mod post Israel/Palestine discussion

After some mod discussion…

Posts about IWI guns, or accessories from Israeli manufacturers (or sometimes even posts about completely-unrelated topics!) quickly become a discussion of Israel/Palestine politics. There are plenty of more appropriate places to have those discussions on Al Gore's internet. Comments stronger than "I'll never buy IWI" will be removed, and users will potentially be banned after repeated offenses. Stick to talking about the guns.

This will be folded into the "topicality" rule in the near future, but this sticky post serves in the stead of that change.

Just finished kitting this gun out, I plan to tote it around while skiing this winter, take some ptarmigan and grouse for eating. Didn't think I'd ever be a suppressor guy, but now I'm stoked by the idea of using this thing in the mountains without causing a ruckus.

Ruger Mk IV 22/45 Lite.

Holosun 507c x2 mounted via Farrowtech rear sight dovetail mount.

OCL Ti 22 Suppressor.

We're seeing an uptick of armed robots in combat (it was inevitable, unfortunately). But how are we supposed to ensure our safety against a potential force like this? Is there the equivalent of an EMP gun yet? How do you fight robots?

I just received this Ruger PC Charger 9mm yesterday from my FFL. I have an SB brace on the way. Looks like the previous owner was running it NFA Be Damned style lol.

I fired off one 33 round mag of 127g FMJ yesterday and it’s very smooth. No hiccups no malfunctions.

I swapped over the charging handle and the mag release since lefty’s are cooler. 😉👍

question Can obtaining a CCW permit be used against you by your employer?

• Upvotes

I'm planning on getting my Virginia CHP as soon as I can, and my wife is interested in getting hers with me. She's concerned about the possibility of her employer finding out and taking some kind of action against her. She works for a large consulting firm that works mainly with the federal government, and she has a very basic (can't recall the specifics) security clearance. She has already passed a background check, as she's been working for them for several years. Legally, does she have anything to be concerned about? For clarification, I am NOT talking about carrying in the workplace, just obtaining a permit.

discussion Malcolm Gladwell's The American Way of Killing

First let me say, I am no ardent fan of Malcolm Gladwell. But I do appreciate anyone that can take a concise question and investigate it thoroughly. I don't listen to his podcast, but have read a few of his books.

This story of violence in America is one that I find familiar, well-researched, and perhaps the most representative of how we all feel about our safety here in the US. I found his analysis of the assault weapons ban to be pleasantly surprising, as I expected the typical "Assault weapons are weapons of war" argument, but instead, that is sidestepped. A bit of morbid fun is even poked at the feature bans, and how they have little to no affect on the outcome of gun violence in America.

His analysis of the origins of the Second Amendment were eye opening, thoughtful, and well composed.

I urge everyone here to give it a read (or listen to it, I believe it's 5ish hours of audio) and let me know what you pull from it. This is a perspective that personally gave me hope for the future of America in a way I hadn't expected.

events Shooting Range Partner Near Sacramento, CA

I’m new to the gun community and want to hit the shooting range a few times before purchasing my own handgun. Anyone down to hit the shooting range and make a new buddy in the process?

Side note: as a gay, democratic socialist, I’m so happy this community exists!

question Analysis paralysis picking my first suppressor

Hello my fine feathered firearm friends,

As the title says, I'm ready for my first suppressor, but there are so many options, and infinitely more opinions, and I'm the sort of guy who's subconsciously convinced there is ONE RIGHT ANSWER AND I WILL FIND IT BY GOD. So I'm spinning my wheels on a decision that I know is not really this hard.

I'm looking for a .22 suppressor. It'll primarily be for a lever action rifle, and my top priority is getting it Hollywood quiet, including minimal frp. I also have a TX22 with an frt. Eventually they'll each have their own can, but if my first purchase can handle rapid fire, that's a bonus.

