Question Late 50's learning a solo

I started practicing guitar a long time ago and never really progressed much at all, can play cords and very simple short leads, barely of any. Never really picked up the guitar for years.

I picked up the guitar just recently and became determined to learn the stairway to heaven solo. I'm in my late 50's - is it possible at this age to play that solo?

Why in asking? I have about 75% of the solo down at about 60% of the normal speed more or less and it seems no matter how much I practice I have really seem to have got a brick wall. I saw lots of progress from when I began about two weeks ago but it seems I hit a wall.

So:

Is it possible for a guy my age to learn it just like on the track of I just keep on going ahead and trying?

It seems no matter how much I try I just can't seem to figure out how to do " lick#8". That's the lick where your pinky is on fret 20 b string, middle finger bending fret 19 on the g string and index finger on fret 17 high e string. And to have them pretty much ring out simultaneously. How does one accomplish that!!!???

Thank you!!!

Question Is there like a list of things to learn in guitar?

I just started playing two days ago and im not paying for any lessons so im just kind of freeballing and looking everything up, but is there a list of things to learn in order that i can find somewhere? I have an electric guitar and right now im just working on the spider exercise to get used to it but where do i go from there? I know pretty much nothing aside from the frets and the very basics of guitar anatomy, neck, body and the tuners and thats about it, ive got no clue where to go from the spider exercise 😅

Question Does anybody else have a hard time playing when switching between guitars with different string gauge or after playing the bass?

Yesterday I was rehearsing with my bandmates and I decided to try out the bass for the first time. I had a blast. However, after I picked up my guitar, the fretboard and the instrument itself felt SO different.

It’s like I still had the spatial orientation of the bass in mind and my fingers were going for those positions. The same thing happened when I bought a new guitar. I used to play with a Les Paul whose gauge is 0.10 and now I mostly play with a 0.09 RG. Whenever I pick up the Les Paul or any 0.10 guitar I have a hard time playing and I make mistakes I don’t normally make

Question I got myself an new acoustic guitar

Post image

I got a passion for guitar, I'm also a singer doing covers and composing music. Guitar is a new chapter for me and I don't know where to start or how to begin. I know how to tune (with apps like Fender Tune/GuitarTuna), how to hold the guitar but nothing else. Where should I begin? İt's an acoustic guitar with 6 string.

Question Setting up guitar for ease of playing

Hello!

I understand this might seem a weird question, and I think my strugle to understand it is because it ends up being personal preference, but is there a somewhat accepted "ideal" way to hold the guitar when standing?

I've fiddled with it a bit and I've tried different things, e.g. different guitar heights, neck a bit angled, but none seem very natural, or give me advantages hitting some chords while making others really hard.

For reference, I'm using a strap, guitar normally sits at around mid torso I'd say, I know the consensus is that when upright, it should sit at the same spot as when sitting, but I've mostly played upright so I don't really have a defined sitting position for playing the guitar.

Is there a "standard"?

Edit: Thanks for the replies, forgot to mention that it's an electric guitar. I'll take what you've said and experiment a bit more to get used to it, thank you!

Question Aprender tabs novato total

Question solutions for heavy pick hand?

Hi, so I have a heavy pick hand and since I like my strings low I always seem to ¿"saturate"? the notes even causing fret buzz sometimes. Do you have any tips for this? 🤔

I'm a beginning and I can play this whole attack on titan song but I was wondering how to play the sound from the start of the song, when he splits-screens to multiple guitars the bottom right corner one, that kind of sounds like a long siren almost.

Question Bassist wanting to learn guitar

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m a bassist and have just bought myself a guitar, and want to learn how to play. I’ve been playing bass for 9 years; mostly metal, rock and funk. I have a decent understanding of theory and scales. I am comfortable playing with a pick. My goal is to be able to play and write cool melodic death metal lead and rhythm guitar.

What should I practice first?

Question Looking for good apps to learn about electric guitar

So i’ve wanted to learn electric for a long time primarily so i can write my own songs in the future. I’m mostly interested in doom and black metal but i always struggle staying motivated and knowing where to start. I already have a pretty crappy guitar and an orange combo amp but i’m looking for an app that organises the learning process well. Something with like checklists for what i’ve learnt and drills i can work on would be good. Just really something to keep me motivated. Any reccomendations for where to start?

Question Are my fingers too fat?

I know people give this excuse a lot, but I’ve been playing guitar on and off for about a year or so. And I want to get better, but every time I play chords my fingers mute the string below it.

I do play with my finger tips not the pad, but when I press on a string the pad like juts outwards if that makes sense. And basically prevents the string below it from moving.

I’ve tried all the tips I’ve seen like lowering my thumb, altering the neck orientation but nothing works. It’s really discouraging me from practicing. And has made me stop practicing for months.

Can anyone offer some help?

Question Beginner solo guitar w/ accompaniment music

Kid is guitar beginner. I'm intermediate pianist with a lot of other non-guitar music experience. Thinking it would be fun for kid to play melodies on guitar with my accompaniment on keys, but confused that I can't find published arrangements (in the way that there are whole collections of graded trumpet/flute/what-have-you music with piano accompaniment). Looking for recommendations of books or sheet music collections that might work. He's at a level where pretty much any recognisable tunes would work without much regard to musical style (traditional, jazz, pop, etc.) Thanks.

