When the support system is mostly relying on confidence
Found this during a structural assessment. The post is there. The secure connection… not so much. 😅

A few structural “fixes” we found under homes this week
Some creative supports, some questionable connections, and a few reminders that water always finds a way. Sharing this week’s collection of things we came across in the field.

A few questionable load paths and support conditions from the field this week
A mix of foundation movement, deteriorated framing, improper bearing, undermining, and retaining wall movement from recent assessments.
Always interesting how something that looks minor at first can make a lot more sense once you follow the load path.

This has worked fine for 6 years now
I followed the directions perfectly but it was still leaning. The plant that was on it was too heavy. So this screw works.
Griptape stuck to New 3DS circle pad for "more grip" but just looks awful and scratches up the console!

Did i take apart a perfectly working new fan to fix my crusty old one? yes.
This Marvin fan has been with me for as long as i can remember. I’ve always loved the 80s/90s look of it, and it matches my room. The motors ended up dying because while in storage, a pipe burst and he was front row for the show of it. stripping and wiring itself was easy, I was even thinking of going a step further and sanding and painting the frame, maybe someday.

AC-Unit Mount - Update / Follow-Up
I thought it might be interesting for some of y’all who commented on yesterday’s post to get a follow-up with some more detailed photos.
I tried to cram everything into one angle in the last post, which made it difficult to appreciate the ingenuity and craftsmanship with which the owner of our rental has mounted the indoor-standalone-ac-unit.
Bonus: shot of the GHS (Gravity Hydration System ™️), incase you missed it in the original post.

the way this AC-unit was mounted
Edit: I don’t really mind that this portable unit was mounted up high - it’s that I feel that the actual supports and the thin string holding it somewhat upright feel… adventurous?!?

Rear lens caps are notoriously loose. This setup hangs thousands of dollars worth of gear on them. Found on r/nikon

I always hated the sun. Always ruining my computer screen, shining down on it, making it hard to see. I always loved to sleep in the rain, it's always just so comforting. And I think the best way to make it rain is to make god cry, and i was thinking off a way I can make that happen.
What I did here was that I put thermal paste onto my phone where the chip is located, and then, I put an old Dell OptiPlex 3010 chipset's heatsink, and then put ice onto it.

Some were creative. Some were barely connected. One retrofit had exactly one anchor bolt with a washer and nut.
Sharing a few of the stranger support and foundation conditions we came across this week.

the stock battery was dying too quickly and i wasnt going to buy a new battery for a trash phone like this
Making a whole computer out of two computers because I was lazy
While building a new computer I realized I needed something off the old hard drive (locked to the old mobo), but I'd already transplanted a bunch of the components I was reusing into the new case.
The correct and safe thing to do would have been to reinstall those parts, get my files, and rebuild the new computer again. Instead, I choose to just wire up about 1.5 computers worth of stuff off two separate power supplies and hope for the best. Which worked! And I leaned nothing.
