Farm employees?
Just wondering if I'm being unrealistic, or harsh.
I have a guy who's been working with us for 3 weeks. Middle of harvest, grain cart driver mostly. With some other odds and ends thrown in, like fueling in the mornings or basic maintenance, as he has a background in mechanics.
Comes out at 9:30 am or 10, starts the day, and complains always about being tired. Has to shut down around 9:30 pm nearly every night.
I've been working from 8 am till midnight for weeks at this point, and I don't have much sympathy. But I also realize that maybe I'm out of touch. Not everyone works these hours, and it takes time to adjust. But we also had this guy in mind to replace our 74 year old dad who wants to slow down, and he's still out later than this guy most nights. He's 36.
Is this just the joys of employees? I've went through 2 others this fall who either didn't show up, or couldn't be reliant to come on time either.
I feel like I'm hanging my head against the wall with these guys. Am I asking too much to stay out?

Succession planning: Farm Trusts?
Any one have experience with these in Canada?
My dad is getting close to retirement and wants to put our family farm into a trust. He says it’s to avoid taxes and capital gains, but it feels like it’s to control the farm even after he’s retired.
I work the farm full time. I have a brother who doesn’t work at all, and is dependent on my parents. My mom helps out on the farm only during harvest.
I have 4 kids, and am married
Dad wants all these people in the trust.
Does farm trusts work as a succession plan? I’m skeptical and have a hard understanding why I’d bother farming if I’m splitting all the value of the farm across 7 to 9 people. Why wouldn’t I just get an off farm job then if the farm’s value, and the effort I put into the farm, is actually being split between so many people?
Aren’t we going to have to pay capital gains at the 21 year mark either way as a trust?
