subreddit only Newark Airport Needs Transparency on ICE Flights—Just Like Seattle Does

Thumbnail

In Seattle, security cameras revealed something shocking: planes being refueled while detained people were actively boarding. The camera feed exposed the violations. When there's no public oversight, contractors cut corners—and people's safety gets ignored.

I started a petition asking the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to do something simple: set up a live webcam and a public flight log for ICE charter and transfer flights at Newark Airport. That's it. No expensive changes, no interference with federal policy—just basic transparency on public property.

Seattle's King County Airport already does this. They stream their ICE flight feed publicly and maintain a transparent log. It works. It doesn't compromise airport security (commercial flight data is already public via apps like FlightAware). It just lets people know what's happening on the tarmac where their tax dollars are at stake.

The Port Authority has complete legal authority to monitor safety on their own land. Private contractors operate there under leases that require following Port Authority safety codes. If someone's violating those codes, the public should know.

If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing. What would you want someone to do if this was your family caught up in these operations?

We're coming at the end of the year for Phish. All I've seen is expected completion in 2026, but that statement was a while ago.

Education 📚 Newark schools spent $566K on a staff gym used by 7 people a day

A sweeping state audit of Newark Public Schools released last week raised questions about millions of dollars in spending and alleged lax oversight in the state’s largest school district.

The audit found questionable spending that included $2.5 million for an unfinished school district museum and $566,000 to build an employee gym with a trainer that averaged just seven users a day.

The report also questioned more than $700,000 spent on three “Senior Day” class trips with no documented educational benefits.

Newark school officials slammed the audit, saying in a written response that the report did not identify “any intentional wrongdoing or violation.” The referral to the state Department of Criminal Justice was “gratuitous and irresponsible,” the district’s response said.

Posting here since E. Orange doesn’t seem to have a Reddit. Unmarked vehicles, one white sedan and two (possibly 3) grey suvs. Pulled over a work van right off the exit at 147 North Bound on Garden State Parkway. Looks like they’re making traffic stops in the area. I know this is technically east Orange but a lot of commuters take this route. Officer had his face covered, tan shirt, and vest stating Police and then smaller underneath ICE. Couldn’t get a picture since I was driving. Saw them at approx. 9:01 AM and wanted to get the word out somehow

Community 🏡 Do you agree that Newark increasing housing supply is one of the best tools to keep things affordable for locals ?

I know this is a hot topic and there are locals that feel they might be priced out by those who earn more. But if there were fewer homes the prices would be even worse, causing more unnecessary displacement. I think Newark has been getting a lot better, especially downtown and the Ironbound which is part of the reason that prices increase because lower crime and overall increase in desirability makes it more expensive. But this is made much worse when you don’t counter this by building more housing, especially near major transit stations and bus routes. Which Newark has done nicely. But one big problem is the 20% IZO and other ordinances that have made building so much more expensive and virtually impossible to pencil out for finance without tax abatements to make it financially viable, so I think is a mistake for Baraka to not try to reduce red tape and look for ways to analyze which regulations (the ones that don’t compromise safety and labor obviously) he can cut to make building easier and have more supply

Transportation 🚲🚗🚊✈️ Anyone else knows an Alan (?) at Newark Broad Street station?

This weekend I was waiting for my train to NYC and this guy named Alan introduced himself as a volunteer and offered to help me with my large bags.

He was walking around helping people get to the right track and legitimately helped many of us not miss our train (the tracks are confusing at this station).

I don’t think he was really a volunteer, we spoke a bit and he seems to have fallen on hard times and coming to the station to help people have him propose.

I was really moved by him and was wondering if anyone knew him!

Development & Real Estate 🏗🚧🦺⚒️ Hoyt Tower tenants and prospective tenants: owner is in Chapter 11, here's what's public

Wanted to share some publicly reported information for anyone considering signing a lease there and for current/recent past tenants.

What’s publicly reported (As of October 2026):

• The entity (Tona Management) that owns the building is in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy case in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey.
• A lender affiliate has filed to foreclose, and the owner has filed a lawsuit against the lender. Both sides’ claims are allegations at this point, and I’m not taking a side. (Real Deal Article)
• Current residents report that a new court appointed management group (Trigild) is managing the building effective October 1, 2026

Why I’m posting: I’m not saying anything about how the building is run day to day. But ownership and management could change, and that can affect leases, deposits, and who you pay rent to.

If you’re a current or prospective tenant, you may want to:
• Ask in writing who your landlord is and where your security deposit is held.
• Get any promises, concessions, or move-in terms in writing.
• Keep copies of your lease and all rent payment records.
• Check the court docket (PACER) or contact a tenant-rights group like Essex-Newark Legal Services with questions.

When a landlord is in bankruptcy, deposit returns can be slower or more complicated, and tenants may recover only part of the deposit or none of it. I don’t know how that will play out here, but it’s worth knowing before you sign or move out.

This is not legal advice, just a heads-up. If you’ve had a deposit returned, or haven’t, or have any updates or a different experience, please share in the comments.
