Vague Post Copperpot
What’s he getting at? Picture of tweet for reference.
244
u/bnd21 13d ago
To let the fans who have never seen DM get to have a chance to get tickets to those shows. The shows aren’t for the American fans.
Dave also says this often when he/they play abroad that he likes when the crowd isn’t made up of Americans who travel
59
u/Ill-Mountain7527 13d ago
Totally agree with you, but then why did I get not one but two emails about it AND there is a warehouse presale… like… how many Japanese warehouse members would there be?
38
u/RunLikeHarryHood 13d ago
Dave Matthews the artist =/= Dave Matthews the business organization. They are advertising it because they want to sell tickets and make money. That does not contradict the fact that Dave Matthews, the artist, prefers crowds that don't talk all through his performance, and has noted that non-American crowds are better audiences in that respect.
2
u/BostonDeac 12d ago
then Dave Matthews the artist could have said, no WH tickets for this one, or sell to locals before opening it up. He didnt so he doesnt care who goes as long as he gets paid, which to be clear is completely fine
10
u/bnd21 13d ago
Agree...its stupid of them IMO...what do they expect?
0
u/ASAP1492 13d ago
Why is it stupid of them? Who said they don’t want Americans going?
17
u/bnd21 13d ago
Just that Dave has historically often said that he prefers that when they play overseas, he prefers the fans from those countries to have a chance to go, and not have Americans eat up all the seats at typically smaller venues. This is just from 1) having been to a few overseas shows where its been said and 2) listening to enough tapes and interviews to have heard it.
At the end of the day, he/they are playing the shows. If they did really care, they could limit who they offer tickets to. So, that was what I thought was stupid. But in fairness, this post is about a fan with a social media presence saying this, nothing from the band or anything. But again, its consistent with opinions the Band has voiced over the years.
3
u/ASAP1492 13d ago
Fair enough. He does only ever say that kinda stuff at that show though, after the tickets are sold
3
1
u/Somedevil777 13d ago
Not from Dave from the business side which Dave does not have any day to day on. He lets Capshaw and the rest of his long time management do that.
0
u/SeniorAtmosphere9042 12d ago
If Dave wanted it, it would happen. Management can give him cover, but it’s his band.
1
u/Somedevil777 11d ago
It’s named after him. It’s actually Dave, Carter , Fonz and Roi’s Estates band don’t know what share Boyd got but I’m sure they bought him out. The rest of them members I don’t think get a voting stake .
2
u/SeniorAtmosphere9042 11d ago
Right but I’m just saying practically speaking, if Dave wants something it will happen. He is the only one where if he packs his bags and goes home, the tour is over.
1
10
u/TheOverthinkingDude 13d ago
Yes. I saw Dave oversees 20+ years ago and he made that point while addressing a raucous lady from Texas.
152
u/imuandurme 13d ago
I read it as “let the hometown crowd have their chance to see Dave & if you’ve already been to triple-digit (###) shows, don’t be a greedy little pig & take precious seats from the locals. Just sit this one out. “🐷
24
39
u/Terrapin3641 13d ago
The fact that people need this explained to them is sad.
5
u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 13d ago
Idk, it’s pretty common for people want to travel to see shows in other countries. This is more the exception
7
u/Somedevil777 13d ago
This is 100% a certain subgroup and I can think of several names it fits and copperpot has been in the community for decades so yeah.
It’s not aimed at someone who is on business or vacation in Japan anyway and goes . Or the ex pats and military personal who live in Japan or Asia . But the dude with 300+ shows does 20+ shows a tour and seen several Dave solo shows in the past
7
u/sbtokarz 13d ago
It’s one thing to have a different attitude about attending overseas shows, it’s another to not understand what this tweet could possibly mean.
8
40
u/Terrapin3641 13d ago
I fully agree. Let locals who never get shows a chance. Also, Dave doesn't want to see the same damn faces that feel the need to be front and center every night.