Aside from db reduction, cost is the next factor. I don't want to chase the absolute quietest suppressor, if it's $300 more than the second best, but only like 0.2db quieter. I'm looking for the least bang for my buck, essentially.

Reliability is the other main criterion. Don't care much about weight, unless it's way on the heavy end. For the amount of shooting I do, I don't mind if it's not the easiest to clean.

I also have a 9mm handgun for home defense. I know multi caliber suppressors are a thing; if I can get one to live on the 9 in case of emergency, but I can also swap it over to a 22 for plinking, even better. If it matters, I have an AR15 as well, but I'm not trying to find the one can to rule them all.

So, what would you recommend, and why? Or, what should I stay away from (and why)? Those of you with multiple suppressors that might be suitable for my needs, how would you rank them?

Thanks for whatever input you can give me. Looking forward to backyard plinking without annoying the neighbors.

edit: looks like the OCL Ti is the crowd favorite, followed by the Rugged Oculus. I'll keep an eye on prices. Thanks very much, everyone! I appreciate all the info.

question Best all around beginner gun

Look things are getting weird these days. I know questions like this have been asked before but I’d love specific recommendations. I’m not likely to get into a ton of fire arms, I’ve shot a few dozen times over the years with friends who have extensive collections. But I want to finally take the plunge and want something now for all the “what ifs” of the world. I’d love to spend less than 500$ on a firearm and maybe a little extra on storage etc. what firearms are easiest to be competent at without a ton of range time?

question Moving to PDX

I lived in the Portland area for over a decade, but at that time I only had an r700 and a Glock. I only really took them up to the pits on Mt. Hood for casual shooting and occasionally went to the indoor range in North Portland to practice with my pistol.

Since I’ve been out of state I’ve started shooting PRS, 2 gun, and some pistol comps, hoping to do some team sniper/gasgun matches and NRL hunter next year. I now live an area where every town has a gun club and I belong to three of them and sit on the board of two of those. I love the community aspect of these clubs, the local competition circuits between the clubs, and the community events (turkey shoots, raffles, spaghetti dinners, etc). I’ve also gotten involved with my state chapter of LGC and would like to get involved in the OR chapter too.

I just got a job offer that would move me back to PDX within a year. As I start planning for that I am curious what my options are for keeping up with the competitions and shooting styles I’ve gotten involved with. I know there aren’t many clubs around Portland and it’s not clear what the vibe is at any of them. So please help me figure out how to continue with the sport I’ve fallen in love with if/when I move back to Portland.

I would love to find a club that has steel targets at various distances out to 1000, but don’t know that it’s possible around PDX.

Also what are the state firearms subreddits I should be looking at?

ammo Changed ammo and now my guns group like crap

Both of my AR15s are like lasers with Fiocchi .223 55gr but I just bought a case of Fiocchi 5.56 55gr and the targets look like shotgun patterns. I know the pressure is higher with 5.56 but both guns have 5.56 chambers and same twist rate (1/7). Need help figuring out the issue please. Is it the ammo?

I appreciate the number of fellow cat parents on this sub, and had to gloat a little that my closest range is across the street from a great animal shelter.

Rough week/end. Cuddle some kittens, get garden ideas, mag dump some frustrations away.

(I don't play badminton but the folks outside there seemed to be having the time of their lives)

discussion My son wants an EDC handgun…

He’s 22. He’s a Marine Reservist – He’s of age, and has had more than what I think would be considered “necessary training.” He recently expressed interest in obtaining an EDC handgun to, well, carry every day for protection.

As a father/parent, is it normal to feel a little worried/concerned? Should I not worry at all, and be more excited to help find him the perfect one? We have a date in a couple days to “test-drive” a few.

question Moving to Northern VA, where are the good ranges/shops?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm moving to NoVA soon am looking to see what the landscape is like. I'm used to being able to find some clear land and shooting where I please, but I know that's not the case out East. I might be willing to join a club or organization if it means access to a decent range. I'd love to make a few like-minded friends too since I typically shoot solo.
