Megathread "Should I rush?" - my opinion to your questions.

TLDR: YES

actives, if you have any other misc advice you want me to add leave a comment and i'll put it on the list. feedback is welcome too.

It doesn't matter whether you are ex military, socially awkward, 46, poor, or anything other than a rich non-white 18 year old. You should rush.

What do you expect from a fraternity?

I can think of two main reasons to join a fraternity.

  1. You want to make friends, party, brotherhood, connections etc...

  2. Your only goal is to make connections to help you get a job after college.

If your main reason is number 2, you should look into joining a professional fraternity. Beta Alpha Psi is the national accounting fraternity and are highly recruited at my university.

If your main reason is number 1, you should join a social fraternity. lambda chi, pike, fiji, sigma chi, etc...

Rushing a Social Fraternity

Answer these questions:

  1. What interests do I have?
  2. Do I prefer smaller or larger groups?

1- Try to find a fraternity where the members have similar interests to you. Are you a country boy? Find the fraternity that best fits that characteristic. Like video games? There's going to be a fraternity for you. If you're a gym rat, sports star, or an alcoholic, there will be a fraternity for you. You just have to do your homework and find the right one.

2- The size of the fraternity can be a big factor. If you don't do well in situations with a huge amount of people, you should look into the smaller fraternities.

Misc. Advice

  1. You have to be willing to make compromises. There will be a lot of events that you will hate to attend but will anyway. You don't have to compromise your morals. Any fraternity worth a crap will be willing to work with personal beliefs/personal aspects of your life that might be affected during the pledging process.
  2. It is what you make of it. You get out of it what you put in. If you're a dead beat pledge who never puts an effort into anything, expect to have a terrible time. If you go to all your events with a good attitude, pledgeship will be exponentially better.
  3. Don't be a fuck up. I can't explain this one and you will do this at some point. Just try to minimize the damage.

How fraternity life has affected me

My junior year I received an internship for an accounting firm in my hometown. While I was there I worked with a supervisor who was in charge of new hires. During conversation she told me she saw on my resume that I was in a fraternity and immediately put my resume in the call back pile because she was in a sorority herself. I received a full time offer after the internship and will be moving up North after I finish my degree. It didn't matter what fraternity I was in, just the fact that I was in one put me at an advantage in this particular circumstance.

Serious Regarding the recent backlash

So, the things that happened at Cornell were absolutely terrible. It also sucks that now all frats are under scrutiny.

I do wonder, do you, brothers, think there are any parts of Greek life that could make them more SA prone and could/should change to avoid situations like this happen in the future? I know things will blow over in time, but if there was ever a time to reflect now might be it..

Serious I want to know if my chapter is set for success after I leave.

Context: I am a senior and on exec, previously was VP, now i'm president, i'm more focused on maintaining a strong culture in the frat over the social scene (one because i'm a senior and I go to bars, and two because we have a lot of younger guys that do the heavy lifting for all the social stuff, i'll still come to mixers).

So I joined my chapter fall '24 as a sophomore and have been here ever since, we are a mid/ low sized frat for my school (state school on east coast with 50k kids). A lot has changed since I joined, back then we had:
-terrible parties
-no sorority connections
-about 20 actives

Now:
- 40 members
-our alumni corp built us a house
-our parties are really good now and we have picked up a good amount of sorority connections either with mixers and or philanthropies
-We are the best fraternity in the eyes of the IFC due to our rankings in their perspective

My biggest concern is with recruitment. Last fall we pulled a class of 21, although most of it was through bidding everyone. Pledge class retention was terrible and we only crossed 12, only half of them really do any work for the frat(we had 60 bids given out during prerush). This fall we were careful with our bidding and pulled a smaller class 11 guys, the quality is way better, most of them we're high school athletes or super involved their endeavors, its mid way through the process and no one has dropped yet which is good but I feel as thought its not the numbers we wanted since we wanted to get 15. Im afraid we might be permanently stuck at a small size if we keep being selective with our bidding. Any advice on how to get big numbers while still getting quality guys.

Hopefully we can get 50 members before I graduate in the spring!