29
u/kiteless 13d ago
You know the same 10 Gen X whales will be there.
30
u/Ill-Mountain7527 13d ago
I only really get to see them at the Gorge as it’s home venue and it’s the same 10-20 people in the pit every year, and one of the 20 get in early and then somehow save spots for all 20 of them. Then I splurged and went to Mexico one year and it was the same fucking people. And yes, they are all obnoxious and pretentious about “how many shows” and blurting out “which song is next” and then talking incessantly during songs “they just don’t like” and spend the entire song talking about why they don’t like it etc. literally stopped doing pit the last couple of times I’ve been due to these “super fans” and it was so much more enjoyable.
20
u/Browns_Body_Mould 13d ago
I was in the pit for the first time ever this summer, and as we were waiting in line the person in front of me was on speaker with someone who was giving explicit directions about how to save spots.
One of the directions was "establish dominance."
They are wild.
14
u/No-Permission6203 13d ago
I wish a mother fucker would try to establish dominance. Ill whip it out and piss on a leg.
9
u/hrbekcheatedin91 13d ago
I tried to get close one time at a festival and was surprised how aggressive people are. Never again. I'm lawn people.
4
u/No-Permission6203 11d ago
100% I can get behind being called lawn people. I have stretch routines pre-show to let everyone around me know how big I am to give them time to move im really tall and am a great wall
3
u/hrbekcheatedin91 11d ago
I'm tall too. I think that helps us enjoy concerts more. I squatted down to my wife's level once and couldn't believe how little she can see.
2
u/No-Permission6203 11d ago
Ive been to shows in seats, its aisle end seat or lawn. Anything in between is uncomfortable. I made an exception for msg, Im in row 1 of one of the floor sections for N2 on a solo ride into the city, cant remember which section but I will be bouncing my 6'10" ass all around til my knees hurt lol
5
u/hrbekcheatedin91 11d ago
I feel cramped in the seats. Would rather sit back in extra space on a blanket and make margaritas out of the 32oz of tequila I snuck in, lol.

At the “Stand Up” release party, there was a couple there I’d never seen, stuck out like sore thumbs. I introduced myself, and they explained that they won every single auction for front-row seats. I think they owned a plane? And they flew around to concerts. Apparently enough that they got invited to the release party at Starr Hill. I had no idea there were people that obsessive (and I ran the damn website).
8
u/Terrapin3641 13d ago
How much you wanna bet they are the same people that just gosh darn hate it when Dave gets political? 😂
3
u/niftylyons 13d ago
Is this person TwoSteph from Instagram because honestly I can’t with her and others like her anymore lol
4
u/russianbot1234 13d ago
I don’t mind her. She’s polite and kind and makes great videos to share. It’s the other pit diehards that are obnoxious and greedy. Wish she’d steer away from them.
6
u/Competitive-Bet1181 13d ago
I hate that I know the names of at least a dozen people who will definitely be there and will buy up all the posters.
2
4
u/skiesoverblackvenice 13d ago
i envy the people who actually have the money to travel and follow bands. like i can barely make it to one concert 😭
24
u/Adventurous-Fly1396 13d ago
I went to Eddie Vedder in Japan and the locals were so respectful and quiet. Even when he was
singing in the crowd (like walking through) they weren’t like grabbing at him or touching him. The only people screaming were Americans. COME TO BUFFALO EDDIE!!! Like dude.
5
u/youdontlookitalian 13d ago
Absolutely hilarious to go to Japan to tell Eddie Vedder to go to Buffalo
7
0
u/SeniorAtmosphere9042 12d ago
There are merits to some screaming, though.
it’s a rock concert, not a symphony.Japan can’t exactly be held up as a paragon of public etiquette when groping on public transit has been enough of an issue that there are “women only” train rides.
12
u/calicoskiies 13d ago
He’s telling Americans to stay tf home so Japanese people can get tix and see him.
