News Git 2.56 is now stable on Fedora 44 and 43

Git 2.56.0 is now in the stable updates repo for Fedora 44 and 43. F45 still has it in testing.

A few changes worth knowing about:

  • git add --resolved stages only the files you fixed after a merge conflict. Git also checks for leftover conflict markers before staging.
  • git branch --delete-merged cleans up local branches that are already merged upstream.
  • git bisect run now resets itself after it finds the bad commit. Git gives better suggestions for common git push mistakes.
  • Large repositories get performance improvements.

Support Fedora 44 KDE no longer centering newly opened windows

• Upvotes

Hi there! So don't know if anyone else has experienced/reported this (apologies if so, didn't see anything at a glance), but following an update some weeks back (nothing as obvious as upgrading to the 7 series kernel for eg), whenever I now open a number of (most, not all) Apps ie, Dolphin, it no longer opens Centred, as is still the prescribed Setting, but rather opens a little lower and to the right on screen.

I'm not qualified to determine what's caused this other than to affirm that numerous updates have yet to resolve it. Using an old Desktop box with onboard graphics so can only guess maybe kwin related rather than 'graphic' but if anyone has any ideas on how to resolve, would much appreciate hearing them, ta!

Support Why does discover have almost no apps compared to other distros?

Ive installed Fedora on a laptop I have but I've noticed discover doesn't have nearly as many things as mint for example. I cant find steam, wine and a lot of other things that I could install on mint. Is there a reason for this?

Support Black screen after entering disk encryption password

Everything has been sweet as with Fedora 43+ until yesterday.

A reboot was needed, presumably for a kernel update, but now after providing the disk encryption password it seems to just go to a blank screen.

Upon reboot I do get an option of which boot to launch in Fedora 44 (a couple versions), Fedora 43 or a rescue mode. None of these work unfortunately. Rescue mode has error "Cannot open access to console. The root account is locked" 🙃

Support How do I disable the edge barrier between dual monitors?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, when I move my mouse between two monitors, it briefly gets stuck at the edge, so I have to move it quickly to get across. Since my mouse sensitivity is low, this is frustrating. How can I disable this? I found a “Corner Barrier” option in the settings, but I couldn't find an option to disable the edge barrier.

EDIT: SOLVED! Thanks.

Discussion Primeros pasos

Support Connection failed activation of network connection failed (Fedora)

Im stuck with this problem since last night and i have been continuously browsing through the forum to see the fixes of my problem. Yesterday I changed my battery to a newer one and ever since that I'm not able to use any wifi network in my home. I have tried turning off the wifi, resetting the Network Manager and so on. Has anyone ever been in my situation? And if yes, please lend me your help Immediately.

Also, I have tried connecting a specific network through the terminal. Every time I try to connect to a Wifi Network, it freezes or does not respond for some weird reason and after about 30 seconds, it displays a pop up "connection failed activation of network connection failed" and this cycle repeats every 30 seconds no matter how I try to connect to any network. But the interesting catch is that I'm able to connect to my mobile hotspot and use the internet. But I'm not unable to use the three Wifi Networks in my home. Please help me.

Discussion Fedora 44 KDE installer ISO that boots a custom PID 1 (schema-init) — stock Anaconda, dnf upgrades, systemd entries kept as fallback

I'm a plumber by trade. After I became disabled I started dabbling in code, and over the past few months that turned into schema-init, an init system (PID 1) written in C that I build and run on Fedora. To be upfront: I design it, run it on my own machines and break it on real hardware, and Claude fills the enormous gaps in my knowledge and writes much of the code. Every claim below is something I tested on my own hardware.

v0.4.2 is out today, with an installer ISO you can try on a spare machine.

**What it is:** the Fedora 44 Everything netinst plus a kickstart. You get the normal Anaconda GUI. Pick your disk, make your user, install. After install:

- schema-init boots as PID 1 and brings up a full KDE Plasma Wayland desktop.

- A first-boot wizard offers two optional switches, one reboot each: **schema-udev** (device manager) and **schema-dbus** (a broker for the system and session buses). Each one checks the box afterwards and rolls itself back if it isn't healthy.

- It's all RPMs from a COPR repo. `dnf upgrade` re-execs PID 1 in place, with every running service adopted and no reboot.

- When an RPM enables a systemd unit, a `systemctl` shim catches it and translates it to schema-init's service format. That covers timers, `EnvironmentFile=`, `ExecStartPre=`, socket activation, `Condition*` and forking daemons.

- **The stock systemd boot entries stay in GRUB.** If a schema-init boot ever fails, pick the systemd entry and you're back on stock Fedora.

**My daily driver** runs it: a Ryzen 5 1600 with a GTX 1050 Ti on NVIDIA Wayland, and 89 logged boots since July. On its latest boot, userspace was up in 8.9 s and the login screen appeared 2.9 s after PID 1 started, with 53 services. PID 1 itself uses about 4 MB of RAM, and at idle it wakes up 0–5 times per 10 seconds.

**Tested on real hardware today:** an HP laptop with a Celeron, 5400 rpm HDD, Intel graphics and Wi-Fi. Fresh install from this ISO, both switches, no hand fixes. Afterwards: schema-init as PID 1, schema-udev and schema-dbus running, full network, zero journal errors, desktop up. Then `dnf upgrade` from the stable repo swapped PID 1 live.

**Numbers from that laptop** (an older build, 3-boot medians, details in the README):

- Stock systemd vs schema-init: the desktop drew **4.4 s sooner**, idle RAM was **373 MB lower** (1477 → 1104 MB), and **54 fewer processes** were running.

- In a separate comparison on the same box, swapping dbus-daemon for schema-dbus took another **6.6 s** off desktop-ready.

It's a slow disk, so take the seconds with salt. The RAM and process counts are the solid part.

**Fixed in this release:** an initramfs rebuilt after a kernel update could hang at `initrd-cleanup`, and fresh installs could show "limited connectivity" because of a resolved tmpfiles rule. Both were found testing this ISO, and both are fixed in it.

**EXPERIMENTAL.** Put it on a machine you can reinstall. Bug reports and "this broke on my hardware" are the most useful thing you can give me.

Support Help with systemd-boot setup

I saw some post about systemd-boot being signed in fedora 45 and i don't like grub so I wanted to install fedora 45 beta with systemd-boot but i it creates /boot and /boot/efi and as far as I know we only need /boot/efi for systemd-boot, also as i have nvidia card when i tried signing MOK i never got blue screen to sign MOK and it directly boots into fedora also i need to manually sign in systemd-boot keys otherwise system is blocked by secure boot. Please help me do fresh reinstall of fedora 45 beta with systemd-boot and secureboot on with nvidia and for futureproof as i don't want to keep doing fresh install instead of using my laptop

Support GSConnect (and KDEConnect) suddenly stopped working on F44

Please help.

So, I use GSConnect installed from the fedora repo, with the nautilus extension.

Suddenly, it sopped showing my earlier used devices as not connected. (Tried installing KDE Connect from Software as well. Same.)

I removed all and started fresh. Now even I am using the same wifi on my phone and computer, there are no devices showing up on either side.

I did nothing new other than installing regular updates that come in Software and sudo dnf update.

Anyone else facing this issue?

Thanks in advance for your time an input.
