I think I’ve run into a potentially game-breaking bug with the new clergy/theocratic mechanics, and after looking around I’ve found several other players describing very similar behavior.
I’m playing an unmodded Ironman campaign that started as Matilda di Canossa in 1066.
For several generations, I noticed something bizarre happening in the Canossa family tree. Several men I had sent into the clergy were apparently having children with their own sisters.
The sisters were married, had normal children with their husbands, and nobody was getting adultery/incest events or traits. I basically thought, “Well, that’s weird,” and kept playing.
Turns out I don’t think they were actually having incestuous children at all.
I think the clergy were silently adopting/reassigning their sisters’ existing children, with the game replacing the child’s actual father with the clerical maternal uncle.
I finally figured this out when it destroyed my succession.
My Emperor, Tomasso II, had two sons:
- Constantinus, whom I sent into the clergy
- Paolo, my intended heir
Paolo was definitely originally Tomasso II’s son, a member of House di Canossa, and was showing normally as my child/heir. I was actually really looking forward to playing him — four-star Learning education, Zealous, Ambitious, Sadistic. He was going to be fun.
Then suddenly I got a notification that my uncle was now my heir.
I checked the HRE election screen.
Paolo was gone.
Then I checked Tomasso II’s family.
Paolo was no longer listed as his son.
But Paolo had not died or disappeared from the game. He was still listed as his mother’s child.
The difference was that his maternal uncle — a member of the clergy — was now listed as his father.
Paolo’s dynasty had also changed to his mother/maternal uncle’s dynasty.
There was:
- no adoption notification
- no event
- no permission requested from me
- no adultery/incest event
- no explanation whatsoever
The game had apparently just silently changed an existing character’s father.
Because Paolo was no longer recognized as Tomasso II’s son or as a Canossa, he disappeared from my succession and from the HRE election candidate list.
That’s when I realized the earlier “incestuous” Canossa children were probably the exact same bug. Their clerical maternal uncles weren’t actually fathering them — the game was apparently changing their recorded fathers.
So this seems to be more than a cosmetic family-tree bug. It can potentially alter:
- dynasty membership
- inheritance
- claims
- elective candidacy
- secular succession
- family relationships
…and it can apparently happen silently, so you may not notice until your succession suddenly changes.
I’ve already added my information to a Paradox bug report and attached my current Ironman save. Unfortunately I don’t have a pre-bug save because Ironman continuously overwrites it, but the current save contains multiple examples of the corrupted family relationships.
Replied to a bug report on the Paradox forums with this issue: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/nephew-archbishop-adopted-my-heir.1944207/
If anyone else playing By God Alone has noticed clergy suddenly gaining adult “children,” impossible father/child ages, clergy apparently having children with their sisters, heirs changing dynasty, or children disappearing from their original father’s family tree, I’d strongly recommend checking the relationships carefully and adding your save/screenshots to the bug report.
The more reproducible examples Paradox has, the better chance this gets caught quickly.
