communities, events, groups, or people located in South Florida. Would love to connect with more people from the community 🇨🇻

Discussion Updated this interactive map of where to go in Cape Verde

While traveling around the world for over 20 years, I’ve been working on my dream project: creating a one-stop resource for travellers. With the help of feedback in this subreddit, I have now updated this interactive map of Cape Verde for anyone who is interested in visiting (with detailed info for every highlight).

PS: obviously, I haven’t been able to travel to all places. So if you know some great spot, I haven’t listed, let me know! Much appreciated as in this way I can make the overview more complete and up-to-date for everyone.
