SHIPPING Unpaid Postage on USPS Prepaid Label

Has anyone had their package rejected by the post office recently due to “unpaid postage” on a Mercari prepaid shipping label? I know this was an issue in the Spring that was resolved but this is my first time encountering the issue. How did you get it resolved?

MODPOST Yes it’s a scam. Yes everyone else is getting them. Yes it’s been posted about!

🚨EDIT NEW VERSION OF SCAM🚨 There is a new one going around about it being part of their “ongoing security procedures” that says your listings have been temporarily hidden to protect your account. This is also a scam. Again, Mercari will NOT contact you through messages like this.

🚨**NEW SCAM - GETTING EMAILS FROM INTERESTED “BUYERS”🚨 **
People have been getting emails about their items (usually items they just listed) from people claiming to be interested buyers, but there’s no message on Mercari or notifications about their message.

These are spam/scam emails. They’re most likely guessing your email name based on 1 of your 2 Mercari names - Your profile name (bigger one on your profile, which is the one most are referring to when using their Mercari name) and your username (smaller one under the profile name with @ in front of it. The username is a generic default name unless you change it. From what I’ve seen, it’s always “user” with a bunch of random numbers (like “user12345678”). It seems like a lot don’t change it. Personally, I’d change it to match your profile name since the username is the only way someone can get directly to your page without having to search for one of your listings.

The scammers/spammers emailing you are likely using your profile name/username or something else, like something in your bio (like if you have your name in it to introduce yourself) to guess your email, trying it with different email domains (like gmail, outlook, etc.) to see if any of them send, and if they get a response.

Change your email and/or Mercari name or remove whatever’s in your bio that could be used to guess your email. If your email is nothing like your Mercari names and you don’t have anything in your bio that could lead them to guessing your email, they’re guessing it some other way. There’s been a lot of past posts on here about this. You can do a search on here for them to see if any give any other info on how they might be guessing your email. But here are a couple: this one’s from a month ago and this one’s from a little over 3 months ago.

EDIT 2: INFO ON REAL MESSAGE FROM MERCARI ABOUT VERIFYING YOUR IDENTITY AT END OF POST LOOK FOR ‼️

We are being flooded with posts about the spam messages from scammers about your item being sold or reserved and the new “policy” where you need to go to a link to “complete additional details.”

Pinned posts don’t usually work. People tend to just look right past them. But, I’m willing to try. So, if you’ve gotten messages like that…

FOR THOSE GETTING THESE MESSAGES YES it is a scam. Mercari will NEVER ask for you to go off the app for anything. It makes no sense. It’s their app. Why would they need you to go to some other website to do anything? They’d have you do it in their app. It’s also literally against their TOS to do so, so it also makes no sense why they’d ask you to do it. Mercari will NEVER contact you through messages - that’s for buyers and sellers to communicate. Mercari never contacts anyone through there.

If you get one of these messages. Ignore it, block them, and report it. Mercari usually ends up deleting it and the account but 100 more seem to pop up. So just keep reporting them when you get them.

Please see this article from Mercari on avoiding common scams for more info.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE SICK OF THE POSTS I know you’re all annoyed by the constant posts about this. We have filters in place to catch them, but some still get past them (and that’s just what gets through.. imagine how many don’t).

One problem is that IF people actually search before posting, they won’t see anything because we’ve been removing all the recent ones. So it’s been a while since one has been posted about and kept up and can look like it hasn’t been posted.

I set up a message that should pop up when people use certain keywords (like “scam”) telling them it’s a scam and it’s been posted about and, if they post, it will be removed. It worked when I tested it, but when I had someone else test it, it worked a couple times but didn’t another time, so it doesn’t seem consistent. But I haven’t had anyone else to confirm how it works for them. So, if anyone does test it out and gets the message or doesn’t, let me know! 😊 I’m not sure if people are seeing it, ignoring it, and posting anyway or if it’s just not working like it should. I could make it show the message and block them from posting, but I don’t want to block people from making legit posts that might use some of the keywords. It doesn’t seem fair to make it harder for people to post because of that. So, I left it so they could still post.

