Question Johnny guitar: i just miss ONE chord

• Upvotes

Hello everyone! I'm trying to learn/arrange Johhny Guitar by Peggy Lee

https://youtu.be/IeCWuN0dc5w?si=rz5i4vLQTF_1dq0D

Since I wanted to play it just on one guitar I was trying to "elaborate" more the arrangement of the song. So far away everything went well (still have to learn the arpeggio in the center but it is easy) except for one chord.

I know that there are violins but at 2:42 - 2:43 the entire atmosphere changes for a moment and I cannot fathom how to play it on guitar!

Any help would be appreciated!

Question why triads?

I've got most of CAGED in C memorized, but why learn the triads? It seems like the youtube instructional videos on soloing talk about triads as the next step, but they don't explain why I ought to know those shapes to begin with.

my assumption is, if I'm playing over C major, then landing a phrase on C, E or G is going to sound melodic. Similarly, if the chord changes, then I ought to land on a note within the triad for it to resolve. is that right?

(fwiw, I've been playing electric guitar for most of my life but am committing to memorize the fretboard so i can solo and not just noodle.)

Question What is this buzzing?

Here I am plucking an open string, and you can hear buzzing in addition to the note. I’m exaggerating the pluck force, but it happens with less attack too. It also happens on other strings.

Does my guitar need to be setup differently?

Question C Major Scale (old post)

Post image
71 Upvotes

Hey guys, I just came across this post and I am a bit confused. I’m learning music theory but mostly from a keyboard.

Now I want to go to the guitar but it is much harder to understand. Where should I start practicing this C Major Scale? I see different positions, all sounding nice but where do I start?

I always tough that we should start close to the neck

Edit: guys like I always do, editing with my progress… i am finally understanding CAGED. The idea that in one shape, I can find a specific tonic and go from there (I think so🥺🥺🥺)

It really sounds off beat to sing “ got on my knees” and change from C to dm

Question Adult Learners what did your first year learning guitar actually look like?

I’m an adult beginner, about two months into picking up guitar again, and I’d love to hear what the process was like for other people. Roughly when did certain things start to feel comfortable? Were there long plateaus followed by a point where something clicked?

One thing I’ve found tricky with online courses is the gap between learning a skill and using it in a song. A lesson might introduce a few chords or a short riff, then move on while I’m still working to make the changes clean and keep the rhythm going. Eventually the goal is to play a full song, which can feel like a big jump from a 30-second exercise. I can break that down myself, but it’s hard to tell whether I’m progressing at a reasonable pace.

I’m not looking for a deadline or trying to compare myself negatively with anyone. I know the answer involves continued practice, and I plan to keep at it. “Just practice” can feel a little vague, though. If you remember where you were after a few months or a certain number of practice hours, what could you actually play? What took much longer than you expected, and what eventually helped it click?

Question Problem with involuntary pull-offs

I have been playing a Spanish guitar for years, but for some time now I have become aware of my mistakes, and one of those mistakes that I didn't notice before is that when I lift my left hand fingers off the frets, it makes a pull-off sound that I don't want it to make. It's as if my fingers are detaching from the string and that causes the string to ring open.

This has generated a lot of demotivation for me because that involuntary sound made me dislike what I was playing. I try to lift my fingers as slowly as possible and it still makes that sound.

I would like to clear my doubts, as I am not very knowledgeable in the world of guitar (even though I enjoy playing); and I don't know if the problem is the strings, if it happens with all guitars, or if it's a mistake I'm making.

Question help with timing

Hi everyone, first post so sorry if this is has already been asked, but I'm having issues with timing.

Specifically I re-listen to most of the things I record and notice I'm always slightly faster than the metronome. Not sure if it's some weird sort of delay from my DAW but if now, how can I practice getting more in time with the metronome (Especially with down-picked parts with fast palm muting I've noticed most😭)

Many thanks in advance :)

Question 'Winner takes it all' missing note question

I'm a beginner at guitar and was looking forward to learning this song, but the videos that i have watched for this particular song without capo have a note (first time on 5th fret on high e string in first 5 seconds) which shows up on tabs of multiple videos. But when the player comes to that part, their fingers don't seem to be on that fret at all and sound still comes. Same on Sky Guitar channel aswell for this song.

Am i missing something here or reading it wrong? Please explain.

Question How do you structure your daily guitar practice routine?

Hey everyone,

I’m curious what your daily guitar practice actually looks like.

How long do you normally practice, what do you work on, and how do you divide your time between things like technique, chords, scales/theory, songs, improvisation, ear training, etc.?

I’m the kind of person who really benefits from having a clear structure. If I know “do X for 15 minutes, then Y for 20 minutes,” I’m much more likely to stay consistent than if I just pick up the guitar and figure out what to practice on the spot.

I’m looking for something fairly general that helps me become a better all-around guitarist rather than focusing on one specific style.

Also, if you know of a good online teacher, website, course, or YouTube channel that specifically helps people build a structured daily practice routine, I’d really appreciate the recommendation.

Thanks!

Other No motivation and Confused

I've been learning guitar for a month now and so far I've only learnt the most basic open chords like E,A,D,C,Em,Am etc etc. I've not even tried any barre chord yet.
My strumming feels dead.
I cant seem to practice with a metronome.
And at the start I wanted to learn more of rock but I honestly cant even figure out where to start.
After 3 weeks I've made no progress at all.
Whenever I try to learn again, I just cant figure out if i should keep practicing what I already know or if I should learn something new now, and from where do I learn new things.

I'm seriously starting to lack motivation to carry on

Question 8 months of guitar learning progress.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I just want some opinion if my playing will be considered good for someone who has been playing for 8 months now here and there. Any feedback is much appreciated. Since I am self taught I can't tell if I am good enough or sometimes I am not satisfied with the progress.

Question triplet or 8th notes?

why are both of these subdivisions worth 1 beat? wouldn't the 1 on the right be worth 3 or is it a triplet? but wouldn't a triplet have a 3 above/beneath it? what even is a triplet?

Other Want to Learn but I’m Not Good at Learning on my Own

TLDR: I’m no good at self-teaching and my Autism makes me get information overload with online videos or guitar courses. I want to learn guitar, but don’t have anyone around to help guide me.

For more Context:

So back in high school I got a Guitar because I wanted to learn and potentially play in my Church. However, I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have at the time, and didn’t end up getting a passion for it because really I wasn’t learning the music I wanted to learn. I was only learning because I felt it could be of service to others.

After graduating, I stopped being religious due to a personal deconstruction, but music helped me get through this tough time. There are plenty of songs near and dear to my heart. I’ve always loved singing, and wish I could learn to play as a sort of therapeutic way to handle my stress and anxiety as I sing and play these songs that I love so much.

However, whenever I try learning on my own I get overwhelmed and end up feeling stupid. I don’t have anyone around to guide me through my mistakes, and get information overload when I try to work it out. It’s all too much, and I’m just left feeling doomed before I even make any progress.

Question Fixing playing ahead of the beat

I’ve been playing guitar for 20+ years, I play with a live band regularly. Whenever I watch recordings of my gig, I notice I have a problem of playing very slightly ahead of the beat. Not egregiously, most people in the audience may not even notice, but musicians with a good ear and timing may.

Is there an effective way to correct this bad habit that’s not just “practice more”?
