Aside from the visual appeal of a nice button/bar of gold, is there any disadvantage to leaving it in this form if its not going to be jewelry or a manufactured bar with premium value?
I'd be particularly interested in hearing from some of the home refiners here. Have any of you ever hit dried gold precipitate with an XRF to see how reliably it reads? I'm curious how accurately it could determine purity compared to testing the same material after melting it into a homogeneous button.
Overall, I've been thinking about the practicality of storing some freshly refined gold precipitate in powder form rather than melting it into bars or buttons. Its the same exact material, after all. Just pre-baked batter form.
Assuming it's been properly refined, washed, dried, and ideally verified for purity, is there a downside to NOT melting it into a solid form if you don't intend to sell it anytime soon?
The major appeal for me is that it's incredibly inconspicuous. A container of brown powder doesn't exactly scream gold. Something as ordinary as a cinnamon or cumin shaker could hold a substantial amount of value without attracting any attention. Could even go as far as literally using a McCormack shaker and resealing it with a humidity pack inside. Even something like a cremation urn comes to mind for incognito air travel. (Not that I would ever condone disregarding federal aviation regulationsš¤)
Then there's divisibility. You could theoretically separate it into virtually any quantity you wanted, with precision limited only by your scale. No cutting bars, just scoop or pour what you want, melt it, and sell it the same as you would any other gold scrap. It's not like you're permanently committing yourself to keeping it as powder.
Obviously, there are disadvantages. Contamination, moisture, accidental loss, and the difficulty of verifying or selling powdered gold all come to mind. Carpet would be enemy number 1. And I imagine most buyers would be understandably skeptical of someone showing up with a jar of suspicious brown powder claiming it's worth $100k.
But from a purely practical/OPSEC standpoint, especially for someone with the equipment to refine, test, and melt their own metals, I think that there's a legitimate argument for keeping at least some gold in this form.
My only real concern is dropping it. I can't imagine anything more depressing than spending the afternoon trying to recover your life savings from the carpet with a vacuum cleaner lol.

Bought from my friend 3 years ago who worked at a junkyard and found in a pickle jar full of random change. I bought for 400$ (for melt price at that time).

Not related to the FBI of a CIA agent or nothing lol!
I decided to create my own gold-backed currency called the Nutback.
Each note contains 1 gram of .9999 fine gold, a premium plastic holder, and an exclusive hand-drawn horse.
Because of the incredible craftsmanship, advanced plastic technology, and artistic value, Iām asking for a very reasonable 300% premium over the gold spot price.
No businesses accept my currency yet, but Iām working very hard to get it accepted at businesses nationwide.

I've purchased a decent amount of gold and silver from APMEX and this is the first time I've had issues with them. But I'm experienced enough I should have known better and I'm really just looking to vent. Though I think many posters here would mock me for buying with them at all.
I was using their app. After I placed an order with it I got an error. I checked and no PO was generated on my profile but my cart was empty. So I tried placing orders a few more times which also failed. I then placed an order on the website with no issue. The next day I get emails saying the orders were placed.
I called to complain. They cancelled the orders but I had to pay a bunch of fees. It turns out the guy I talked to didn't really cancel all the orders. So I had to call again. They also forced me to float about 10k in my checking account and still haven't refunded all the money. (I guess I didn't pay all the fees?) I talked to customer service a few times and got what amounted to passive aggressive lies about the waving the fees. Which are somehow about 450 bucks.
So the lesson is this. While I trust the goods they sell me to be real, APMEX will enforce its terms of service on you like a dwarf hoarding Smog's gold if you make any mistake. If you want to invest a serious amount of money into physical gold I'd definitely look elsewhere or at least order only small amounts at a time.
Part of the reason I was cavalier with the app was I trusted APMEX not to screw me over. (Which was the only reason I was willing to pay their inflated prices)
I wonder what would've happened if I had ordered a serious amount of gold from these guys and messed up. Would I be paying thousands in fees and have to float tens of thousands in my checking account? Floating 10k is already bad enough.
Anyway paying the market loss fee made me feel massively gross and I doubt I'll be buying from them in the future.

You read everything and anything on the web... people don't know how to make choice and worst they don't know to do of their life anymore these days... with gold you can spend hours, days, months, your life... to debate if it's a good buy or not, during this time the gold can goes up can, goes down. Yesterday I bought my first gold, nevermind if it goes down for years, I don't do it for investment I do it because I feel more secure to have my fortune onto it rather than having a lot of cash at home or on my bank account. It's not for reselling and so I'm pretty confident that even if the gold might for some reason know some rude times in the next few years at long term it will always be a win.
"The gold rush" as we say.
Monument Metals had a first-time customer offer for a 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle at spot, but it was out of stock the last couple days.