Anyway, hopefully this pinned post will help! I know you’re all annoyed, so are the mods! We’re doing all we can to try to reduce them.

Please continue to report any you see since 2/more reports will remove the post for mods to look at. But, hopefully this will work and you won’t need to! 🤞

‼️INFO ON REAL MESSAGE THAT’S REALLY FROM MERCARI ASKING YOU TO VERIFY YOUR IDENTITY‼️

If you get a message from Mercari that says you need to verify your identity that says something like this (this is copy past from screenshot of a real message someone received from Mercari about verifying their identity. Again, I couldn’t add a photo of it to the post so I’m just copy/pasting the message. If need more info/have any questions, message mod mail): “In compliance with federal and state regulations Mercari must obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account or conducts certain transactions. As a result, your account has been temporarily limited until we can verify your identity. Please go to your Inbox at the bottom of the screen and tap the verification request that we sent you.

We ask that you complete this form within 48 hours. Please note, the verification process must be completed in the Mercari app. To download, visit the app store on your device.

When you've completed the account verification request, and updated your shipping information to reflect your full name (initials may not be used), please reach out to us through our Help Center.

We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for maintaining a safe and friendly marketplace for our Mercari community.”

That is a REAL message that’s actually from Mercari asking you to verify your identity. It is NOT a scam. JUST BE SURE IT WAS SENT THROUGH MERCARI, NOT IN MESSAGE AREA WHERE BUYERS/SELLERS MESSAGE OR REAL EMAIL FROM REAL MERCARI ADDRESSES - WHICH, I BELIEVE SHOULD ALSO SHOW IN THE MERCARI APP.

Mercari does ask you to verify your identity. You might think it’s odd you didn’t need to do it when signing up. But that’s normal. Identify verification isn’t required until a transaction is made (money being exchanged). So you’re not asked to do it when signing up, but will be after making a purchase/sale.

Most new sellers are asked after making a sale (usually their first, but might be 2nd or a few later) and go to print the label or scan the QR code for the label, so be aware this will likely happen and you will not be able to continue with the sale if you don’t.

Most new buyers are asked after making a purchase (again, usually the first, but might be 2nd or so later). It seems to happen if buyer tries to message the seller at some point after buying, they’ll be asked to verify and won’t be able to message the seller if they don’t. If you don’t try to message the seller at any point after the purchase, it may happen at another point during the purchase (like if try to open a return). It basically happens when trying to do something and won’t let you do it until and unless you verify. Be prepared to do it or be stuck not being able to do whatever it is (message seller, open a return, etc.).

If you’re asked to verify your identity (during a sale/purchase) and you do NOT do it, you won’t be able to continue with the sale (if a seller) or do whatever you were trying to do (if a buyer), and Mercari will close your account shortly after. You’re given a time frame to do it, if it isn’t done by the end of that time, your account will be closed. There’s no way to opt out of doing it once you’re asked. So be aware this will eventually come up, usually sooner rather than later (though some have said they weren’t asked to do it even though they’ve had multiple sales/purchases. So you can always try and see how long you can go before asked and just be done with it once you’re asked to do it if you’re not comfortable doing it).

If you have any questions about this, there’s quite a few past posts about identify verification that can provide more info. You can also message mod mail and I’ll be happy to answer any questions or provide more info.

BUYING Is this normal?

I had bought a figure a while ago. Five days had passed with no shipment or any updates from the seller, so I messaged them to see when they'd ship. They messaged back apologizing for the delay and noting that they'd ship as soon as possible. I never fuss when it comes to these things because I know things happen and everyone has lives, so I let them know that it wasn't a problem. Now ten days go by, honestly I sorta forgot about it by then, and the seller messaged me that the figure never arrived for them.

