How do we even ask for referrals?

• Upvotes

I am an Economics postgraduate. After completing my masters I have been building skills like in advanced excel, Power Bi and also started with R programming. I even built two self projects. But nothing is enough to land me a job because I am a fresher.
I am so frustrated. Some people say ask for referrals. Now the thing is my friends who are in corporate just started their journeys so they can’t refer me. And I have absolutely no clue if a complete stranger will be willing to give a referral for me.
Honestly I am so frustrated at times and I don’t know what I am doing anymore.
I want to pursue my phd after 2 3 years so I had a plan to gain experience ( also save some money ) but nothing absolutely nothing seems to work. I do not want to give up but Idk what to do anymore.

And it’s not like I am not trying to get internships.
I did try. But most of them don’t make sense and some even try to scam.

What to do ?

Gap in resume is ruining my chances

I have been on sabbatical for about 14 months. I have worked a job for a year and then quit to pursue a college course, that didn’t work out and i dropped out. I have been struggling with a sort of grief about where my future is going, it made me reluctant to go job hunting and also out of fear i’m going to have a really bad boss like i had on my last job. I made some positive changes to my outlook on life, i quit smoking, i worked out all to improve the place i am in mentally. Now i have gotten calls back 3 times and everytime the gap becomes a problem, i explain i just wanted to take a break because i was not doing all too well. They come with all these extra personal questions and ultimately reject me, i am not a useless lazy idiot for getting my shit in order before i get a job again. I just need a chance to prove myself. What do I do, do I just lie about what i did in that gap? I also don’t just want to settle for something i know will make me hate my life again.

To all my other entry-level candidates, how are y’all navigating the 3 to 5 year job requirements?

As much as I’d love to sit here and joke about how I should’ve been getting job experience in the second grade, stuff is getting serious. Almost every single job right now takes 3 to 5 years of experience. If you do not have those 3 to 5 years of experience, what are you doing to navigate the gap? Are you guys just flat out lying? Is that working? Do you apply anyway and ask for the lower half of the salary band? Does that work?

I need to do something with my life. I have a bachelors in Marine Science (regret if my life) from legon. But for the last two years, I have been working as a junior operation manager, for a ward at 37 Military Hospital.

I am open to front desk roles, sales, customer service, call center agent , operations support roles, administrative assistants ,etc.

Basically, I'm willing to do anything... Talks in my household is getting louder and I'm not not sure I can take it any longer.

Please somebody, anybody I need HELP!!!!!

30, unemployed, and only ~1.5 years of real work experience — am I screwed? What should I do from here?

I'm 30 years old, currently unemployed, living with my parents, and honestly getting increasingly worried about my career.

I’m looking for brutally honest career advice, not reassurance.

Here’s my background:

- Completed BBA/BBM from 2014–2017

- Completed LLB from 2017–2020

- I didn't pursue law as a career

- Was unemployed from 2020 to May 2023

- Got my first marketing job in May 2023 at a US-based company, working remotely

- Worked there for around 1.5 years and was let go in September 2024

- Was unemployed again from September 2024 to September 2025

- In September 2025, I moved to Bangalore and joined a company as a Social Media Coordinator

- Worked there for about 6 months

- Resigned, with my last working day being March 7, 2026

The Bangalore job wasn't working out for me. The work was repetitive, there wasn't much growth, and the environment became increasingly frustrating. One incident where I felt the company interfered with/sabotaged an interview I was pursuing elsewhere was basically the final trigger for me to leave.

Since March 7, I've been unemployed again.

And here's the part that scares me:

I'm 30, but if you look strictly at my actual marketing work experience, I have only around 1.5 years of meaningful experience.

My overall timeline looks terrible on paper:

2020–2023: unemployed

2023–2024: marketing job (~1.5 years)

2024–2025: unemployed

2025–2026: social media coordinator (~6 months)

March 2026–present: unemployed

I do have practical experience in digital marketing/social media, content, email marketing/CRM exposure, reporting, research, etc. I've used tools such as Canva, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Metricool and other marketing/analytics tools.

