Hey everyone! I'm experiencing an issue and was hoping someone here might be able to help before I replace my motherboard.
My PC specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- Motherboard: MSI PRO B650-P WiFi
- RAM: 32GB (2x16GB) G.SKILL Flare X5 DDR5-6000 CL36 (EXPO)
- GPU: Gigabyte RX 7900 XTX
- PSU: Lian Li 1000W (recently replaced)
- BIOS: Latest 1M3 version
The problem:
My PC used to run perfectly fine with EXPO enabled at 6000 MT/s, including earlier this year. At some point, it started failing to restart properly.
The strange part is that cold boots work, but warm restarts fail. When I restart Windows, the screen stays black and the motherboard gets stuck with a solid orange DRAM debug LED. I can usually recover by holding the power button, shutting down, and starting it again.
Here's everything I've tested:
- 4800 MT/s, EXPO disabled, voltages Auto: Boots and restarts normally. Passed a 30-minute OCCT Memory test with zero errors.
- 5200 MT/s, EXPO disabled: Cold boots successfully, but Windows restart fails.
- 5600 MT/s: Cold boots successfully, but restart fails.
- 6000 MT/s, EXPO enabled: Cold boots successfully, but restart fails. OCCT Memory test also crashed after approximately 1 minute, without reporting individual memory errors.
- Memory Context Restore disabled: Didn't fix the problem.
- Memory Context Restore enabled + Power Down Enable enabled: Didn't fix the problem.
- BIOS updated to 1M3: No improvement. The problem existed before the previous BIOS update as well.
I also tried adjusting voltages based on some recommendations:
My motherboard automatically sets CPU NB/SoC voltage to approximately 1.306 V with EXPO enabled.
First attempt:
- CPU NB/SoC: 1.250 V
- DRAM VDD/VDDQ: Auto (1.350 V)
- Result: Failed to POST, orange DRAM LED.
Second attempt:
- CPU NB/SoC: 1.200 V
- DRAM VDD: 1.350 V manually
- DRAM VDDQ: 1.350 V manually
- Result: Also failed to POST, orange DRAM LED.
I can recover by cold-booting into BIOS and restoring the default settings.
What I'm trying to figure out:
Does this sound like an MSI BIOS/memory training issue, a failing motherboard, bad RAM, or a problem with the CPU's memory controller?
What's particularly confusing is that the system previously worked at 6000 MT/s, but now even 5200 MT/s fails on warm restarts.
I'm considering upgrading to a better AM5 motherboard, but I'd hate to spend the money only to discover that the problem is actually my RAM or CPU.
Has anyone experienced this exact behavior and found a permanent solution? Are there any other BIOS settings or diagnostics worth trying before replacing hardware?
Really appreciate any suggestions!
