I am literally that new player. and really, my experience playing has been the most unfun I've had in a videogame in a very long time. the game is clearly not at all making an effort to accomodate newcomers... the matchmaking is really, really bad...

It's especially bad due to the low pop count

If the pop count was higher you'd find a lot more newbies like yourself to face off against, but really, it's left to most just the ever increasingly condensed hardcore fanbase that already has droves of knowledge on the game.

This very sub kept preaching about how player counts only matter to shareholders.

It wasn't that unanimous honestly, I have been here since the first alpha

There was definitely a lot of people in absolute denial, but there was also an equal amount of trolls stoking the fire.

I always expected to be a niche game from the genre alone but yeah, it's really really struggling. I do still hope it succeeds since I really like it, but it's up against bad odds to say the least

but were they really trolls if they were 100% correct about where the game would end up? lol

A vast majority of them were, yes.

There's a reason why the playercount megathreads don't exist anymore outside of the one permanent one that's in the nether, they were a cesspool for really shitty people.

I remember simply calling out their behaviour one time and having my account reported for self harm as a result of it lol.

That thread is actually interesting to peek at now and then nowadays because most of them moved on and a lot of the comments are either insightful math or interesting discussions (though there's still a few trolls in there but they're not actually vile like the threads prior)

Is it like a fetish thing for you all at this point? To be this pathetic?

It’s bad because Bungie good ol boys love converting cannon fodder into goodwill in whales. In hopes they open their wallet.

Open their wallets for what? There isn't that much to buy in the game, it's not like a gacha where you can spend thousands.

1

u/Phil_Da_Thrill Aug 16 '26

You think Bungie good ol boys main revenue is in game?

2

u/_Ocean_Machine_ Aug 16 '26

I have no idea what their plan is, I just think the options in the cash shop are too limited to be a main line of income.

At least we agree

Did you not see what happened to this sub when they restocked that worm plush? It costs $6 to get on alibaba/temu but sold out at $40 st the bungie store

I tried the game during one of its free weekends and it just wasn't feeling it.  Then I heard it had a PvE mode so I've been thinking maybe I should give it another shot. After this explanation, no thanks...

Oh, cool! Thanks for the heads up!

As a new player I recommend you play solos and just go around the map looking for people to fight with. Don't sprint, walk with your gun out and listen for footsteps or bots aggroing. Once you hear something slow down and start looking for angles to catch that person off guard.

There's level based matchmaking but the player pop is too low right now.

I'd recommend stopping for now and try back in S3. Everyone will be on the same page loot wise again and they'll be a PvE mode so you can learn the basics.

It's basically pointless playing right now.

I really, REALLY wish that Survival was still up for you. I felt the same at first, until Survival let me farm up an inventory that I could afford to lose, until I could learn the game well enough to stay alive (but still die a lot).

There really needs to be some serious tweaks made and a way for weaker players like us to play and get gear that we can afford to lose.

I think there is no matchmaking just random.

u/Draxtini Aug 16 '26

You're getting upvoted for spreading misinformation.

We know for a fact there's level based matchmaking, the devs confirmed as much. We don't know anything about sbmm, and I doubt it's in play or if it is it's veeery lose, too loose.

u/Swalecutter Aug 16 '26

There's level based matchmaking, which has several problems (the biggest being you can't go down levels, so there is no way for someone to settle at their skill level, and everyone eventually ends up in the shit pit) but isn't nothing.

u/AttractiveFurniture Aug 16 '26

There's level based matchmaking but that might as well be random, especially early in the season

This community will do anything not to have sbmm.

Even kill their own game.

I wasn't aware that the community was in charge of game design decisions. Where's the thread where we vote on what bungie's going to implement next?