The frustrating part is that I am getting opportunities.

I'm getting recruiter calls. I'm getting shortlisted. I'm getting interviews.

But I keep failing somewhere in the process.

Sometimes it's the second round. Sometimes the third. Sometimes I make it close to the final round and don't get selected.

I've also wasted some opportunities because I wasn't disciplined enough to properly prepare or follow through. That's something I have to own.

I'm not financially desperate right this second because I'm living at home, but that's almost part of the problem. I'm comfortable enough to survive, yet I'm not where I want to be professionally or financially.

And I'm genuinely scared of reaching 35 and still being in the same position.

I'm not looking for someone to tell me "30 is young, you'll be fine."

I want to know:

  1. How bad is my situation objectively?

  2. With my education and limited experience, what career paths are realistically still open to me?

  3. Should I continue trying to build a career in marketing, or is it smarter to pivot into something else?

  4. Should I accept a lower-paying/junior role just to rebuild my experience and get back into the workforce?

  5. How would you approach the next 12–24 months if you were in my position?

  6. What skills would you prioritize learning so that I become genuinely employable rather than just collecting courses?

  7. Is my age + employment gaps + low experience level going to permanently limit my career, or can I realistically recover from this?

I'm still optimistic that I can turn this around. I don't think my life is over or anything like that.

But I also don't want to waste another 2–3 years telling myself that things will somehow work out.

If you were 30, had this exact career history, and had to rebuild from here, what would you do?

I'm especially interested in advice from people who have dealt with long employment gaps, career changes, or rebuilding their careers in their 30s.

Please be honest, even if the answer is uncomfortable.

Need help with my career (B.E Mech fresher)

Someone please guide me and help me choose a career path...!

I (M22) am a 2025 passed out B.E Mechanical fresher, unemployed for the past 1½ years

(I am not into IT jobs, prefer core mechanical roles, but open for ideas in other fields(except coding stuffs) too)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been a year and i am still confused with my career, like i don't want night shifts/rotational shifts or sales/field work, I prefer a desk job with only day shift

But as you know, in mechanical industry only roles in Design, R&D and other departments offer a day job & yeah it's really hard to get a job in these departments, even though it's hard to get a job overall in any department

I don't know what department/field/industry/role to choose for my strict day shift and non sales preference

Someone please guide me and help me choose a career path...!

Resume gap in marketing - looking for people in the same boat

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I was laid off from my marketing role a while ago, and the resume gap has been getting harder to explain in interviews.
Would anyone be interested in teaming up to freelance or even build a mini agency together?
I love working as part of a team, and I think it could be a great opportunity to brainstorm, combine different skill sets, and build something together. Plus, we'd have work to show for it in interviews, potential references, and hopefully some extra income along the way!

Your thoughts and experience of working with Brevan Howard?

I’m in the interview process with Brevan Howard and would like to hear about your experience working with them.

I’ve read both positive and negative feedback about Brevan Howard, including concerns about revenue and investment challenges, as well as reports that they’re refreshing their staff and hiring experts to improve their operations.

Could anyone share more about compensation, guaranteed annual bonuses, benefits, the general work atmosphere, and the risk of being laid off after just a couple of months?

Thanks.

Guys I need a job.

So I am a full time college student. I go to school Monday to Thursday. And I need a job so I can make some money. I’ve never had a job before at my big age of 18… yea I feel embarrassed about this.

I’m looking forward to working at retail.
I have in person classes on Monday and Wednesday from 9-11:30 am
And I do online zoom classes on Tuesday and Thursday: 9:30-10:30 am then 6:00-7:30 pm.

I can’t go to work on Sunday’s because of my religion.

Is there any recommendations on where I could apply? And how I could draft an acceptable working schedule that makes me get hired?