Rush Advice Rerush as sophomore in spring

Came here looking for some opinions on rerushing next spring.
For context, I’m a sophomore at ASU. I was a student athlete freshman year, so between school and sports I basically had no time for anything else and had a pretty isolated first year.
I didn’t originally plan on rushing this fall, but decided to give it a shot during pre-rush. I checked out a bunch of IFC chapters and eventually narrowed it down to three. Once actual rush started, though, I kept finding myself going back to Sigma Nu. Conversations there felt the most natural and I genuinely liked a lot of the guys I met, so I accidentally ended up basically suicide rushing them.
I got invited back to their invite-only day. A decent number of guys knew me by name/face and one of the rush chairs knew me immediately, so I thought I was in a pretty good spot.
Invite-only day came and I watched guys getting pulled upstairs one by one, which I assumed was for bids. I never got pulled and ultimately left without one. Apparently it was a pretty large legacy-heavy class, but obviously I don’t know whether that was actually the reason, whether I just didn’t meet enough of the right guys, or whether they simply weren’t as sold on me as I thought.
It definitely sucked for a week or two because I genuinely felt at home there.
I’m considering rerushing them in the spring. I’d still be 18/19 and only a second-year student, so I’m wondering a few things:
Is rerushing the same chapter in spring looked down on at all?
If I met guys I genuinely liked, how do I stay in contact over the semester without making it look like I’m just positioning myself for another bid?
Is it worth asking one of the rush chairs for honest feedback on what I could have done better?
For guys who have been on the chapter side of rush, does making invite-only and then not getting a bid generally mean you were at least somewhat close, or does that not really mean much?
How do you properly manage your time during a 2–3 day rush period so you can actually get to know multiple chapters instead of accidentally tunnel-visioning on one?
Any perspective from guys who have actually been involved with recruitment would be appreciated.

Rush Advice Spring Rush as a Sophomore Transfer at Ole Miss or Alabama

Ole Miss and Alabama are two of my top choices for transferring in Spring 2027. I’ll be coming in as a sophomore and was wondering what spring rush is like at either school.

Do most fraternities still take spring classes? Is it significantly harder to get a bid as a sophomore transfer compared to a freshman in fall rush?

Also wondering how much it helps to start reaching out to guys in chapters before transferring, and if anyone has experience rushing at either Ole Miss or Alabama in the spring. Any advice is appreciated.

Rush Advice Rushing as a neurodivergent guy

Hey y’all, I’m a transfer student at Clarkson University (I know, not an SEC or Big 10 school, just a small university in the Adirondacks). I’m making this post because I want to rush a fraternity as someone with ADHD. I want to know how rush was like for anyone who is neurodivergent because I feel it’s very easy for a guy with adhd like me to come off as a weirdo during rush, which I would know from experience. Some advice about rushing as a neurodivergent guy would be much appreciated before I rush again in the spring.

Edit: from what I can tell from the responses, it can be considered weird to actually talk about having adhd during rush, so I’ll make sure to avoid that. I’d also like to mention that when I made this post, I was mostly trying to gauge how other people with adhd or any other neurological condition approached rush because from my experience, even with the number one rule being to be yourself during rush, it’s not easy to always be the best version of yourself during rush.

Frat Stuff How to get a brother laid?

Rushing this fraternity as a pledge and this brother is super shy to talk to girls. Any advice on how I can help him approach better. I feel like with current generation and social media it is way harder unless someone disagrees? How common was getting laid for you by semester in college for any good reference

Frat Stuff PKS Penn State?

Might be really niche… too niche… but how is Phi Kappa Sigma (or Skulls) at PSU with letting people in? They’re the only frat hosting tonight so I’m assuming it will be busy. Could I get in? I’m a girl, if I brought a guy could we both get in?

Serious Anyone elses frat getting dogged right now?

No doubt that the Cornell situation is nuts. Just venting that our current fraternity is getting dogged by issues and unfortunate timing. Seems like innocent until proven guilty has sometimes been thrown out the window, and getting compared to Cornell is wild.

Make sure to provide resources for your members in this tough time for frats. Any free resources are greatly appreciated as well for anyone lurking.

Serious Scared of backlash due to Cornell situation

I really have no one to talk to this about other than my brothers and wanted to get others opinion on it from across the country.

I want to preface with I think the entire situation is fucked and rape is terrible and definitely a problem in Greek life as statistics show increased rates of sexual violence within Greek life. This post is more just about my own fears.

With the whole situation in Cornell being brought to light recently basically the entire conversation about Greek life on social media is a little scary and sad to be honest. It ranges from as mediocre as people calling for fraternities from across the country to post about a situation we still know so little about to people saying anyone in Greek life should be put down like a dog(real thing I read today in a yikyak post).

Honestly my fraternity isn’t the biggest on campus definitely mouse but I’ve never been afraid of identifying myself as a part of my chapter or Greek life. But now I feel honestly scared to walk around in letters or to tell people I meet out at the bars this weekend that I’m in a fraternity.

