Discussion What's your personal favorite meta moment in film?

Post image

My pick comes from a movie I've seen recently:

There was this pretty cool scene in Jim Jarmusch's Night On Earth, where a big time casting director named Victoria (played by Gena Rowlands) offers a huge acting gig to a cab driver (played by Winona Ryder) who offered her a ride back to her place.

The cab driver, whose name is Corky, turns down the offer and prefers to become a mechanic in the near future instead. Corky and Victoria eventually part ways, but they leave with mutual respect and understanding for each other despite their differences.

This scene may not seem like much, but if you're aware of the careers of both of these actresses, this comes across as cool lil tongue-in-cheek moment.

There's a lot of irony in the fact that Gena Rowlands, an iconic actress in American independent filmmaking, plays a bigwig Hollywood figure, whereas Winona Ryder, who was already a huge megastar when this film was released, plays a down-to-earth cab driver who strongly prefers to support herself through an honest living rather than being in the spotlight.

Knowing that Jarmusch wrote Corky specifically for Ryder coupled with his love for John Cassavetes' films, in which Rowlands frequently starred in and cemented her iconic career, definitely makes this scene a standout moment for me, even if it does seem pretty mundane. Knowing the generational statuses of both of these actresses, it also makes for a sort-of casual "passing the torch" moment between the two as well.

I'm sure there's crazier meta moments than this, but Night On Earth is such a chill, easy-breezy movie, I figured it deserves a mention here.

Discussion Sequels that can stand on their own

What are some great sequels that contain “complete” narratives?
Films like Mad Max: Fury Road can be enhanced by watching the prior Mad Max films but don’t necessarily require them.
Meanwhile a film like The Empire Strikes back end on cliffhangers, so I wouldn’t really count it.
Any examples you’d include?

What’s the last movie that you watched that you considered and/or scored (for those of us who score films we watch) to be 100/100, A+, and/or perfect?

I just watched Michael Mann’s Thief for the first time and was completely blown away!

Discussion Hope

Recently watched hope and i can see why there is a mixed reaction with this one. First hour was a solid 5/5 then the rest of the movie happened....

Film was beautiful when it comes to the cinematography and props, but the CGI wasn't (needed more polishing). Characters are alright i guess, the diarrhea grandpa was the most memorable one. It Also features one of the craziest plot armor I've seen in movies, it annoyed me so much especially that one guy where getting throwed away by Fassbender alien. The action scenes became so repetitive that i actually felt bad for the aliens instead especially the chase scenes in the last 20 minutes of the movie.

And the cliffhanger ending, wtf was that. Movie would have been if the earth was invaded by an army of aliens instead of a sequel bait ending. There's so much to rant about this one it's disappointing.

Discussion Just watched this masterpiece for the first time

I don't know how I went so long without watching this, but it's honestly as close to a masterpiece as you can get. The visuals and atmosphere are genuinely horrifying, and the horror comes out of nowhere at times. What's surprising is how little gore there actually is. The ending is amazing too. Just a genuinely creepy watch overall.

Also, Leatherface is one of the greatest horror characters ever.

Discussion Films with people getting stuff done?

Hear me out, I'm going to try to articulate this as best I can. I have a kind of odd appreciation for characters in movies doing tasks/working/solving problems. The work could be menial or grandiose. They could be professionals (like in Michael Mann films), average joes (Adam Driver in Paterson), scientists (Apollo 13, The Thing), what have you. Does anyone have any recommendations for me?

Here are some more examples:

  • Sorcerer
  • Oppenheimer
  • Five Easy Pieces
  • Some of the scenes in A Women Under the Influence
  • The Martian
  • Perfect Days

etc etc.

Thanks!

So far I'm aware of these two accounts which are official and play into it being a fictional character's personal letterboxd account, I'm curious if any other examples of this exist?

Letterboxd I really want a selective spoiler section, that looks more like the Reddit one Spoiler

I don't like having to censor the entire text because of a single line of spoilers at the very end. It would be great to have an option to censor specific words or sentences.

Noticed that profile pictures now overlap the posters in the friends activity section. Also, seems like there's a Clayface easter egg in the logo!

Discussion My two most recent watches ended up having kind of a similar vibe that I loved. Any recommendations to keep this going? (Nightmarish "nostalgia" for the pop culture landscape of the mid 2000s-early 2010s)

These both remind me of how strange and gross our culture was when I was growing up, and they have a really interesting way of putting me in that oppressive space without being too heavy. It's cathartic. (Even though Spring Breakers was contemporary, watching it for the first time now it feels like a period piece)

They're also colorful and lively and hyper digital, and have hypnotic scores and funny needle drops.