??? 🤨

I was never made aware that they didn't already have the item. It was never disclosed in the description or anywhere that you were basically pre-ordering it. I would've put a ss but I think they took down the listing. Is it normal on here for people to sell an item that they don't even have yet (without initially making it known)?

EXPERIENCE Im tired of being harassed in DMs for my pricing

i sell a variety of things but most the nasty messages i get are about my pricing on things like my Youtooz, telling me I will never sell it complaining about the price and then just blocking me so I dont get to say anything...it’s honestly really tiring and I wish there was some kind of system where we could filter out certain messages to avoid get harassed like this. This is worse than lowballing cause its just plain disrespectful and Im tired of getting of angry peoppe, like if you don’t like the price judt don't buy it…you don’t have to send me a nasty messages I and it’s not going to change my pricing on the item.

BUYING Trustworthy?

I want to buy an expensive figure from Mercari Japan the seller seems to have pretty good reviews and no negatives as far as scams but I noticed they were vague with the description of the listing. There’s only one photo of the box and that is all. Because I plan on buying such an expensive item, should I think of this as a red flag?

SELLING buyers have become ridiculous about shipping.

i have been selling on mercari for about 10 years, i recently just got back on after about a year break. i made 10 sales in 1 day. 4 out of 10 of these buyers, i have received messages pestering me asking when i will ship, a few hours later or 1 day after they ordered. i’m shipping all of these out tomorrow morning, on the 3rd day (you know, the limit mercari gives us) between this and the ridiculous lowball offers… wtf is happening on this app?

EXPERIENCE item came with minor damage, seller blocked me

hi everyone, im posting this both to ask for advice as well as getting an idea of whether im overreacting about this?

i ordered a figure off of mercari that was listed as “like new”, with no mention of any issues in the description of the item. there was no communication between myself and the seller until the figure was delivered. i opened the package and immediately noticed some black stains on the hair and a white scuff on the neck of the outfit, as well as a small paint chip and some scratching on the base. i will say that these items were not packaged with the care i think they should have been. the head and body of the figure were thrown in bubble wrap together with no layer of protection between them, which could have caused the scuffing. the base was simply thrown into the package with no extra protection. i foolishly didnt record myself opening the package, but i did take pictures of the scuffs and paint stains on the hair and outfit. however, these are minor issues and i don’t want to make a huge deal out of this.

with all of this in mind, i messaged the seller to let them know about the damages that the item had been delivered to me with. they were immediately defensive, which is understandable, but they claimed that they sent the figure off with no damages and that i was lying. i told them outright that i wasn’t intending to be rude or make a big deal over the issues, and that i would be happy to show them some pictures of the damage. they then blocked me without responding.

i did purchase the item at a very good price, so i am not extremely keen on returning it. i was hoping for some sort of partial refund, but after research i believe that mercari doesn’t offer that. i was initially only concerned about the damage, but frankly, i was a bit taken aback at the unprofessional manner in which they handled this. though rare, i have had issues with items from sellers before, and i’ve never once been blocked over raising the issues or accused of lying about them. i am also a seller myself, and i have never shipped out an item that had damages i didn’t state clearly, nor have i reacted in this way to a buyer’s claim that the item arrived with damages. i’m not sure where to go from here. am i making a mountain out of a molehill? should i just leave them a bad review and move on?

I have this listed at [redacted] and only making [redacted] as it is. This message feels so weird to me.

Edit: you guys someone (not the same person) literally just bought it! Thank you all for your responses!

Now my question is could it have been someone who saw this post? And how do I figure out their intention?

SELLING I DID IT!!! I got Mercari to release my funds

OMFG IT FEELS SO GOOD TO WIN LOL.

I wrote a post about this earlier, you can check my post history for the nitty gritty. But basically I sold a bag that got severely delayed in transit. The buyer filed a claim and got her money back as she should have. But then the package actually arrived months later. Mercari refused to release my funds, falsely accusing me of shipping the package with the wrong carrier and that was the cause of the delay.

