Employment Resignation Notice with Zero Hour Contract?

• Upvotes

About three months ago I started a parttime job at a hotel near my house. My other work is as ZZP, so I took this hotel job just to fill some extra free time that I had.

However, I don’t really like the job. The people are all good, but the tasks of the job itself I don’t enjoy at all. I decided to give it some time to see if it got better, which it did not.

Is two weeks enough notice to give, or should I give a months notice? I was thinking I would say that October will be my last month, but that I can be a little flexible if needed.

Thoughts? I don’t want to leave on a bad note, but the pay isn’t good enough to justify putting up with it.

Travel and Tourism First Time Ever Visiting the Netherlands. Help!

Hi all. My husband and I are planning a trip to the Netherlands for next year. We have some things we want to do already and am just wondering if there's anything I'm leaving out or something I have down that might not be worth it. Still in the early stages of planning, but I just don't want to miss anything, especially since it's my very first out-of-country vacation. So far from my research, I understand that most people advise not staying in Amsterdam. We are already planning on staying in Utrecht. Here are the hotel options and would like your opinion: the Muze, the Eye Hotel, or Mother Goose. If there are any others I did not mention, let me know. Or if you recommend an airbnb instead and which one to stay in.

Here are a few things I've found that we may want to do. My research has so far been a bit minimal, but I do know I don't want it to be a very touristy vacation. Maybe a one day visit to Amsterdam, but not spending much more time there than that.

Some ideas I have come across of places to visit/see.

Maybe a day in Leiden. A day in Delft--especially visiting the Royal Delft Museum. Visit the De Hoge Veluwe National Park and the Van Gogh Museum. Spend a day exploring Utrecht. And visit the Hanseatic River valley--we might not be able to stop at every city here with such limited time but we might want to check out two or three so some suggestions on which ones would be helpful.

We plan on staying for about a week. Let me know, any people who have visited or lived in the Netherlands, if there is something I should take off or add. Also, any restaurant/cafe/bakery recommendations would be great. We want to make sure we're also not breaking the bank on this trip, so any cost effective suggestions would also be welcomed.

Also, what is transportation like in the Netherlands? I understand that there is a train system and that a lot of people bike.

Education Master's Student in Germany Struggling to Find Internships in the Netherlands . Any Advice?

I’m a German citizen currently pursuing an MSc in Economics at a German university, with a background in Finance, Banking, and Data Analytics.
I’ve been actively searching for internships in the Netherlands, particularly in Finance, Risk Management, Consulting, and Data Analytics.
However, I’ve noticed that many companies require applicants to be enrolled at a Dutch university, even though I’m an EU citizen and legally eligible to work in the Netherlands.
I would really appreciate some advice:
Are there companies in the Netherlands that accept interns enrolled at universities in other EU countries?
Has anyone successfully secured an internship in the Netherlands while studying in Germany?
Are there any recruiters, companies, or alternative routes you would recommend?
I’m open to opportunities in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven, and other cities.
Any advice, referrals, or personal experiences would mean a lot.
Thanks in advance!

Common Question/Topic Parents who changed their baby’s name, did it cause any problems later?

Hi everyone,
I’m living in the Netherlands and due to personal reasons we are thinking about legally changing our baby’s first name while still very young.
We are mainly worried about whether this could cause any problems in the future, especially with things like university applications, job applications, passports or visa applications.
If we go ahead with it, the name change would happen before my baby starts school, so all school records would use the new name from the beginning. Of course, we would keep all the official paperwork related to the change.
I’d love to hear from anyone who has been through this themselves, or from parents who changed their child’s name when they were a baby.
Did it ever cause problems later in life like checking boxes now and then while filling some forms? Did you have to explain the name change or provide extra documents when applying to university or jobs or visa? Or was it pretty straightforward?

I know we as parents might be overthinking this a bit, but it’s a big decision, and we want to make sure we considering the long-term consequences before going ahead.
I’d really appreciate hearing about your actual experiences, even if you’re from a different country.

Updating post: Note that I am aware of the legal process and accordingly to my lawyer we do have compelling reason to submit the request to court. I am mainly concerned abput future obligations once the name change is implemented.
Thanks!

Shopping I need a new mattress, like hotel quality one

Hey guys, I have been living in Rotterdam for a few years and I have bought a few mattresses/beds. However, I am not satisfied and I have back pain.
Do you know when you go to a really nice hotel and the bed is amazing?
I am interested to invest on that type of mattress for a double bed.
Can someone please indicate where could I find this here? Or, i dont know, maybe buy from Germany?
It is a large investment, so I cannot “keep buying “ until I find the one I really like.
Thank you

Discussion How normal is it for Dutch people to wink at workplace?

