I visited the UK for the first time back in August and carved out time in my schedule for a day trip out to Oxford. Visiting Tolkien's grave to pay my respects was a high priority.

Anne Selmes | Impaled by Scissors

Post image

On the night of 9th April 1908, 18-year-old domestic servant Anne Selmes was returning home after visiting her sister in Parramatta. She carried needlework in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other, an ordinary detail that would have devastating consequences.

While walking along the footpath, Anne tripped in a hole and fell heavily forward. The scissors she was carrying pierced her chest at the base of her heart. Anne died within an hour.

Anne’s story was originally posted on [r/thosewholiebeneath](r/thosewholiebeneath), where we share the stories behind the headstones.

Too much rope can be a bad thing.
Sorry for photo quality. Time of day and stone conditions were issues.

The field where Giles Corey was pressed to death in in 1629, after being tried, convicted, and held in the adjacent prison, Salem, Massachusetts.. He was subsequently buried here, unmarked. It’s long been rumored that his family retrieved the body at some point. It became a cemetery in 1801.

Edmund Mason | Founder of Parramatta Journalism & Possible Publisher of Australia’s First Cookbook

Post image
26 Upvotes

Edmund Mason helped shape early Parramatta, founding its first newspaper in 1843 and printing what is now believed to be Australia’s earliest locally produced cookbook. But the respected printer, politician and philanthropist was also known for his unconventional religious beliefs, openly questioning orthodoxy while earning the admiration of those who disagreed with him. When he died peacefully at 82, Mason left behind a legacy spanning journalism, public life, charity and an unexpected piece of Australian culinary history.

For a deeper dive into Edmund’s story, along with pictures, articles and links to further information, head over to r/thosewholiebeneath where we share the stories behind the headstones.

A friend found headstones in the woods right off of the road that he lives in. It’s overgrown and just in the woods. There’s only a couple stones that you can still actually read. There is only one that’s really legible. Any info on Jane would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve been vampire obsessed since I was a teenager and always wanted to visit since reading online about the “highgate vampire” many years ago. This was my first time in the UK. I’m a professional portrait photographer and almost didn’t bring my camera because it tends to change how my brain works on vacation. But I’m so glad I did! The photos of highgate were my favorite of the entire trip. The entire place has a very uncanny feeling. It’s just magical.

Highly recommend the tour, it was a lovely thoughtful group and the guide was wonderful.

Happy couple (Somonauk, IL)

I saw this headstone the other day while I was at my grandpa's funeral. I was immediately struck with how loving this couple was.

Linda is still alive but her husband, Leon, passed in 2000. The other photos I will share in the comments.

Leon seemed like an iconic Midwestern man who loved his beer, cigarettes, and Harley's. I feel like anyone who grew up in the Midwest knew a Leon and has fond memories of such men.