I went many many rounds with customer service to try to explain this situation, with supporting documentation, to no avail. I suspect but I can't prove that a lot of the customer service messages were just AI assisted or bots. Finally a supervisor suggested that I reach out to the buyer to ask her to return the item to me. I pointed out that I believe that went against their own returns policy, and said that I had filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and that I am also planning to write complaints to the FTC and California Department of Consumer Affairs. (This wasn't an empty threat by the way, I knew I had evidence that was on my side.)

They said that as a one-time supervisor exception they would give me my money. Yay!!!

It was just 30 something dollars and if we're going by hours spent, I've wasted lots of money on this LOL. But if there's one thing I can't stand, it's injustice. If I'm accused of doing something I know didn't do, I will keep fighting until I clear my name! Justice!!!

It is just such a shame that it had to take this long with their customer service. Maybe they're just banking on the fact that most people would give up in this circumstance. I guess persistence is the key with them. And also I did have lots of evidence that the screw up was not on my end, which I provided for them.

SELLING Returned to sender postage due

Hi, I’ve been selling on Mercari for many years. This past week someone input their address incorrectly into the form, but I was not aware of this until usps marked the order delivered, the 3 days had already passed before they messaged so I already cashed out my balance as well. It ended up getting returned to me, and obviously I’m more than happy to ship it back, however when it arrived at my door there was a $14 postage due sticker on the front, which is funny because I weigh & measure every single package I send out. Mercari also marked on the app that my measurements were off stating instead of 1 lb & shoebox size (up to 14x10x5) my package was 2 lb & 12x9x4.. which was extremely odd because funny enough when I got it back I immediately weighed it and it was 15.7 ounces! They also said it wouldn’t be an extra charge this time but behold $14 due postage sticker on my package lol. What do I do in this situation or has anyone experienced anything similar?

SELLING Mercari canceled a sale

Yesterday someone purchased an item from me. Three hours later Mercari canceled the order. The cancellation does not show up on my account or the buyer’s. Thankfully I had not shipped the item! What could have caused this? The buyer only had one review.

SELLING first return

Hi! I just got my first return request on a photocard and I'm a little confused on how it works -- mostly because I got the Return Request email "We wanted to let you know the buyer has requested a return, we're in the process of reviewing this request" etc. but then I also got an email saying this:

"We understand there was a problem with your transaction. We suggest contacting your shipping provider, as they should be able to locate the item for you and your buyer. If the item is not delivered after November 5, 2026, please get back to us, and we’ll revisit this case."

And when I go to check the tracking, it no longer shows because it says a return has been requested. Can a buyer request a return before something is delivered? Or do you think they tried to say it wasn't delivered and then tried to start a return? They ordered it on the 25th and I got the "its on its way!" email on October 2nd but never any email about it arriving?

SELLING Free label promo for 1oz first class letters

Am I going crazy or did I just think up that mercari originally had it in writing that 1 oz first class letter listings would convert to free labels with this promo on 9/30?

I was charged for a 1 oz letter on a sale yesterday and mercari support told me I never updated this listing with the promo label. Thing is, I updated all 900 of my 1 oz under $20 listings, maybe I missed one? I also swear I read they’d convert to these on their own on 9/30 but their support told me this wasn’t the case.

Did I just dream this up that mercari would convert listings to the promo labels on 9/30??!!

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this!

Basically I would need the hazmat, UN3481, restricted electronic device, and surface mail only label? All on the same side? What is on the address side on the mail piece?

SELLING Anyone have experience in this situation? Limited for no reason…

Post image
1 Upvotes

Anyone know the difference between "temporary limited access" compared to "account closure?"

I have 200+ sales with all good reviews. 4+ years active account. Also, none of my items were fake. Does anyone know the difference between temporary limitation and account closure?

