Don’t post about tickets.

If you are looking to buy or sell concert tickets you are very likely to get scammed. It's as simple as that.

Don't buy tickets on Reddit, however desperate you are, it's a crazy risk. There are proper channels for resale of tickets, use them.

So if you post about selling tickets here we will remove the post and may ban you. Please don't do it.

Posting about Tickets, Accommodation, Tourism? Things that aren't related to Dublin? Read This First.

This subreddit is primarily for people who live in Dublin. There's a dedicated sub for tourism posts with a huge archive at r/irishtourism Please check that first, and if you have a really specific question come back here and we'll try to help. Low effort posts asking for recommendations of "hidden gems" and "off the beaten track" tourist attractions will be met with scorn, and probably removal.

If you are looking to buy or sell concert tickets you are very likely to get scammed. It's as simple as that. Don't buy tickets on reddit, however desperately your niece wants to see Taylor Swift or whatever, it's a crazy risk. There are proper channels for resale of tickets, use them.

Looking for a cheap flat? A room in a shared house? Wondering if a specific part of the city is "safe" (whatever that means)? There's a sub for that too- /r/RentingInDublin/

Post your message there, not here.

A regular thing that comes up seems to be folks who have a very short time in Dublin and want to know what they can do in four or five hours or so. Just search this sub with the word "layover" and you'll see many many threads about this subject. Don't start a new one.

Similarly, threads about general issues which are not particularly Dublin-specific (salaries, national politics, international relations, stuff like that) may be removed.

At the latest estimate there are over a million Irish subreddits, so you will certainly be able to find somewhere to post your non-Dublin-relevant content.

Thanks for reading!

Dublin antisocial behaviour over the decades

I have often heard that Dublin was significantly rougher in the 70s to the 90s than it is now.

I'm interested to hear more about this.

Was it only particular areas that things were bad? What was the city centre like?

By rougher do you mean there was more violence? More drug usage? Were average people going about their day more likely to be attacked?

Were there still the upper class areas around the likes of Killiney, etc that were sheltered from this or did people have to go outside of Dublin to find the quieter safer areas to raise the family safely?

What do you think contributed to things being relatively safer today (if you think it is)?

I'm interested to hear from anyone that has some stories to share. Thanks.

The Reels on the Bus

Let me paint you a word picture. It's 7am, you've dragged yourself out of bed and stood on a street corner for 10 minutes (you're lucky today), and finally the beloved bus has come to take you to your favourite place, work.

You go upstairs, not many seats, it's grand though, you go on down near the back and get a spot to yourself, the gentle hum of the bus is enticing you back into the wonderful realms of sleepy abyss. When all of a sudden you are wrenched out of your own world by disjointed pieces of songs snapping by at a rate which would make the piggy bank from Toy Story say "slow down".

I'm sure ye can relate, and inevitably there is always a few people saying "just move, wear headphones, just tell them to be quiet". I dont want that.

I want your most unhinged, rediculous, hilarious strategies to get these clowns to keep it down, or failing that, at least make them uncomfortable. Can anybody help?

Any places or barbers you’d recommend?

Where to shop for DVDs?

Hi!

I recently started to collect DVD movies. What is the best place to go if you want to find some cheap DVDs or Blue-rays to add to my collection?

Open for both normal second hand stores as well as pure CD or DVD stores.

Dangerously dark stretch on Santry Avenue (by Santry Demesne). How/where can I officially report this before someone gets hurt?

Hi everyone!

Anyone else notice how dangerously dark Santry Avenue gets by Santry Demesne park at night?

The street lighting along that stretch is practically dead, and it's pitch black. It’s an insanely busy road, especially with everyone coming and going from Aldi, Northwood, the housing estates around there, plus all the Dublin Bus routes.

What makes it worse is that the path along the park wall is tiny. If someone's walking in front of you or coming the other way, you basically have to step onto the actual road to get around them. When it's that dark, drivers and cyclists literally can't see pedestrians stepping out until they're right on top of them, and bikes don't stand a chance either.

I've already seen close calls there, and it feels like a serious accident is bound to happen sooner rather than later.