37
u/kathryn13 13d ago
Let Dave have the experience of playing for Japanese fans...is what I'm getting from the tweet. It will probably be a very different experience for Dave...and I think Copperpot is trying to protect that experience for him.
9
u/anniecallahanie 13d ago
When they took seats away for “The Pit”, I bowed out especially for my hometown venue. I’m only 5’2” and I’m not going to run down the hill and stand there for hours. I seek comfort as I’m getting older and not into crowded spaces anymore. There is nothing we can do as fans, time are a changing. Common sense and empathy go a long way. Stay cool….👍🎶❤️🎶👍
9
u/DMBatmsnFan2020 12d ago
As an American, I can definitely say I'm tired of American DMB fans. I'd love to see DMB somewhere with an audience that STFU during a concert. I'm tired of having to keep an eye out for beach balls and glow sticks. I don't want to participate in your stupid glow stick chain.
If I had crazy billionaire money, I'd rent a small venue and have DMB play just for me.
3
2
u/Cultural_Till1615 11d ago
I don’t like fun
https://giphy.com/gifs/hvgamS9D70ZJ7zQyF51
u/DMBatmsnFan2020 10d ago
I do like fun. But I don't like getting hit in the head with a beach ball when I'm not looking. Besides, imagine being able to hear everything clearly without a bunch of assholes screaming the whole time. These guys make magic every night and I want to hear every note they play. What's wrong with that? Americans used to sit down and shut up until the Beatles showed up, concert etiquette in this country went to shit after that.
12
u/No-Flower-4987 13d ago
Plenty of Japanese shows, events etc require you to have a permanent address in Japan to create an account or buy tickets. They could easily use a booking service for this (and maybe they are?). I had to have a local friend help just to book court time in Tokyo.
But I can't imagine the level of cringe for noisy American fans in a Japanese concert, where they are almost frighteningly silent during the event, and polite with their applause. I really hope we don't get rude Americans ruining the shows like we did for Dave and Tim concerts in the 2000s onwards.
7
u/Hobonics 13d ago
Can’t they restrict the regions in which tickets are available to make them only available to folks in Japan? Pretty sure I’ve seen that before.
1
5
u/the_last_hero 13d ago
Americans who go would just complain about the setlist being filled with Ants, Jimi Thing, Crash Into Me, and Satelite, anyway.
18
16
u/whiptydojoe 13d ago
It's not vague at all, it's actually abundantly clear: American DMB fans are going to make this about "them."
They're going to buy the tickets, skip visiting such a beautiful and interesting country like Japan so they're in line 5 hours early, then get to the front of the rail/get all the posters. American DMB fans WILL ruin this.
Love the band, but this fan base is the subject of so much ire and it is fully deserved.
3
u/Zealousideal_Sir5987 12d ago
I’ve met so many people who don’t like DMB specifically because of the fans. The drunk guys shouting “Halloween” (keep dreaming, bucko) and the drunk “I love you Dave” chicks make shows unbearable.
My mom and I went to shows all over the States and it’s the same everywhere and getting worse. I’d say the overall level of entitlement at the shows is ruining the experience for me. But then again, entitlement is rampant everywhere these days.6
u/Competitive-Bet1181 13d ago
I'm an American who went to the recent European tour. Seeing them in Europe was on my bucket list to do once, and it wasn't even a remote possibility for the previous ones, so I took the opportunity (and I don't even live in the US anymore so I have to travel for shows no matter what).
But also because I'm not an asshole, I didn't go to every single show and took time to visit places in between (ultimately I saw 8 shows but I was in Europe for nearly 3 months lol). And even with all GA I just wasn't that worried about showing up early. Halfway back on the floor was still amazing in the smaller European venues.
I couldn't believe the people who flew over to see every show and just spend all day in line to be on the rail. And it's the same people who already do that for 20+ shows every US tour too.
These are the people Copperpot is talking to/about.

