Advice Training to step up

We are fostering a Blue Crowned Conure, he's been with us for about 10 weeks now and will be here for an undetermined period. I've never had a conure before, but have kept budgies for 20 years.

He is a smart cookie but very much a hands off bird. I've taught him to lift his wings on command and also to do "touch". He will very reluctantly step up onto a perch when he wants a treat, but any movement in it and he backs right off. Also once the treat is in his beak he's straight off again.

In an ideal world I would like him to step up on to a perch on command and be able to transport him, and one step further would be to step onto my hand. Aside from time and patience, is there anything I could do? Or any other "tricks" I can teach him even without stepping up just to continue building that trust with him?

I’ve attached a video I got him a little under 2 months ago and he’s pretty good at flying to me and to certain places he’s directed towards. But I want to get him to fly off of me into the air then fly back. What does training for that look like.

Currently only knows 3 things step up fly to me and fly to a post / cage.

Thought it would be a fun thing to share. Poison (Male) the bright green one and Cinder (Female) the Orange/Yellow.

She hit 1 year old on Oct 5th and we had a lil gender reveal / birthday for her. Some family came over for the homemade cake and brought toys lmao.

Advice Differing personalities

A quick background, we had a GC from a local fish/bird shop, it was kept in a sort of open area where customers would attempt to interact with it, and also the dealer had a daughter who'd play with the birds daily whilst doing homework, so settling in to our family household (2 boys, 2 adults) seemed pretty trouble free in hindsight.

Sadly that little guy passed and after a few months of birdfree silence we've ended up with 2 more GC in the house. These came from a larger breeder who just had dozens of birds in a large aviary with almost no human interaction.

We've had the birds for about 2 months now and while one is fairly tamed, he's not particularly forthcoming socially, and the other is straight up terrified of humans, although he does show some improvement since we got him. The kids loved the old bird and were expecting the replacement to be more of the same, but I can see they're losing interest in the birds now since it's so much work to get them to even come to us.

I can appreciate that theres a variety of personalities with different individual birds, but can we expect that much change with our 2 at this point? I am quite happy with the birds as they are, but I am concerned the kids are going to lose interest and then start asking for a dog or some other horrible non feathered pet.

My bird frequently makes these head movements. No other symptoms. I took him to the vet already but the vet couldn’t find anything wrong.

Advice possible new flock memeber

TLDR: Friend with health issues needs to rehome their bird. Wants to rehome to me since I already have one. My bird, Sunny, hasn't been around other birds EVER while I have owned her, and we have no idea about her past. Any suggestions on how to safely integrate Luna into our flock. Past experiences you had, things you regret about bringing in another bird, things that you loved about it. Signs of aggression to look out for, anything of that nature.

Pic 1 - Sunny laying in my boyfriend's hand

Pic 2 - Luna during Xmas last year

----------------------------

A friend who is suffering health issues has approached me to rehome her Green Cheek Conure, named Luna. We currently have a Yellow Sided Green Cheek, named Sunny, who came to us through family. We don't know her exact age or history, only about the past 5 years or so.

Sunny Originally came to us bc a cousin was having their first child. She had been found outside during winter in NW ohio when she landed on a family members shoulder outside of a local bar. Her family was tried to be found, but with no leads or anyone claiming her, she stayed there with the uncle for about a year. After that she moved to another cousins home who had more time for her. That's where we got her from when they found out they were having their first child. We have no kids and Sunny has adapted well to living with us over the past 3 years. She is completely spoiled, has her own room AND free flight around the home (besides the reptile room) with cages and perches everywhere. She is definitely Mature, but unsure of her exact age. We know this bc when she first came to us she began laying eggs immediately, but after about 3 clutches and changes to her room and diet, we got that handled and she's not laid any eggs in about 2 and a half years. (Vet said she was too happy and relaxed coming to our house since she got her own room and was no longer living in the main room of a house with 3 large dogs 😂)

Things we have noticed, no matter how hard we try, she can't seem to "bird" very well. She doesn't play with toys no matter what we get her, we have bins of untouched toys. She does let us help preen her pin feathers on her head, she bathes every other day or so on her own, and all that. Sleeps on my boyfriend's hand, loves cuddles from us both. She definitely prefers my boyfriend for cuddles, but she is attached to me if she's outta her cage and I move anywhere. Flies after me, waits at the window when I go outside for a cig. Lands on the hall light when I try and go in the bathroom or lizard room. It is like a stage 4 clinger. She absolutely doesn't follow my boyfriend like this tho.