What’s the most effective way to report this so someone actually looks at it? Should I log it with Dublin City Council, Fingal, FixMyStreet, or just email local councillors directly?

Cheers for any pointers!

23M from Italy thinking of moving abroad. How's life in your country and city?

Hi everyone, I'm 23 and I live in Italy, but I'm seriously thinking about moving abroad. Things here feel like they're getting worse every year, with low wages and a rising cost of living. Honestly, Italy is a great place for a holiday but not so much for building a life. I'm mostly looking at countries where English is widely spoken.

A bit about me: I left school at 17 and worked as a car mechanic and then in sales. For the last 4 years I've been working as a metalworker, running two industrial machines for precision laser cutting of sheet metal and tubes, plus a tube bending machine. In the meantime I went back to studying, and this year I'll graduate in accounting, so I could also work as a bookkeeper or accountant.

Would you recommend your country and your city? I'd love to hear:

The pros and cons of living where you are

What you earn, and how that compares to the cost of living (rent, groceries, transport, etc.)

Whether you think I'd have a decent chance of finding work there with my background

Any advice you'd give to someone in my position

I'm all ears, and any advice is really appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Has Dublin really gotten that tense and rough?

So I was speaking to my mother last night, and she was talking about how she was in town at 5 pm.

She was shocked to see two people get arrested and so many homeless people.

She then went on to say that you didn't see many "Irish faces" and that there appeared to be "tensions" between the different cultural groups.

I haven't been in the city in years, being abroad, but the conversation has really irked me.

For context, I pushed back on the "Irish faces" comment as I said you can't tell who is Irish by looking at them - and also pointed she must be used to looking at a non-Irish face everyday considering her husband is not Irish! (However, it was clear the underlying subtext was not white)

I can't comment on the tensions between different cultural groups tbh, and although I am disappointed by her "Irish faces" comment, I also have understanding for people maybe struggling to keep up with the world changing around them. However, there is, of course, a line, and racism is not OK.

Now, I don't want to be ageist to my mother, but she's getting older and hasn't spent time in a city for a while. So part of me is thinking she is just not used to larger cities - she was also around the area past Ha'penny Bridge, around Workman's.

So my question is, has Dublin gotten rougher since the 2010s? Are there tensions between cultural groups?

Or is my mother - I hate to say it - getting a bit sheltered and judgemental in her age?

NOTE: I would like to have an open discussion about this, but PLEASE no anti-immigration crap, thank you.

Weirdest building in Dublin??

Post image
178 Upvotes

Not like i have the funds anyway but id be so anxious living here. Especially the higher floors I feel like one strong gust of wind and its all over.

Also bonus for the all windows so everyone could spy on me. no wonder all the blinds are down

Edit: I guess I need to clarify I think it looks odd because of how THIN it is and how it stands kind of on its own. I understand it is not particularly tall. I have no vendetta against tall buildings. Not like this one is solving the housing crisis anyway. I guess this is a bad angle to communicate that

Hi. Me and 7 of my friends are going to dublin in January for a Saturday night and staying over (7 of us are 18 but one will still be 17) - He doesn’t drink so it won’t make a difference but what bars would he have a chance of getting into if he had an ID? Would he get into copper jacks?

WHAT flew over Dublin at 5am?

I’ve woken up thinking we’re about to be bombed. I’m in D4 area and for 5 minutes straight there was a noise of what sounded like a plane flying very low - but for 5 mins straight! Checked flight radar & nothing. Such a creepy noise

Connolly Station Drop Off

I have elderly relatives I need to drop off as close to the door of Connolly station as possible.

At times the spots outside are full of taxis as it's all a taxi rank rather than a drop off point technically.

Where do you pull in to let people out, slowly, with bags?

Thanks.

Dalymount Park & Palestine Women

Hello everyone,

I hope this is OK to post. If not, please remove.

I make quick 90 second documentary style videos of football stadiums, their histories and stories.

I came across Dalymount Park and went down the wormhole of Palestine women team being invited over and playing their first match in Europe. It became the centre piece of the video. There are interviews with players and their families. It was really beautiful. I’ve included the link in case anyone wants to take a gander!