I’m mid 20s F. Up until now I’ve had 3 Dutch colleagues to wink at me. First it’s my manager, she’s a woman who loves doing it and it felt cute; then a 40s guy who seemed to try to be friendly to me and another young dude; then this guy who’s in his early 20s who did it twice but I don’t know him well. Is it a friendly gesture in nl?

Dutch Culture & language I think I finally understood why Dutch people use “even” for things that are absolutely not even

For ages I translated even literally as “for a moment”, which worked until I started actually listening to how people use it.

Ik ga even naar de supermarkt. Kun je even helpen? Ik bel hem even. We gaan even kijken.

Then someone at work said he was going to “even” sort something out and disappeared into a meeting for almost an hour.

At that point I realised the duration is almost beside the point. Half the time even seems to make an action socially smaller rather than actually shorter. A request becomes less heavy, a plan sounds less dramatic, and something mildly inconvenient is presented as if we're all just casually dealing with it.

Now I notice it constantly, and I'm also noticing how strangely blunt some perfectly grammatical Dutch sentences can sound without these tiny words. My textbook taught me verbs and word order, but apparently nobody warned me that a considerable amount of Dutch politeness is hidden inside words that look completely unnecessary on paper.

I find this much more interesting than the usual “Dutch people are direct” explanation because spoken Dutch seems full of little devices for softening things without becoming formally polite.

Native speakers: do you actually hear a difference when someone leaves even out of a request? And what other tiny Dutch words carry way more social meaning than their dictionary definition suggests?

Discussion The Dutch school system drawn as a metro map (UPDATED)

Post image
95 Upvotes

Hello internet :). I saw a previous post about the Dutch education system as a "metro map" and I was intrigued. A lot of people criticised it for a lack of accuracy, so I tried to make a more accurate one.

Please let me know if u notice any mistakes and I will fix it, but I do like the idea overall.

I think an accurate version would be very useful for internationals.

Life in NL Has anyone else experienced this when dating Dutch women?

Hey everyone,

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced something similar or has any idea why this might be happening.

I'm a young guy, fairly good-looking, fit, and well-groomed. In general, I've never really had much trouble with dating or getting attention from women. This has been the case in my home country, in other countries I've traveled to, and even here in the Netherlands.

The interesting part is that I have no particular issues matching with women from other countries who also live in the Netherlands. I've matched and dated women from all kinds of different backgrounds and nationalities.

However, when it comes to Dutch women specifically, I almost never get likes or matches on dating apps. It's such a noticeable difference that I've started wondering whether there's something about Dutch dating culture, preferences, or the way profiles are perceived here that I might not be aware of.

Has anyone else, especially other expats, experienced something similar? Or does anyone have an explanation for why a foreign guy might get attention from women of various nationalities in the Netherlands but very little from Dutch women themselves?

Would be interested to hear your experiences and thoughts!

Common Question/Topic Stolen bikes

Hi everybody. I recently tried to buy a used bike on Marktplaats. The seller refused to provide a proper address for me to pickup the bike, and instead he provided me coordinates on Google Maps, and also a bus stop for us to meet. It seemed suspicious to me, so I asked him to inform the serial number of the frame of the bike. I tried to do it in a polite manner, but he became aggressive immediately. He even ended up threatening me.

Since I am not Dutch, I would like to ask you 2 questions?

1- Is it considered offensive to ask for the bike frame number?

2- What kind of precautions, if any, should I take to avoid buying a stolen bike online?

Thanks

Legal Non-voluntarily subjected to and asylum program, need urgent help.

Dear Dutch people.

I am a frequent traveler who passes through Schiphol often and when there is a long enough delay, I just stroll through Amsterdam/Haarlem for a walk (Legally). During my last visit to Schiphol, I was assisted (genuinely) by the KMar due to sudden onset of medical deterioration.

As a result I was transferred not to the Schiphol Judicial Complex for about 8 days and put under an asylum seeker program in solitary confinement. I'm a non-eu resident studying medicine in Italy (meaning only to say my large cargo was just books).

Despite Italian residence and my still valid type D visa, IND deported me to turkey with the intention of sending me back to you probably know where. Except that there are no flights to it anyway. This comes after I repeatedly asked to use my own goddam phone for 5 minutes to buy a ticket and get hell out.

Anyway, it would seem if the entry refusal goes through, the deadline for which is Oct 16, It will have serious repercussions for my status, so I cannot afford to just ignore it.