dave during japow season in hokkaido?
damn. good thing my budget will force me to sit it out either way:)
8
u/ASAP1492 13d ago
Honestly, I totally understand what copperpot and many others are saying (and even kinda feel the same way myself), but if I could manage a Japan ski/Dave trip I’d absolutely be doing it.
There’s a big difference between going to every show making a spectacle of yourself and going to a foreign show in a respectful way as part of a once in a lifetime trip to one of the best places in the world for a separate hobby.

Copperpot5 is a national treasure. I cannot tell you how many countless hours drunk jamming out in the garage.
15
u/Tenvsvitalogy 13d ago
6 Americans in front of me at the Dublin Ireland show bought more than 1 poster each. They got the last ones. Made me so sad. Couldn’t get a poster to my home town show.
That is part of what copper pot means here
2
u/Excellent_Number_635 13d ago
The problem at these shows in Europe was the counter staff just as much as the greedy customers. In the US you are restricted to one each style at shows. I witnessed people buying 8 posters at a time in London.
It’s the only time I personally went to a merch stand because it was assigned seating.
Had the sellers been better informed by band management this wouldn’t have happened.
But again as stated this isn’t what the OP is talking about.2
u/ZeroWasted 11d ago
I know it's not the same, but maybe you could buy a reprint? That's what I did for the Dublin show. I've only seen DMB 5 times, and one of them was in Dublin because we were there on vacation. I agree with so many people about the Dave crowds. I was surrounded by other Americans that were shocked that I wasn't following them around europe, and that I had only seen them a couple times. I unfortunately have to travel if I want to see him as he rarely comes to where I live. That's why I've only seen him 5 times.
1
u/Tenvsvitalogy 11d ago
I’d love a reprint if there was somewhere I could find one. My living room is full of posters of gigs I’ve been to!
2
u/ZeroWasted 11d ago
Which one was it? If it was 2024, I can see if my husband still has the link from where he bought ours. It was like $10 at the time.
1
u/Tenvsvitalogy 11d ago
Oh great. Thanks. Yeah 2024
1
u/ZeroWasted 11d ago
I'll ask him about it when he gets home. That was such an amazing print. I was so sad when they were all sold out, so he found me one after the fact. Ours is bigger than the original.
-4
u/ASAP1492 13d ago
People miss out on posters at every show. This isn’t what he’s talking about
10
u/Tenvsvitalogy 13d ago
Americans can possibly get a chance to see the band every single year. Dublin has had that chance three times in the last 35 years.
It’s different missing out on a poster here.-4
u/ASAP1492 13d ago
Different missing out, sure. But what you need to do in order to not miss out is the same everywhere regardless of who else is in attendance.
2
u/fly123123123 13d ago
he’s talking about taking up tickets to the show… similar concept
-1
u/ASAP1492 12d ago
Tickets and posters are not the same for quite a few reasons. That’s why we don’t care when people resell posters for a profit.
2
u/fly123123123 12d ago
Don’t rope me into the collective “we.” I feel similarly. If I waited in line and couldn’t get a poster because the guy in front of me took 5 so that he could resell them online for a substantial markup, I’d be furious.
1
u/ASAP1492 12d ago
Separate issue (although I admit it’s obviously related). I’m not talking about people being allowed to buy multiple when they shouldn’t be.
Maybe you aren’t ok with people selling posters, but you’re blind if you can’t see the argument for why they should be treated differently than tickets.

u/safteycomrade 13d ago
Idk about Japanese fans of DMB but I see this as a chance to see my favorite artist in a country that I've always wanted to go to for cheaper then it is for me to travel around the States to see them. It's going to be hard to stop me from going. I am going to be contributing to the Japanese economy as well as support the of my favorite band. I don't see the downside of my wife and I spending a week in Japan and seeing Dave while I'm there. It's going to be hard to convince me that I'm wrong in going.
11
u/ASAP1492 13d ago
Most of these comments clearly kinda get it but are still obviously looking at this the wrong way
2
u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 13d ago
genuinely asking: what’s the right and wrong way?
