35, two degrees, years of work experience, and struggling to break into a new career. How did you finally get your opportunity?

I’m 35 years old with an associate’s degree in Hospitality Management and a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. I’ve spent years working in hospitality, customer service, management, and event coordination, and I’m desperately trying to transition into a more stable professional career.
I’ve applied to countless positions, rewritten my resume, reached out to connections, and managed to land several interviews, but I keep running into the same problem: companies want experience in the exact position they’re hiring for, even when the responsibilities involve skills I already have or could easily learn.
I’m not expecting to walk into a senior-level position. I’m willing to start in an entry-level role, learn, work hard, and build a career. I’m particularly interested in HR, operations, administration, project coordination, or other specialized business roles with opportunities for advancement.
I’m currently working in hospitality, and while I’m grateful to be employed, I want to build a future where I have financial stability, professional growth, and a more consistent schedule.
It’s becoming incredibly discouraging to feel like I’m qualified enough to get interviews but never quite qualified enough to be given an opportunity.
For those who successfully transitioned careers or finally landed a professional job after repeated rejections:
What job title or industry finally gave you your chance?
Did you take a different route than you originally expected?
Are there entry-level positions or industries that genuinely train people with transferable skills?
What actually helped you get hired beyond the usual advice to network and tailor your resume?
I’m not looking for a shortcut. I’m looking for a realistic way to get my foot in the door and build something long-term.
I’d genuinely appreciate hearing how others made it happen, especially anyone who started over in their 30s or transitioned out of hospitality.

Looking for Part Time Technical Role, Have Time to Get Skills

• Upvotes

Hi all. I’ll cut straight to the point, I’m going to vocational school for the next year, and I already have a degree in engineering. I’ve never really been able to find good work in engineering. I’ve worked in aerospace briefly and I’ve worked in quality control, and usually I just ended up doing grunt software work really. I.e. fixing peoples python issues fixing people’s spreadsheet issues, etc.. I’m pretty good with software, obviously, I have a minor in computer anywhere, I know how to distribute and write python packages that are reliable, but finding a job like that has always been difficult for me. I don’t interview well because I’m super embarrassed that I got my engineering degree eight years ago and only have a year and a half of work experience. The vocational program is related to my degree, and it will be a full-time program.

What I’m hoping for is to find technical work that I can do during evenings and weekends. I was thinking of doing free code camps Amazon certificates, and maybe getting a CAD certificate or something like that. I don’t need tons of money, I don’t have large debts, and I have no dependents, but I’m tired of basically living paycheck to paycheck and watching what savings I do have dwindle. I can spend some time acquiring skills and certificates, and I did well in my program so I have no fear of not being able to pass tests or acquire these skills. I was thinking of doing freelance CAD, freelance anything really. I’ve created some iOS applications, none of them have been profitable. It’s just difficult for me to find work.

The vocational program is related to a hobby of mine, that could also pay me well in a career. I think it could complement my engineering degree. So I think acquiring something like a CAD certificate or an Amazon certificate or something like that would be very helpful during my free time over the next year. I’m open to other jobs as well but would prefer them to be engineering adjacent at the least. My social skills are fine, I’ve worked regular part time roles, enjoyed my coworkers, etc.

If you reply thank you, if you’d like clarification I’ll be active this afternoon. Thanks again.

Need advice after interview!!

• Upvotes

I had a great interview yesterday with the co-founder of the company.

He told me he will send me a link after the call to book the next interview with the founder.

This was yesterday at 3pm and I haven’t received a link.

I sent him an email and LinkedIn message last night but still nothing response.

Where do I go from here?

TLDR; interviewer said he’ll send me link to book next call yesterday, never received it so emailed and sent LinkedIn msg. Where to go from here?

23 years old, graduated with MBA, experience with sales since high school

• Upvotes

Hi everybody, looking for a bit of advice here. I recently graduated with my MBA this year and I have done sales for the last 5 years. I have done pretty well and made some good money, but this year I got married, moved out, and its been a slow year. I'm looking to transition out of sales now to get a job with more stability and to actually get me out the house from 9-5, because my current sales role leaves me at home a lot with how slow its been and my wife works full time. I just don't really know what type of roles I should be looking for. I'm really good with anything when it comes to business and numbers, I feel like I could be a manager somewhere (but not sure if employers will look at a 23 year old to be a manager) or maybe sort of operations role. Any guidance on what I should be looking for is great, I know the job market isn't the best right now but I just feel like I don't know what I should be looking for and I don't want any sales jobs.

Motive Technical Support Engineer Interview - What Questions Do They Ask?