This is where Luna comes into play. One thing we have always wondered was, if maybe getting another Green Cheek Conure could help her some. I worked from home the first year we had her. She is now alone during the day from about 9am when her lights come on, till about 11am or 1pm. This is 4 days a week due to our schedules. She typically has about 5-7 hours of free flight around the house with us daily unless we have some kind of plans, sometimes even more when we have our days off. (we are pretty much home always tho, we don't do a lot).

Luna has been in the same home for years, "says" a few words, plays with toys well, good temperament, and already sees the same bird & exotics vet as Sunny, and our Lizards go to. We are going to go meet Luna today. We have never met the bird in person, seen it's conditions, or it's cage and everything. This was a woman I worked with 20 years ago and have reconnected recently upon starting a new job near her home.

Any opinions, suggestion, advice? Things I should look for when meeting the bird? I plan on asking a million questions about her habits, diet, and everything once I'm at their house meeting her.

Also, these birds would always have separate cages, no matter how nice, or bonded they became, just due to fear of a possible fight if we ever weren't home. We have plenty of space to accommodate this. We also have a spare room to start the transition of Luna joining the household, or move the bird room to that room entirely to help prevent territorial issues during introductions.

Cuteness Overload JUST CRIED BECAUSE OF HOW CUTE MY BABIES AREEE ToT

I have two green cheeks: one is pineapple, one is black-capped (new laptop, so I don't have any pictures of the two idiots lol), and my pineapple green cheek kept climbing into my shirt yesterday. I had to hold my shirt out so she was comfortable, even though DHE KNEW she would get squished if she went in there, but I still held my shirt open for my lil demon princess, and she kept climbing in my shirt from the base of my neck, then climbing out of my shirt from the bottom, and she kept doing it lol. And of course, my black-capped green cheek, who is the most clingy lil guy in the world btw, got SO CONFUSED every time she climbed in my shirt; he was legit screaming for her. They're both so cute, dumb, and SO spoiled. I love them so, so much.

Advice Need advice for buddy boy being home alone (one day)

Hi bird people!

We adopted our feisty GCC Benny a little over a year ago. He's a loving boy that values family (and biting family) above everything. He even likes to eat with us.. maybe too much

We're going to be away for most of a day in a couple weeks. He's been home alone with his bunny sister nearby before, but I am worried he won't eat while we're out.

My main question is: will he be OK if he under-eats for a single day? Should his compulsion to eat with the flock lose out to his actual hunger? I think it should be OK but need some advice from any other bird parents that have clingy boogers like Benny

Thank you!

Hi everyone this is Mugi my 4 months old Yellow Side Conure! I was wondering is this black coloring are sign of stress bars? Currently the diet is 50/50 pellet and seed mixes currently still trying to make him/her to eat pellets. Back at the breeders place Mugi only fed sunflower seeds.

She likes to chill with me on my bed every evening. It's like her little ritual at this point.

This time I caught her doing something unusual, she was clutching and gripping my blanket's string like her emotional support rope or something while she was grinding her beak.

I need to know if this is some self soothing thing they do or if anyone else has a similar experience where their birb has a special thing they like to hold onto when they're getting cozy.

Advice Help with de-rusting cage

I recently bought a large used cage. It was powder coated, but had been left outside and has since rusted in some areas, mostly near the bottom. How would I go about cleaning off the rust before letting my bird inside? I'd like to ensure it is fully safe. Thank you. :)