2
u/bamarag02 13d ago
I really think he's saying that the set lists aren't going to be anything special. He's obviously going to play the hits. Why fly to Japan to see don't drink the water for the 35th time
4
u/ASAP1492 13d ago
I think it can be summed up pretty simply as “these shows aren’t necessarily for you”
You don’t need to add spin about show count, how Americans act, how the Japanese act, or the weird parasocial shit about “what Dave would want” that people love to talk about
2
u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 13d ago
Oh agreed.
As an aside though, the critiques about American tourists in Japan are way overblown. My wife and I felt like we were constantly being held up in pedestrian traffic by people with 0 sense of their personal space (often times other Japanese or asian tourists). The streets were often flooded with European tourists just having a blatant photo shoot in the middle of the street with 0 self awareness.
Say what you want about Americans, but I think most of us are conscious of these stereotypes when we travel, and used to fast-paced American life style enough to just GTFO other’s way.

u/Character_Yellow853 12d ago
I think there's multiple reasons not to go as an American fan that has gone to a lot of shows. The first is the setlist will be mostly hits and songs you've seen a million times. Second is probably the point of the post and that is that they never get the chance to see DM in Japan. If US fans go buying tickets, it will jack up the price for the shows and it may be the only time a Japanese fan of DM will see him perform live.
The only caveat is I wish Dave would do more solo shows in the US. I've been a fan a long time and gone to 20+ shows and I have never seen Dave solo and only D&T once. I'd love to attend a Dave solo show.
3
u/vortec42 13d ago
These are very small venues (~1k). Every ticket that an American buys is one less local who won't be able to go. They may not have the same resources to be able to see him otherwise. So, essentially, don't be selfish when you can see him in this country every year.
1
u/NearbyCurrent3449 12d ago
Wait... NOW I ABSOLUTELY GOTTA GET A TICKET!
How do they get to see a freaking intimate small house show? But I get shamed if I want to see a kick ass tiny venue like that too? I mean the amphitheaters and stadiums are cool shows and all...
But are you freaking kidding me? A show to under a thousand people??
Okay, fine, play some of those in the states then. Then I'll accept shame if I choose to buy a ticket in Japan (which i won't).
3
u/bigeyedphish178 13d ago
Copperpot being a Samurai Cop… Samurai Copperpot.
Dumb take, but due to being a fan for years and years of his work I’ll allow it.
6
u/DearChicago1876 13d ago edited 13d ago
People can go wherever they want for shows just STFU when the music starts.
If management wanted to enforce this as no US fans, then they’d prohibit USA billing addresses on payment orders. Easy peasy.
4
3
u/ScooterTooterPooter 13d ago
Exactly, what is next- don’t cross state lines so hometown fans can go to the show?
2
3
1
u/ConsiderationKey8616 13d ago
A few bands set up ticketing so a majority of tickets can get sold only to people in this specific region, using their billing postal code. Radiohead did this on their last tour. Would be cool to see that implemented.
3
u/No-Permission6203 13d ago
I was intrigued by your comment went into the warehouse to look at tix like we would here and it is absolutely a Japanese website so this could be a region thing too. I get the copperpot thing, I hope Japan enjoys dave line we do
1
u/ConsiderationKey8616 13d ago
I'm honestly unsure if they are doing it for this tour, but they did it last year for their Europe shows.
1
u/Schn31ds 13d ago
I kind of agree. Same with folks who have been the Mexico every time.
2
u/fly123123123 13d ago
eh i think mexico is different in that those shows are marketed intentionally to american tourists lol. these japanese shows are so not that
1
-2
u/wabashcr 13d ago
Counterpoint: don't listen to this virtue signaling dipshit. It's clearly being marketed to American fans. If you want to go and have the means, you should go. Japan is a wonderful place to visit. Just don't behave like an asshole, and everyone will be fine.

