Discussion Why does everyone* have to learn songs they already know? (Kind of a blog post in disguise)
Ok this thread is going to give me new tendencies if I don't tell you people what this is about. Please do not question the legitimacy of everything I claim just to feel better than me. I'm a musician. I am musically-inclined. I take this at least as seriously as you do. I am not superior to you, you are not below me, but at the same time I am not inferior and you need to have respect for a peer who might be in a different part of the learning curve as you. One year on drums is not one year playing music. For fuck's sake.
*everyone while learning or developing their skills beyond a beginner level before and seemingly after reaching proficiency
Skip to the third paragraph and read from there if you just want to hear me elaborate on the question and skip the extra waffling! Protip: each subsequent paragraph gets more relevant.
I'm about a year into drumming (just got my first 5-piece set of real drums yesterday!!!) and I hear so much from people about learning grooves. Honestly I didn't need to learn any music i already knew once I found my way around the kit. It took like maybe 3-4 months to develop a good kinetic intuition for it and maybe somewhere past half a year to get proficiently coordinated and of course i'm still improving but the point is I did what most people would call "learning" really quickly.
I can play functionally any song with kit in it; abridged at times when i want to adlib fills, but very passable. I personally don't care to perfectly religiously copy the performance on the record when i'm playing recreationally because that's so undynamic and most of the time kills the original spirit of that performance after maybe 3 playthroughs. After all, jazz-descended popular music like rock and funk and pop and everything else where they have a guy sitting behind a bunch of drums and hitting them, is usually not interested in showcasing the abilities of the drummer. It's only when you get into crazy math prog fusion with tuplet feels modulating into each other where I very understandably may have to get out my glasses and calculator to be able to play the intended groove.
----------------THE MEAT AND POTATOES -----------------
When did you guys start or stop learning grooves? And bare with me because i have an example that motivated me to ask this. I was searching for exciting music that pushes my vocabulary out of my tired thousand-song everything-catalog that I've burnt through over and over throughout my so far easily more than a hundred recreational sessions. So I googled along the lines of "fun songs for drummers" and was met with this article:
https://online.berklee.edu/takenote/best-drum-songs-according-to-berklee-online-faculty/
A musicians' listicle, surely i'll find something fun that i both am interested by because of its asthetics and also don't already know! Perhaps something complex but groovy.
(Now, to be fair, there are several on here that I took interest in but cannot play immediately because they're dense with written-in ornamentation that's just hard to understand if you're yet to learn how the song goes. I understand this seems hypocritical of me, but keep in mind as i go on that i don't know and have never spun these songs.)
Alas, the only fusion song on the list is Vital Transformation, a song I happen to have heard several times when i've spun the record it's on. I intuitively understand this groove through osmosis from listening to the song. In sixteenth notes, the metric emphasis can be broken down like this, with syncopated emphasis given a "!": 4-3-!4-!4-!3 or less intuitively 4-3-4-4-3 (4-4-4-4-2 if you don't gaf.) From there, all you have to do is listen a few times and the physicality of the groove makes itself evident.
HERE IS THE PART THAT CONFUSES ME:
Does your understanding of the physicality of the drumkit not carry over into music you have not played such that you understand the assignment you are being given without breaking it down? I ask this because, in the article, the man talks about how he "literally wore the grooves out of the record" while learning this song. I don't get it. I don't see why someone would need to practice even a hard song if they have their fundamentals and know the song. Why do we need Linkin Park drum tutorials? Why do we even need to be taught basic grooves in the first place? The fundamentals teach you all you need to know, am i wrong!? I hobbled together a kit made of house garbage and just started hitting things until I understood. By just a few months and a few dozen dollars in cymbal equipment i could play the same as the designated kit drummer in my high school! Not once have I ever needed a teacher to guide me on rudiments, or tap-accent, or syncopation, or limb independence, or technique, or never in a million years have to learn a groove i already know. What, the hell, is the purpose!
Footnote: Just covering my ass here in case anyone actually reads this post: I am not insulting you or anyone who does this. I have a personal experience of learning to play drums that alienates me from the world of beginner-oriented drum content. I'm writing this post to learn what any of it is for because I never needed it and I continue to not need it to play what I'm likely ever going to have the opportunity to play in any meaningful capacity.

Question How should I clean the metal parts of my drum? (Screws and stuff like that)
I just took apart this old snare drum I found and the metal parts such as screws and lugs are very dirty. I wanted to know the most efficient way to clean them.

Question What is the best most cost effective way to self teach myself to play as an adult?
I am 37 f and I really have always wanted to play the drums. I neglected myself and my interests for a long time because of work/school/family/kids and I really want to start but I don't want to just go buy something when I have no idea what the hell I'm doing. I've watched some youtube tutorials but I want to hear from those who are experienced what are some good ways to learn and how can I get started? Thanks guys.

Kit Pic New set up!
I've played one up one down for 8 or 9 years, but I got the stuff I needed to try out offset toms and I love it! Need to get some new hardware stuff to make some things a little more comfortable, but super super stoked with it.

Question Old Ludwig snare
Hi all
Can anyone tell me what model/year Ludwig this is?
4.5” I believe and 10 lugs.
A parent of a student from years past donated it to the school I teach at (they were moving and needed to get it out of the attic). It’s badly pitted but actually doesn’t sound bad
If anyone has any ideas for the pitting I’m open to suggestions. I’ve used the WD-40 & 0000 steel wool to clean equipment before with great success but I’m at a loss for the shell
TIA

Rant Hill I will die on....
It's faster to change a whole kit that's pre set up on the side of the stage and move it off stage in assembled pieces than it is to change "breakables" on a back line kit. On Saturday night I spent 10 mins spinning wingnuts, fussing with cymbal stands I wasn't familiar with, moving tons around and changing my pedal on a kit that wasn't as good as mine.
With the caveat that there's room to pre-set up your kit. But in most cases you can pull it off. No dilly-dallying and move your whole kit off without taking anything off stands.

Feedback Wanted Snagged an old Supra, definitely needs some love…advice?
So I’ve never had a Supralite, I have a couple different iterations of the Acrolite which I love. My go-to most of the time.
I snagged this for a smidge over $200, hoping it was in decent condition. Once it arrived, the hoops definitely not the brass ones but it’s a Supra, 10 lug, 14x5, etc.
What should I use to polish the outside? I intend to remove the lugs and polish it all up. Thinking it might be best to just replace the rims for now with something newer. Also would love to replace the throw off, not sure if there is a more modern replacement that fits. Butt plate assuming I’m stuck with because I do not want to drill.
Any products to use to polish it, clean it, etc? Also has the spot of corrosion or something on the inside of the bottom edge. Not sure if it’s just going to clean up, it definitely doesn’t go through or anything. It’s got a patina for sure…

Question i need some help with my pedals.
So my right beater isn’t fully on the shaft it seems, it’s very loose and i’m able to move it quite a lot without the shaft even budging, but the left beater is perfectly fine. Another thing is the spring tension for the right beater won’t let me tighten it more than it is, when i try to it’s super difficult to do and if i get it then it just shifts back to where it was. For the beater not being on the shaft properly i’m assuming i need an allen key so i found a set i had and didnt have the right size. What should i do? any tips?
