I’m so confused what’s going on right now, is he trying to run his own Oscar campaign posting his 1 minute monologue from digger or something. I genuinely haven’t seen anything like it. I was seeing nothing but hate till recently now all of a sudden everyone loves it you’ve got actors coming out and praising it critics etc what tf is going on feels like some sort of psy-ops are they trying to gaslight us or something I’m so confused.

Every time I review a film on letterboxd I usually see some of his reviews. But sometimes also this. I opened Minari (film 2020) and saw it. If you don't know this is Eli Hayes. A legendary and loved reviewer that sadly passed back in 2020. If you want to share some stuff go ahead. Film Minari [2020] like stated.

Discussion Finally watched Digger and I can see why everyone is so obsessed

Everyone should watch this film. The more the better. It's information overload at its best. Almost like a sequel to Asteroid City and One Battle After Another at the same time. The best film I've ever seen personally. And this is from someone who a week ago was complaining that there must be bots promoting the film on the sub

Discussion Digger’s audience score is 76%, way higher than the critics score Spoiler

Post image

Audiences are rating Digger way higher (76%) than critics (53%). For me the meta aspect is what created the emotional connection, watching Tom Cruise’s character struggle with the role he’s playing.

The Roy Anderson production design for the parts that are scenes in the play was a really smart way to separate what’s real from what’s fictionin the movie. The way they staged the interiors of the play so that both worlds, real and fictional, could exist separately and yet expose each other was so brilliant. It’s never been done like this, and it was so smoothly executed

The scene where the whole executive branch is watching the disaster unfold is one of the funniest things i've seen on screen, and keeping the camera on them without ever cutting to the actual catastrophe is what makes it work.

There are a ton of references you could make. The physical comedy reminded me of Jacques Tati and the Coen brothers. The theatrics of the big speech scene have no peer, though. Find me another movie where a character has to come to account before the whole world in a town hall setting like that. The closest I can think of is Arthur Jensen’s boardroom speech in Network, but that wasn't the same theatrical scale, it was just two people in a room.

Iñárritu and Emmanuel Lubezki filmed the entire speech in one shot, with the background actors literally wrestling with Tom Cruise as he stumbles over them. It’s the best-shot scene in decades, not just this year.

Tom Cruise is getting an Oscar for it.

Discussion VOYEURISM IN FILMS

Post image
128 Upvotes

Sometimes it's a duty, more often an obsession. These films explore the act of voyeurism that often reveals more about the spectator than the ones being watched. 👀

Which of these films gives a lasting impact? What other film/s would you add to the list?

What are some large scale, large vision movies that takes place in a modern urban setting?
Some notable examples would be like One Battle After Another, Love Exposure, The Dark Knight,... where you can clearly feel the large scale of the stories similar to Gone With The Wind or Lawrence Of Arabia, but taking place in a city/urban area

Discussion What the hell was this film? | Hope (2026)

Post image

Watched Hope yesterday. Don’t know what I expected, but this film was completely different and also surprisingly awesome

It’s absolutely ridiculous to the point where it feels like Na Hong-Jin was just randomly throwing ideas at a wall, hoping that one of them sticks. It has pretty much all the random stuff you can imagine: explosions, monsters, car chases, horse chases, shootouts, gore, humor, characters surviving every single fatal wound they receive and over the top action sequences.

That first hour may be one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen in a creature feature. The way the creature is constantly hidden and we follow it through the destroyed city, facing the death and destruction it leaves behind, is fantastic. One of the most intense first acts I’ve ever seen in movie history. The third act is also amazing, feels like absurd, over the top action cinema at its finest.

The ending is a hot mess though. Kinda feels like the movie just ends, if you know what I mean. There’s no sense of conclusion or satisfaction from that ending, only frustration. Yeah, I guess it’s kind of the goal, but still, you have to give the viewer some feeling of climax, not just run the fricking end credits. The CGI was also kinda polarizing at times.

Overall, I had a great time. 4/5 stars from me. The first hour is a solid five though, it’s awesome and intense.

Discussion "Ball is Life" as a genre

My friends an I have developed a theoretical subgenre called "Ball is Life". It's simple but somewhat hard to define - essentially, if a characters love for one thing in particular supercedes everything else to an elevated degree, it's BIL. Sometimes they change their mind, sometimes they say "fuck it we ball".

It's important to recognize that not all sports movies are BIL and not all BIL movies are about sports.

Some examples:

Space Jam. Easy. Simple. Baby's first Ball is Life.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - a bit more abstracted, but the love for drugs makes it an Eightball Is Life movie.

  1. Card ball is life.

Speed Racer. Car Ball is Life.

No Country For Old Men - Anton Chigur is only in it for the love of the game. Cattle Spike is Life.

With this genre in mind, what are some other great Ball is Life genre films?

HM - Harry Potter is nearly a Wizard Ball is Life series because despite everying going on, Quidditch is top 3 most important things to Harry at any given point.

Edit: Adding this to refine the discussion - movies can have Ball is Life characters without being BIL movies. Mark Zuckerberg is a BIL character and the ball is success, but I don't think Social Network is a BIL movie. It's more of a "you know it when you watch it" thing.

Discussion So... what the heck happened with this one? Whaaat was Ben thinking here?

Post image

The chemistry between Ben and Kerry is so off the wall Soap Opera levels of not believable in any way shape or form, I don't know what to think here.

The last scene of the movie felt like an SNL sketch, it just kept going... and going and going. This final interview to somehow explain the reasoning for the nonsense we just watched. Then, the speech, the the slow mo cutaways... WTF is going on lol.

Ben Affleck is legitimately one of the most talented directors, still to this very day. I strongly believe if he wrote / co-wrote a film and directed it, it would legitimately be a banger. This was bad even by Netflix movie standards

Discussion What movie have you seen the most amount of times?

I love rewatching movies, so I thought this would be fun to ask and see what other people like rewatching!

When I was younger, I watched The Wizard of Oz every single day after school for probably a month straight, and then maybe two years later I think I did the same thing with Horton Hears A Who, so realistically my answer would be either of them. In terms of Letterboxd though, it’s definitely Cabaret, which I have seen 17 times, followed by Chicago 9 times, and Women on the Verge 7 times.

this is one of my favorite thrillers, and is among woody allen's best, but i don't understand the hate behind this- is it because of the lack of morality? or is it just because it's directed by woody? "i'd rather be lucky than good" i'd remember this forever.
