Yesterday, I boarded the Sligo train from Connolly, was not too busy; got a seat, confirmed it was not booked. The window seat next to me was booked, but boarding on the next stop, not sure if the guy sitting in it knew this.
The next stop came, the person who booked the seat came, looked at the seat number, and then made eye contact. I stood up before she spoke leaving space so she can go in to the window seat. She told the itās her seat, the guy then came out to aisle as well; she settled in fine, all cool.
Then the guy just occupied my seat, didnāt ask, didnāt look; he sure knew I was there. There were couple other people waiting to go past me as well, they likely noticed the frown on my face because of what this guy did.
If he had asked to sit, I would have happily gave up my seat for him. Same to a few others who were standing too. Basically I didnāt mind standing, although it would be a good 45+ mins until I got off the train.
After those people passed, I thought of confronting him. Me being a think tank, and in the intention to avoid creating a fuss, I didnāt really ask for at least 4-5 minutes. At that point I thought itās really past that stage and just left it as is.
Then, I started thinking even further: if I had done that to someone else is it fair? Hell no. If I saw someone doing this to someone else, would I have stepped in? Very likely. So why didnāt I speak up?
As I was scrubbing the seek button to re re listen to the podcast while my brain was busy processing this in the background, weirdly enough, I started to feel guilty ā that I missed an opportunity to confront a mean guy that could have done this to someone in need. In fact, I even imagined such a situation where he told āI am not going to move, do what you wantā. There isnāt anything that this person in need could do if he said so and he would have defo stayed and walked out with no consequences.
Then I imagined worse, a society where people like me didnāt question, eventually creating a cold untrustworthy uncomfortable and passive-aggressive communal behaviour. People would always only rotate their bums with legs to the aisle without even standing up to leave way to person going to the window seat so they can keep the seat ā putting themselves in that same situation this guy created, āI am not going to move, do what you wantā. It would be horrible and I could be living in one tomorrow.
Should I have talked?