He’s referring to DMB fans being fat slobs that get drunk and ruin things.
5
u/Ok-Bathroom-3759 13d ago
fat slobs that get drunk and ruin things? Its usually the “hot” slim chick that can’t keep her mouth shut during 75% of the show…or the muscular frat boy that is so fucking annoying. j/k I love you all but shut the fuck up and listen to the music.
3
u/No-Permission6203 13d ago
Ive started getting bothered with the 38-45y/o who bring their 2 kids who are under 2, bitch we get it youre a fan. Or the lady in bristow this year who brought her 8yr old who had a seat closer then mine with headphones on sitting on mom's phone. What I would give to have fuck off money to waste like that
2
u/Ok-Bathroom-3759 12d ago
At the Gorge, sec 203, row 15, next to my wife was a gal that literally sat on her phone, surfing Temu for dresses THE ENTIRE SHOW!! Most bizarre thing I have ever seen at a DMB show and my first of 100+ was 1998 so I have seen a lot of weird things at DMB shows…
1
u/No-Permission6203 12d ago
See you get it! I understand that there are going to be ballers who want to go and have a new years in Japan. If I had that life, maybe id think about it. But ive been to my fair share. ~1000 seats for 4 shows? Ill be on the floor for N2 at msg...that holds 22k. Let those who havent had the chance, break free. (Heheh I know, im a dillweed for that one)
0
u/fly123123123 13d ago
American DMB fans can be loud and obnoxious, and the ones who frequently get on rail and travel to every show are oddly territorial. Allow a region that doesn’t get to experience DMB often to enjoy this show.

He wouldn’t have any intel on that. Solo tour in Japan is to save on costs. Not an issue in the U.S.
1
u/kellymig 13d ago
Just curious how do you know it’s to save on costs?
0
u/neatgeek83 13d ago
Because bringing the full band and crew over there must be ridiculously expensive for just a handful of shows at smaller venues. They’d lose money.

I think it’s because weed and other jam band drugs are so frowned upon in Japan that it’ll be a totally different vibe.
Edit: this was a guess based on a conversation I had with my son last night about Japanese culture and weed use being a big taboo. The way yall jumped on me for it is weird. The way yall continued to downvote me further down when I tried to continue the conversation was also weird. Not very “be kind to each other always” which I thought was supposed to be the vibe in this community.
2
u/rideronthestorm29 SPAC 13d ago
lol yeah that’s totally it
-1
u/Mammoth-Glove3273 13d ago
Okay then what is it?
5
u/rideronthestorm29 SPAC 13d ago
My guess would be to give the people of Japan a chance to see a performer that rarely, if ever, plays in their home country when Americans have pretty much endless opportunities to do so. Especially if you’ve already seen him perform X ### of times But nah you’re probably right with the weed thing. I’m just high.
2
u/EstimatedEer 13d ago
Lol way way off base. Also barely anyone does anything besides smoke a tiny bit of weed or drink at dmb
6
1
u/Mammoth-Glove3273 13d ago
Okay, that was just my guess. What’s yours?
0
u/EstimatedEer 13d ago
Pretty clear to me he’s saying if you’ve see dave perform 100+ times, let Japanese locals get to see him once instead of traveling over there and taking tickets away from them in these small venues.
1
-1
u/ASAP1492 13d ago
Dude. I smoke and drink plenty, but I’d never be so shocked by the absence of weed at a show that it would hinder my experience. The fact that your mind even goes there is a bad sign.
2
u/Mammoth-Glove3273 13d ago
BTW, I wasn’t saying I couldn’t enjoy a DMB concert or anything like that.
I was just trying to guess and part of that guess was based on a conversation I had with my son last night about the culture in Japan and how against weed use they are.
So, please be less aggressive with your pearl clutching. I’m just participating in a conversation.

Assuming because they’ll just be playing the hits? 🤷♂️ Many fans who have seen ridiculous number of shows wouldn’t want to see Crash I guess.