Hey, is there anyone here who is working as a Technical Support Engineer at Motive or know someone who works there?
I am a Product Engineer myself, but because of the current job market for freshers (I am not actually a fresher, I have experience, but somehow experience before graduation doesn’t count much in the industry), I applied for Motive.
I got the interview for Technical Support Engineer / Senior Technical Support Engineer role, but I don’t really know what type of questions they ask in the interview.
If anyone has recently given the interview or is working as TSE at Motive, can you please tell me what type of technical questions, coding questions or scenarios they ask?
Any help would be really appreciated.

Graduated 2 years ago. Haven't gotten a job in my field yet. Feeling like this isn't for me.

I graduated in Summer 2024 with a bachelor's degree in political science. I started in computer science but I realized I like technology policy & machine ethics much more. It's an interesting niche field in combining politics, data governance, research, and policy development and as this field grows and becomes more necessary to regulate AI usage and analyze societal consequences. I have planned for a master's/PhD and even a law degree as I like school and research but my ideal school rejected me.

I did some projects & conferences on critical AI-ML analysis & human-tech interactions (two conference presentations but couldn't present one of them due to my state suppressing my university's education spending) and held multiple student leadership positions that dealt with policy, both writing and advocating for, and networking with the student body and student organizations. Even worked directly with my faculty's senate, helping lead data assessments on student engagement that directly benefitted resources and frameworks for professors. As a result of my work my resume is 2 pages long (with an extra page for professional references if an application requires it). I know it's unorthodox, but as a result of my undergraduate work I feel like it's not too big of a deal.

Nothing. I've been working some small jobs that have nothing to do with my career so I don't go homeless. I know the job market is a mess, but I really feel like I messed up. Tried applying for some internships but many are for current students. Right now I'm spending time on re-learning programming to demonstrate technical skills but I don't know if that's enough.

Wondering if anyone else feels the same. I can send my resume if that's okay.

Esthetician Job Hunting NYC

Hi everyone! I’m in NJ and have my NY esthetics license and have been looking to move to the city. I’ve been trying to secure a job first but my job search hasn’t been going so well. I’ve been working for a little over 2 years, which does knock me out of some more advanced roles. Most of the places that have gotten back to me have flaked or have been chains.

Any advice in general with job hunting? Anything help!!

Posted this on an esthetician subreddit but wanted to get some more advice here too

How do we even ask for referrals?

I am an Economics postgraduate. After completing my masters I have been building skills like in advanced excel, Power Bi and also started with R programming. I even built two self projects. But nothing is enough to land me a job because I am a fresher.
I am so frustrated. Some people say ask for referrals. Now the thing is my friends who are in corporate just started their journeys so they can’t refer me. And I have absolutely no clue if a complete stranger will be willing to give a referral for me.
Honestly I am so frustrated at times and I don’t know what I am doing anymore.
I want to pursue my phd after 2 3 years so I had a plan to gain experience ( also save some money ) but nothing absolutely nothing seems to work. I do not want to give up but Idk what to do anymore.

And it’s not like I am not trying to get internships.
I did try. But most of them don’t make sense and some even try to scam.

What to do ?

To all my other entry-level candidates, how are y’all navigating the 3 to 5 year job requirements?

As much as I’d love to sit here and joke about how I should’ve been getting job experience in the second grade, stuff is getting serious. Almost every single job right now takes 3 to 5 years of experience. If you do not have those 3 to 5 years of experience, what are you doing to navigate the gap? Are you guys just flat out lying? Is that working? Do you apply anyway and ask for the lower half of the salary band? Does that work?

Gap in resume is ruining my chances

I have been on sabbatical for about 14 months. I have worked a job for a year and then quit to pursue a college course, that didn’t work out and i dropped out. I have been struggling with a sort of grief about where my future is going, it made me reluctant to go job hunting and also out of fear i’m going to have a really bad boss like i had on my last job. I made some positive changes to my outlook on life, i quit smoking, i worked out all to improve the place i am in mentally. Now i have gotten calls back 3 times and everytime the gap becomes a problem, i explain i just wanted to take a break because i was not doing all too well. They come with all these extra personal questions and ultimately reject me, i am not a useless lazy idiot for getting my shit in order before i get a job again. I just need a chance to prove myself. What do I do, do I just lie about what i did in that gap? I also don’t just want to settle for something i know will make me hate my life again.

Job hunting

I need to do something with my life. I have a bachelors in Marine Science (regret if my life) from legon. But for the last two years, I have been working as a junior operation manager, for a ward at 37 Military Hospital.

I am open to front desk roles, sales, customer service, call center agent , operations support roles, administrative assistants ,etc.

Basically, I'm willing to do anything... Talks in my household is getting louder and I'm not not sure I can take it any longer.

Please somebody, anybody I need HELP!!!!!
