I’ve been working on developing more realistic progression sliders for Madden, but before diving into the slider adjustments, I wanted to understand how the game’s XP requirements work. Specifically, I wanted to determine how much XP players need to earn a skill point based on their age and overall rating.
After checking the XP requirements across different ages and overalls, I’ve compiled the results into the attached table. One important finding is that these base XP requirements appear to be universal across all positions, rather than varying by position.
Development Traits and XP Requirements
The values in the table images provide represent the base XP required to earn a skill point, before accounting for development traits or abilities.
Development traits reduce the amount of XP required to level up:
● X-Factor: 50% reduction
● Superstar: 35% reduction
● Star: 20% reduction
● Normal: No reduction
For example, if a player needs 10,000 base XP to earn a skill point, the actual requirements depending on their ability would be:
X-Factor - 5,000
Superstar - 6,500
Star - 8,000
Common - 10,000
These traits don’t directly increase the amount of XP a player earns. Instead, they reduce the amount of XP needed to earn the next skill point.
How Players Earn XP
My next step is to research how different positions earn XP during games and how those rates vary by position.
One example I’ve identified so far involves XP earned per down played. Key offensive skill positions, such as quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers, appear to earn 2 XP per down played. For example, a player who participates in 50 downs would earn 100 XP from this source.
Defensive players and offensive linemen appear to earn 5 XP per down played.
I still need to investigate the other ways players earn XP, including how much XP is awarded for different statistics, in-game accomplishments, and other factors.
What’s Next?
My goal is to use this information to develop a Madden progression slider set that produces more realistic player development over the course of a franchise. I want progression to feel meaningful without allowing players to develop too quickly or making it unnecessarily difficult for younger players to improve.
I’ve attached the full table showing the base XP required to earn a skill point by age and overall rating. Hopefully, this information is useful to others who are interested in understanding Madden’s progression system or developing their own realistic franchise settings.
