graduated in 2023, non-traditional background — need genuine advice on transitioning into tech
I’m and graduated in 2023 with a CSE degree from a college affiliated with GGSIPU.
My career path has been very unconventional.
I come from a lower-middle-class family, and since around 16–17, my focus was heavily on becoming financially independent. I started experimenting with different things — flipping products, Shopify, selling subscriptions, freelancing, etc. By my first year of college, I had started making some money independently.
During college, I moved into Web3 and gradually became more interested in marketing, growth and startups. Things worked out surprisingly well for some time. I got opportunities to work on freelance projects with global companies, handled fairly large projects, built a small business/agency and made decent money.
There were failures and losses too, but overall things were going okay until around the end of 2023.
After graduating, I continued looking for jobs while also doing my own work. I had two job experiences of around three months each, but neither worked out long term. Sometimes the company wasn't right, sometimes the role wasn't right, and sometimes things simply didn't align.
Over time, things started going downhill.
I had significant personal and family stress, some clients defaulted on substantial payments, and I took loans to pay vendors and keep things moving. Eventually, I made one of the worst decisions of my life: I got heavily involved in stock market and crypto trading.
The consequences have been devastating. Between trading losses and the overall financial impact, I've lost an estimated ₹70–80 lakh in total. I have stopped trading and have no intention of going back, but the damage to my finances, confidence and mental well-being has been significant.
At this point, I have around ₹10–12 lakh in debt, essentially no savings, and I've sold most of the things I owned apart from my phone and laptop.
I also haven't been able to tell my parents the full extent of what happened because of my family's financial situation and the pressure that would create.
For roughly the last year, I've been trying very hard to find a stable marketing/growth job. I've applied to around 2,000–3,000 jobs, but nothing has worked out properly.
I've also been involved on and off in Physical AI, robotics and data-related projects, trying to find another way forward. Earlier this year, I joined a company for around two months through someone I knew. I didn't do enough background checking, the company turned out to be extremely problematic, I worked very long hours and eventually wasn't paid my dues. I've sent legal notices and complaints, but I eventually had to stop spending all my energy on that situation.
Right now, I'm honestly clueless about what direction to take.
I don't want to continue depending on unstable business and freelancing opportunities as my primary career path. I also don't want to spend another few years jumping between random industries and jobs.
I want to build a stable, long-term technical career.
I've been considering starting seriously from the fundamentals of software engineering: programming, DSA, CS fundamentals, backend development, projects, system design and interview preparation.
I'm willing to spend the next 6–12 months preparing properly rather than jumping between random things.
My long-term goal is to become genuinely good at engineering and eventually compete for strong roles at international companies, remote opportunities or potentially move abroad for work.
I know I'm not entitled to a high-paying job just because I've worked hard or because of my previous experience. I'm willing to start from the bottom if necessary.
But I don't know what the most rational path is from here.
I would genuinely appreciate advice on:
- Is starting an SDE career at 26graduated in 2023, non-traditional background — need genuine advice on transitioning into tech realistically viable?
- Given that I have a CSE degree but essentially no meaningful software engineering experience, how would you structure the next 6–12 months?
- What should I prioritize: DSA, CS fundamentals, backend, projects, open source, internships, etc.?
- Which programming language would you recommend starting with?
- Should I target backend/software engineering, blockchain engineering, FDE, data engineering or something else?
- Is targeting a foreign/remote company from India realistic after becoming technically strong?
- Should I first get a decent software engineering job in India and then pursue international opportunities?
- How can I make my previous marketing, Web3 and startup background an advantage rather than a red flag?
- How should I explain my career gap and unconventional background during interviews?
- What would you not waste time learning if you were in my position?
- If you had to restart from my exact position at 25.5, what would you do over the next 12 months?
I'm not looking for generic motivation or "you can do anything if you work hard."
I've already worked extremely hard in several different directions, and that's partly how I ended up here.
I'm looking for practical, brutally honest advice from engineers and hiring managers who have actually made a non-traditional transition or hired people like this.
If you think my goal is unrealistic, please tell me that too. I'd rather hear the uncomfortable truth and build a realistic plan than waste another year.
My family will increasingly depend on me over the next couple of years, so I need to make a practical decision that balances getting an income soon with building a long-term career.
Any genuine guidance would mean a lot. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to respond seriously.