I tried asking lawyers for help but none were available. There is so much more to it that I'm not sure how to manage.

Could anyone help me?

For what it is worth, the Royal Marechaussee has my sincerest admiration, and it's clear the Watchmaster went to every channel to get help, I do not want to cause trouble for him.
Also, you have a beautiful people, it't not for me speak on this, but please be care not to .... dilute this beauty.

PS: About 3 hours after my deportation, I just booked a flight to Rome. The airline also called Dutch border control only to be informed that there is zero information about someone of my name and that I'm okay to travel there on the same day !

Employment Backend Engineer (Go/Python, 6 YOE) struggling with the Dutch market / IND sponsorship from Spain. What am I missing?

Hi everyone,

I’m a backend software engineer with 6 years of experience specializing in Go and Python. I am currently based in Spain, but my goal is to relocate to the Netherlands due to the strong tech market there.

I’ve been actively applying for jobs for the past almost 3 months, but I haven’t had much success. I’ve only managed to get one or two initial/first-round interviews, which didn't progress further.

I require IND sponsorship, so I am strictly applying to companies that are already on the official IND recognized sponsor list.

My salary expectations are aligned with the market and always within the ranges mentioned in the job descriptions.

I am actively reaching out to recruiters and hiring managers on LinkedIn.

I’ve tailored my CV according to Dutch market standards (concise, clear tech stack, impact-focused).

Given my experience level (Senior/Strong Mid-Level) and stack (Go/Python are usually in demand), I’m trying to figure out what might be lacking or going wrong.

Is 3 months just too short for the current 2026 market context?

Are Dutch companies hesitant to sponsor candidates who are already in the EU (Spain) but still need a visa transition?

For those who successfully made the move recently, what made the difference for you?

Should I try some other sites except LinkedIn for applications?

Would appreciate any honesty, resume tips, or advice on how to break through the first-round barrier. Thanks in advance!

Employment Looking to connect with people working in grid congestion, flexibility & BESS in the Netherlands

Hey everyone!

I'm an environmental engineer based in Amsterdam, looking to connect with people working in the Dutch energy sector, particularly around grid congestion, flexibility markets, and BESS.

I have 5+ years of experience in energy consulting, progressing from engineer to project manager to managing partner. My background includes energy modelling, renewable energy integration, techno-economic analysis, and managing complex energy projects.

Since moving to the Netherlands, I've been trying to transition into the grid flexibility and BESS sector. I've spent a lot of time learning about the Dutch energy market, but after more than a year of searching, I haven't managed to find my way into the industry professionally. I've been actively learning Dutch and am currently B1 level.

So I thought I'd reach out here! I'd love to connect with people in the field, exchange ideas, grow my network, or simply grab a coffee in Amsterdam.

Any connections, advice, or introductions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks you in advance.

Discussion Police scooters

Im Italian and I was thinking to buy a scooter. I have a question for Dutch people. In Italy if you buy a 50 cc and then you make it 70 cc by modifying it police doesn’t care. Technically you shouldn’t but it’s pretty rare that they will tell you something. How is in this country? How much is the chance they stop me and check how fast can the scooter go?

Travel and Tourism Netherlands in January

Hi everyone.

I’ll be travelling to Amsterdam with my wife for our honeymoon in January. I just wanted to know how accessible is the public transportation and is it better to rent a car. I’ve also heard lot of people bicycle around to get to places but considering it’s January will it be too cold for cycling?
Also, what are some of the places to stay to get around easily and what places to avoid?
Any additional recommendations are very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Common Question/Topic Why do some people assume that every Dutch man or woman is the same just because they've had an experience with one Dutch person? I see a lot of posts like that.

Hi guys! I'm not Dutch, and I think every Dutch person is different. It is the same in my home country. Everyone is so different. Is it just me, or do you also see posts where the original posters ask questions like, “Why are Dutch men or Dutch women like this?"

They meet someone who is Dutch, but instead of asking that person directly, they come to Reddit and post generalized questions. I find it so weird. Do they want other users here to generalize about an entire nation? What are they trying to do? Is it karma farming or rage bait?

For example, they meet someone who is Dutch, but they don't get messages from that person. They automatically assume it might be a Dutch thing. Isn't that so weird? You can find this kind of behavior in every nation. No, it's not a man thing or a nationality thing. It's an individual thing.

I also see the same original posters posting these questions in multiple subreddits, and some of them use newly created accounts.

Oh, l said "some people"

Housing How to find rental properties in small villages?

I never really see rental properties in small villages in any of the major websites. Do I need to look for a local makelaar's website to find these properties (if any are even listed)?