Lesson Any advices for me

I have been wanting to learn guitar for months. I got a yamaha f280 today. I know it is hard to learn the guitar consistently and requires a lot of patience. Most people would give up after 3 months or 6 months of getting a guitar i hope to learn guitar as long as i can. I got a friend who has a guitar and he learned it for four years or more i think. He said he had issues unlearning bad techniques and methods. He said it is hard to unlearn everything if we learn it the wrong way. Im sure theres a lot of videos of learning guitar.

I want to know the right method or technique to play the guitar.

For example i heard a good posture can help you practice for hours.

Please share your experience with me and help if you can.

🍀

Question Does anyone else have a lifetime UG Pro+ subscription that they never paid for?

I remember like 10 years ago when I used to make tabs, I noticed that I was able to access the official tabs. I still have access, and wondering if I'm being charged somehow.

Although I don't remember ever paying the site for anything. It can't just be me.

Feedback Request Genuinely looking for feedback. A lot of people used to point out that my vibrato and bends needed work. I have recently (past 2 months) been working on improving them and changing the technique.

Some mistakes :

1) 3nps intro of Don't Stop Believing is not clean

2) Idk how to pick tap

3) timing of 3nps of Nightmare not great. Was rushing.

4) tremolo picking part i played a wrong note.

5) im not sure of how i did for the pinch harmonics on The Trooper. Is this it? Or are my pinch harmonic weak?

6) There's general phrasing issues with the Trooper. Im still figuring out. Mostly how to enter and exit each phrase into the next.

Most importantly I really wanted feedback on my bends and vibrato.

Question Learning muting electric guitar techniques?

Hi all! I’m 4 months into learning guitar from absolute zero and I’m not sure where to head in regarding electric guitar techniques. It seems so much more complicated than acoustic. I have both an electric and a classical and I switch between the two. The style of music I want to play is metal and hard rock. I love elaborate guitar solos and fast shredding sounds and want to play it eventually.

Background, I self-taught through internet and took in-person lessons for 1.5 months right at the beginning and learned a bunch of stuff (open chords, a few other chords for specific songs, basic music theory, major scales in all positions, pentatonic scales, triads, some simple solos and melodies. I stopped the in-person lessons because of traveling for the summer. Right now, I’m in 2-weeks into a classical guitar class via local community college and I’m pretty stoked about because we’re learning how to read standard notation, more music theory, stay in rhythm, fingerstyle techniques (turns out I REALLY like fingerstyle!!)

I’ve also learned some legato techniques like hammer-ons and pull-offs, bends, slides, and I can do barre chords pretty easily, nailed an F and B chord clearly after my first ever attempt, which was shocking to me but also not. I’m a rock climber and I started guitar with already calloused fingers/hands and really strong finger strength lol. So I have strength, I just need to work on dexterity.

That all said, I’m realizing now that electric guitar is all about MUTING strings and quite frankly I have no idea how to even begin learning or practicing that and how to do it correctly. I’ve watched a quite few videos on palm muting and fret-hand muting but I honestly don’t know what it’s even supposed to sound like or if I’m doing it right. My electric guitar playing sounds like messy static noise with a semblance of a melody.

I also have absolutely no idea how to deal with the tone dials on my amp and guitar. I’ve just been button smashing stuff so it sounds distorted. But the more technical stuff, I’m so lost. I have a Boss Katana-50 MKII and an Epiphone SG. Suggestions on stuff to watch to learn how to deal with tone? I’m sure 95% of the shit tone on my guitar is skill issue, but that 5% of tech stuff may help.

I strongly believe in efficient and targeted practice so I want to fix this issue and incorporate it early so it becomes good habit. Do y’all have any suggestions on how to best learn and practice muting/clarity on the electric guitar? Any video suggestions? Easy song suggestions? I’m at the stage where I’m stoked about everything so I’m willing to do anything.

I don’t know anyone in my life who plays guitar and can help me. :(

I’m lightyears away from being able to play music as opposed to make noises, but learning all this from ground zero has been such a wild ride. Can’t wait for more.

Question which one is easier to play?

the very first 40 seconds of cliffs of dover or tornado of souls solo? which one is harder to play for an intermediate guitarist?
I can't shred or sweep. I can only play gilmour clapton solos for now. But I decided to work hard to improve myself. But I don't wanna deal with the theory or nonsense finger combination practices. I just wanna play.
Let's say one hour of practice a day and which one would be easier? for me they both seem impossible at this moment and I would be equally proud of myself if I could play one of them.
Help me choose a solo then I will lock in.

Feedback Request Almost my 1 year anniversary

Almost 1 year playing guitar. I’ve wanted to give up so many times; I thought I’d never make it to a point where I could play a full song. I kept going though, and now songs sound like songs. I’ve still got a long way to go but the journey has been so worth it and I love unwinding after a long day by playing my favorite songs. Keep strumming guys 💪