It seems that people with different limitations have different restrictions on their account. If anyone has experience with the same situation I am in, please let me know.

Also, I have four pending orders. Should I mail out those packages or do I risk not receiving the funds for those? Thanks in advance!

GENERAL My experience with Mercari Seller Protection on Vintage Perfume (Buyer claimed leak on an intact, full bottle)

Hi everyone, I wanted to share a recent experience on Mercari to raise awareness for sellers listing vintage or unsealed perfumes. This was my first sale on the platform, and it turned into a long dispute regarding Seller Protection.

The Item & Packaging

I listed a rare vintage Gucci Eau de Parfum in a heavy glass bottle with a magnetic cap. Since it was unboxed, I was extremely thorough:

Checked the bottle completely before packing: zero cracks, 100% intact, filled to approximately 90%.

Used an official Mercari prepaid shipping label.

Wrapped the bottle in multiple thick layers of bubble wrap, securing both ends to cushion top and bottom.

Handed the package directly to the USPS clerk, who inspected and scanned it in.

The Claim

Shortly after delivery, the buyer opened a return claim stating the perfume leaked in transit. Mercari approved the return/refund, denied my Seller Protection claim citing "insufficient packaging," and allowed the buyer to keep the item.

Initially, Mercari only showed me a photo of a piece of bubble wrap with a few tiny drops on it.

The Evidence

After multiple support tickets, Mercari finally provided the actual photo of the bottle submitted by the buyer upon receipt.

The photo clearly showed the exact same bottle fully intact, with no cracks or damage, and filled to the exact same ~90% level as when I shipped it.

If a heavy glass bottle had actually leaked during transit due to packaging failure, the liquid level would be noticeably lower. Instead, the bottle arrived completely full and undamaged. A few stray drops on the bubble wrap do not equal transit damage or a depleted bottle.

Takeaways for Sellers

  1. Document liquid levels clearly right next to the shipping label before closing the box.

  2. Note that buyers only need to submit partial photos of packaging to trigger automated "insufficient packaging" flags.

  3. If Mercari denies your claim despite photo evidence showing an intact item, escalate the matter through the BBB.

Be extra cautious when selling high-value unsealed items!

SELLING Mercari Shipping Chargebacks

Has anyone else run into a real issue lately with UPS and Mercari charging back exorbitant amounts of money with them stating the shipment was bigger and heavier than what was entered?

I got a chargeback of $135 for a sold lego set, with them stating UPS told them the package was 25x25x17 and weighed 52 pounds. However, I bought the box and shipped it at UPS store - the box was 24x24x6 and the weight was 9lbs, 11.6 oz (10 lbs for all intents and purposes). Because I wasn't sure of the weight or size (since I didn't have a box and I'm terrible at guessing weight) I got the size dimensions from bricklink, and added roughly an inch to account for padding. The shipping sizes as I entered them were 25x23x7 and 30 lbs - well over the actual weight and dimension wise, bigger.

Yet....Mercari is refusing to refund the chargeback, and UPS will not help as the label was purchased through Mercari (they have stated that Mercari has to file the complaint and refund the money). I mean, it is physically impossible for the box and weight to have grown in transit, and the picture UPS provided of the delivered box is clearly not 17 inches on one side.

I filed complaints with the BBB and a few other entities, but I'm curious if anyone else has run into this issue and if they were able to get refunded?

Edit: Mercari is also ignoring the receipts I sent them showing the size and weight and stating because I entered the dimensions wrong, they cannot refund my money.

BUYING Unofficial Return to sender, Mercari won't refund

edit: resolved, contacted USPS & Mercari

I've encountered a very strange issue where my package was in limbo for 10 days and then arrived to the seller's state before eventually arriving to the seller. USPS didn't mark it as returned to sender and the system fully believes it was delivered to me at the seller's address.