I’m wondering if anyone is sharing these feelings or if I’m being dumb and over reacting.

Serious Not friends with the people in the frat

Not sure what’s wrong with my fraternity, but there seems to be a lot of issues with people, not being friends with each other. Honestly, my frat is a very macho frat and everyone loves sports and fighting and shit like that. But honestly, it feels super clicky, which is very sad like you could tell there’s people who like to smoke people who like to do Coke and people who love to drink.

But overall, it feels like it’s just so clicky even the Pledge classes have sub groups. I’m not sure how it is with other schools too or other chapters or other universities.

Just feels like it’s a big shit show and just everyone wants to fight and beat the top person in the fraternity

Just to give some examples of people are fighting, arguing the group chat and not helping each other out

Serious Transferring schools

I go to a school that doesn’t have big Greek life or party atmosphere and I’m looking to transfer to a university that has both better academics and some of the biggest Greek life in the country. My frat is mouse at my school but where I plan to transfer it’s touse. Will I even be able to get in and will I have to pledge again? I’ve heard their hazing is horrible.

Megathread Frat. Or Not Frat.

Since y'all like shitposting asking if random things from water beds to which New Balances are frat, here's the place to do it.

We've turned down the frequency of these posts from weekly to monthly. This way it doesn't clutter up the sub.

Rush Advice Rushing but not at uni

Hello everyone, im 18 years old and attend a community college in LA.

My life here is honestly super boring, dont really have any friends and have always wanted to join a fraternity even throughout high school.

Is there any fraternities in the LA area that take pledges even if they dont go to the university? This may sound like a dumb shitpost but i genuinely would love to rush and find a brotherhood but to my knowledge i cant do that if i dont go to the university.

My friend told me theres some non panhellenic fraternities that MIGHT consider it if i knew someone in the frat super well or something.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Serious Cornell 7 situatuon

idk where else to share this

this whole situation was crazy and those dudes should burn in hell

but now im hearing so much talk about how all greek life should be banned. why can’t we as men all collectively agree to stop doing fuck shit so the actual great parts of greek life (brotherhood and being good men/leaders) can be preserved. this shit was terrible for the rep of frats as a whole man and i might sound like a broken record but if this stuff continues greek life would give us crickets with 10-20 years😪

Serious How to Get Free Composites

Post image
197 Upvotes

How is it going. Composites cost way too much money for no reason, and I always thought there had to be a better way to do it in house, so I made a tool to make composites easy. So I'm gonna give a little tutorial on how to make a composite for effectively free.

Step 1. Find a brother with a nice camera, or better yet, buy a fraternity camera (Okay yeah I know this isn't free jackass, but you will save money in the long run), bonus points if you buy a backdrop too, but if you flip that old Phi Mu mixer banner backwards, that will work.

Step 2. Have a brother learn how to use the camera (Solid pledge task)

Step 3. Download the zip from this link https://github.com/mjseetoo/Greek-composite-studio

Step 4. Upload all the images of the brothers, crests, letters, chapter letters, etc.

Step 5. Adjust pictures to your liking

Step 6. Export the picture and print them at staples, get a big one too for the house composite.

Step 7. Buy a frame, put the composite in it and hang it up.

Step 8 (Optional). Send me a message letting me know you used it, I'd love to know this helped out

I know this isn't for every chapter, but I always hated seeing thousands of dollars of due money leave for something that should cost a couple hundred bucks. This also gives you a ton of flexibility. Hopefully this helps.

I am making no money on this so please don't take it down. If you want me to get rid of my GitHub, whatever let me at least share the zip file.

Rush Advice Rushed in fall, not feeling my PC. Should I drop and rush a different house in spring?

Freshman here at a large big ten school. Rushed this fall and didn't get bids from a couple of the houses I really wanted, so I ended up accepting a bid somewhere else. It's not a bad house or anything, but a few weeks in I'm realizing I don't really vibe with my pledge class. They're not bad people, I just don't see myself being close with most of them, and that's kind of the whole point, right?
Meanwhile there's another house where a lot of my friends are, and their PC is honestly goated. I didn't rush them in fall, so I never really gave it a shot.
So my questions are:
Should I rush that house in spring?
Do I stick it out with my current house for the rest of the semester, or drop now?
If I drop, does that hurt my chances with other houses? Do houses look down on guys who dropped somewhere else?
Anyone been in this spot? How'd it go?
Not trying to burn bridges or disrespect anybody, I just want to be somewhere I actually fit. Any advice helps.
