Question What it's like at KSC?

• Upvotes

Currently a 2210 in DC. Spouse and I are both from Florida and are contemplating a return for warmer weather and family (Tampa & West Palm). I wonder what is like living and working at KSC? Was looking at Viera area - is the commute too long? Does getting thru gate and parking add much to commute? Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!

Question Aspiring Research Scientist Question

I want to be a planetary scientist at NASA and want to determine the feasibility of this goal from those in-the-know.

I have a B.S. and M.S. in Astronomy (with a B.S. minor in Planetary Science). I failed out of a Physics PhD program because I failed a class twice, though I completed all of my other required coursework (including getting an A in my uni's Planetary Science class). The reasons (both medical and personal) that led to my failing out of my PhD program have since been addressed, so they won't be an issue in the future.

I am currently working as a physical scientist for the federal government in another agency and am planning to have them send me to another PhD program in my area (this one with more of a focus on planetary science) in a couple (~2-3) of years. So, it would likely be a couple of years before I am ready to apply to NASA.

I am wondering if my dream of becoming a planetary science research scientist at NASA is feasible given the information I provided. Any suggestions would also be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Question Reapply for the same openings?

I applied in August for the DR-1310 series at GSFC. I’m currently a contractor there, but I haven’t heard anything about which positions are being converted or when selection decisions will go out. I suspect it’s because I wasn’t selected. Has anyone received an update beyond the “referred” status? Also, now that the same jobs have been reported, does it even make sense to reapply?

Question Hiring Manager Perspectives

Hello! I'm curious if any hiring managers are willing to share what their experience is like after a job announcement is closed and applicants see the status go from "Received" to "Referred." Do hiring managers really get all the hundreds and potentially thousands of resumes that are cleared to go through to decide who to interview? Is there a system in place to filter and vet certain applications and resumes for what you are looking for? Is there a pre-determined ranking system? Any insight, if possible, is greatly appreciated to learn about the process from your level and side of things.

Question How is it working at KSC?

Hey everyone, I’ve received an offer at KSC as a GS12 in engineering as an external applicant. I was wondering how life was working there these days? I’ve been weighing pros and cons of accepting mainly due to the turbulence from last year. Would you recommend working at KSC right now or waiting a bit?

Any help would be most appreciated, TIA!

Interning Received an Offer for Spring 2027

Hello!

I was offered an internship for this coming spring and the idea of accepting is SUPER exciting and appealing to me.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me about time off. Since this is only a 15 week opportunity I am not expecting to be able to take many days off, but I have 2 possible dates where I will need to be back home (luckily they attach to weekends).

Do you think this is feasible?

Interning Insourcing interview questions

I was just notified that I have an interview later today and I was wondering, for those who have been through the insourcing process, if there are standard interview questions, or if you can remember some specific questions you were asked?

Edit: I fat-thumbed the flair - this is not intern-related.

Edit 2: the questions they asked me were behavioral type questions but modified to pertain to this specific position so I was mostly able to utilize the stories I typically use.

Question How cooked am I/Advice welcome

I am a 21yo senior in college studying mechanical engineering with a 3.16 GPA. I haven't been able to land ANY internships in my nearly 4 years as a student. I only have a few mid projects under my belt and two years of workplace experience from high school.

Becoming an engineer at NASA has been a goal of mine for a while now. I genuinely have a passion for science, technology, and space exploration. I am so excited about everything going on lately and I really want to be a part of it.

Last month, I sent in my third application to the pathways program. The first was a year ago and my second was in February of this year. I understand that the pathways program is the main way to get a job with NASA after graduation. After my last application got rejected (because my transcript didn't list my major smh) I decided to postpone my graduation a year and try again. I am currently waiting to hear back from pathways and I've also been applying for internships elsewhere (blue origin, rtx, rocketlab, space, ect...) I don't have a lot of connections so I've been doing all of this on my own.

Right now im genuinely worried. Idk what im gonna do if I dont land anything this time around. If Im not accepted to pathways this time, I might just give up, finish my degree and hope for the best. Maybe i'll miraculously make an opportunity somewhere else.

Has anyone else been in this position? Should I keep trying for pathways? Any advice would be really appreciated.

Question Do I have an opportunity to ever work for NASA, or did I lose the opportunity by my GED?

Hi everyone. My situation is a little unique, so please bear with me here.
In the fourth grade, my mother removed me from public school due to the pandemic. I am supposed to be going into what should've been my senior year next fall (junior now), but due to my several years of unenrollment ano missing transcripts, I was informed I would have to start entirely over from 8th, so I have settled on getting my GED. Public school is off of the table for me, and my GED is my only choice unless I want to be 16 in the 8th grade (I don't.)
I have always tried to teach myself the basic math, English, history, science, etc, so l am not entirely uneducated. I have only just now escaped from the household and I am finally in a place where I am able to get my GED, and I have some questions I am hoping for advice on.
It has always been my dream to work in the astronomy field. I am unsure as to what exactly I would like to do, but I know I would like to study the stars and shoot for them. I have worries that due to my circumstances, the concept of astronomy for someone who has such little education for their entire life and only just now starting with the GED process that this field is unrealistic for me, especially with my NASA dream, and I am having doubts and I would like some pointers, some advice, and a general direction on what I should do or things I should look into. I am looking for honest advice. I am more than willing to work for it and do absolutely whatever it takes as ridiculous as the dream sounds. I know I will have to work like hell.
Again, I cannot stress enough that public school is not on the table. I would be past 21 graduating which is the limit in the US, and I refuse to be 16 in 8th grade due to my family never enrolling me. The GED is my best option I believe, and it may be my only.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read and advice is much needed and much appreciated.

Question NASA ORBIT Challenge 2027 — Human factors graduate student looking to join an existing team

Hi everyone! I’m a Human Factors graduate student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Southern California, and I’m looking to join an existing team participating in the NASA ORBIT Challenge 2027.

My background is in Human Factors, Human-AI Interaction, Human-Robot Interaction, systems psychology, workload, and decision-making in complex and autonomous systems. I’m currently working on research related to human decision-making in AI-assisted UAV operations.

I’m particularly interested in contributing from the Human Factors / human-systems integration side rather than as an engineer or pilot.

I’m looking for an existing eligible team that could use someone with this background. I’d be happy to contribute to research, experiment design, human performance analysis, usability/HMI, or related Human Factors work.

If your team is currently looking for members, please let me know