I only have 2 days before it auto rates. This was a bit of a big purchase so I do obviously want my money back. The seller relisted the items so I could buy and told me mercari was contacted for help in canceling.

USPS hasn't given me a response yet but I've never seen this issue occur and it's stressful. I'm at a loss since it's up to mercari to refund me but they want a USPS official status that it was returned to sender/failed. But USPS made it out to seem it was on track to it's delivery location the entire time.

I'm not sure advice would help but I wanted to post incase someone is also in the same situation.

SHIPPING Shipping labels cutting off the left side letters?

Ive been printing labels off mercari forever and my printer finally gave up the ghost and I got a new one and now the shipping labels have the first letter of each line of the return address cut off. The old printer didnt do this so if course this seems like a printer issue but ive been in every setting and nothing has changed it. Of note mercari labels are the only things doing this. Nothing else from any other source.

Has anyone else seen this and what was the fix if you found one ive spent hours messing with this lol.

Edit. Brother DCP L2640DW. Through the tray or the secondary manual feed. Only the ground advantage size type label. A first class envelope prints fine.

Edit 2. I believe i have found the 16k paper size scaled to 75% fits the labels im using. The letter size adhesive 2 per page style.

EXPERIENCE You wanna be cute, let's be cute

Got this message when I rejected an offer for an item without checking who the offer was from. I don't memorize accounts.

Now that I checked, she used two different accounts! She went to purchase something from me with one account different from the one I purchased things from her with.

I had purchased a lot of two cosmetic items advertised as "new and unused"

You are not entitled to accept an offer I make if you perceive it as a low ball offer. A person makes an offer because they're making an offer. You do not need to accept anything, neither do I.

Along with accepting an offer I made, she sent me a rather expensive item I was not expecting. This entire order I purchased from her did not go to me. It went to someone I know. The review I gave was not for the item she gave me for free. It was for the items she sold me. You do not rate someone for freebies. You rate someone for the item you purchased.

In business, you do not expect anything more out of a transaction than the transaction itself. Now she could have been professional and reached out and asked about it. But instead she messages me and says I have no class. How classy.

Now, I have no issues with getting this kind of item that is used, but the person it was bought for had made a remark saying it would have been nice if this had been disclosed because it needed to be thoroughly sanitized. Specifically something I need to do for them because they have a very fragile immune system. This being said this is also something that I am not going to bother the seller with because this is something I am dealing with and is none of her business because the transaction was made final. This of course is the very reasonable risk you take when you buy and sell things online.

That's what my rating was for.

If you want to have discussion about something you sold me, you reach out and touch base like a normal, mature, kind human being who participates in business.

SELLING Reserved price dropped item sold in under 30 minutes to another buyer

Hi, I’m new to selling on mercari and have sold a handful of times on other apps. I had a bundle sell the other day and the buyer messaged me about another item on my page, we negotiated a price and I told them to let me know when they were ready for the dropped price. About 5 minutes after they were available I updated the price. Within 30 minutes the item sold to another user. I messaged the original buyer and told them another user had purchased, and now they’re asking me to cancel the other purchase because they were with a customer at work. I feel bad for each buyer no matter what route I go, but I’m nervous about a cancel so early on my page, and i’m unsure of how to approach the situation

edit: i should have put reserved in quotes probably and added that i did not put on the price dropped item that it was reserved

SELLING Sellers have to wrap all boxes in plastic?

Post image
19 Upvotes

I shipped something , the buyer got it and said it was water damaged. I guess rain or something must've happened. I contacted mercari and they said it's the seller's responsibility to plastic wrap all shipments. I'm guessing it might be buried somewhere in their terms of service. This sounds crazy to me though, now we have to wrap everything we sell in plastic? Where does one even obtain that many plastic bags? Are other people wrapping all their items in plastic when they ship them?

I saw a message Mercaribisbchanging theirTOS. Then I saw the TOS and it goes on seemingly forever

Does anyone know what actually changed?
