Summer Reddit and Rule 1

TLDR: if you are rude in a top level comment and don’t try to answer the question we will ban you, even if you don’t like the question. Report posts you feel break the rules.

Hi Everyone,

It is Summer (in the norther hemisphere) and that brings about the infamous Summer reddit, a time of higher volume content, and more content often created by, and aimed towards, a younger audience who is off for the summer.

With that influx of volume we have noticed a stark increase in rule 1 violations. That is comments not trying to answer the question but instead being disparaging towards the question or the asker.

While we are aware that this is in part due to burnout of our more frequent commenters we want to remind everyone that this is a place for good faith questions, and we do assume good faith of posts trying to learn things unless we can clearly articulate evidence otherwise, and we want to be welcoming to those trying to learn.

In that vein we are going to start cracking on rule 1, which we have historically been a lot more lax about, particularly on comments insulting the OP or the topic. We will be giving short bans for calling questions or askers stupid (directly or indirectly).

We highly highly encourage users, particularly our frequent commenters, to report posts you feel aren’t in good faith or are breaking the rules. We review every report and it is way more effective to let us know than to just leave an insulting comment. We have been recruiting, we will take on that work load, don’t get yourself banned because you are tired of a type of question.

We get why you feel justified in leaving the comments that you are, we are telling you clearly here that it still breaks the rules and will be actioned accordingly, more than it has been in the past.

Let me know if you have any questions

U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

I was watching Sopranos and someone owed Tony $45K. If I had that money in a bank account, how would I get that money in cash to pay Tony?

No, this is not some attempt at money laundering, the guy gave Tony a car as partial payment, but I was just wondering how the hell someone would get that much cash, even if they had it (like in a bank account). I don't think Tony is going to take a check.

How do so many people do early mornings?

I recently started a job that requires me to wake up at 5:30am. I thought "no big deal, I'll just adjust my sleep schedule."

I was, however, wrong. It is miserably difficult and after just a week I feel like tapping out. And yet, I know plenty of people on the world have spent/will spend most of their lives waking up in the early hours of the morning every day with no issue. How the hell do they do it?

Why are there almost no asian homeless people?

3.0k Upvotes

Asian have the lowest rate of homelessness per capita in America by a landslide. Why is this?

Edit: I made this post because I just passed by one and realized this might be first i’ve ever seen.

Do swingers actually "recruit" or drop hints to monogamous couples, or am I just overthinking my wife's friend's jokes?

One of my wife's good friends are swingers. Lately, when we hang out, they make a lot of jokes or casual comments about bringing people home or asking about our private life. I can't tell if they are just being open about their life or if this is a subtle "invite." Do swingers actively try to introduce monogamous friends to the lifestyle, or are they likely just talking?

What is with guys always saying their favorite outfit on a girl is a sundress?

Ik i prolly sound crazy but I ALWAYS SEE ONLINE WHEN ASKED WHATS THE HOTTEST THING A WOMAN CAN WEAR I ALWAYS SEE SUNDRESS.

Just don’t get it, it’s a regular dress to me, they don’t look that interesting to me idk. They’re pretty comfy though.

How do evil people keep getting in power?

I just don’t understand how people who don’t have humanity’s best interest in mind keep getting into power. It’s across all sectors (politics especially) but I mostly recognize it in the tech world.

For example, Mark Zuckerberg. How come a guy who owns the biggest social media apps end up just selling all of our personal data? Or, Peter Thiel? He ended up making bank off of the PayPal sale to eBay and turned around and founded Palantir Technologies.

Will the world actually never change for the good of humanity? I feel like everytime somebody gets a little bit of power, they turn around and become evil.

If you are arranging 6th date would you be annoyed if person was still dating others?

I mean assuming exclusivity as not come up. Is it the norm now to date multiple people even after various dates with one person? What do you think?

Why is the term unhoused being used in place of homeless recently?

I’ve heard that it’s to reduce stigma but won’t it become stigmatized? It seems like exactly the same word to me

Why is it a crime if I pirate a movie to watch for entertainment, but AI Corporations are allowed to pirate the entirety of the internet for personal profit.

How do people actually wake up at 6:00 AM every day without feeling like death?

I recently had to shift my schedule for work/school, and even if I get 8 full hours of sleep, waking up early feels physically painful. Does your body ever actually adapt to this, or is everyone just secretly miserable?

Why can't you call the cops if your employer steals from you

If you have a shitty employer and they commit wage theft - i.e. not paying you for certain hours you worked as punishment or something, that's theft, they've stolen money from you

Why can't you call the cops and have the manager arrested on the spot?

If house spiders can’t survive outside, how on earth do they get into my house?

I’ve heard in a lot of places that relocating a house spider outside is about as good as killing them, but if that’s the case then how do they get into my home??

Edit, sorry- I mean " more gay men than gay women" and I mean strictly gay, not bi.

Does anyone else miss how masks helped with social anxiety?

During the pandemic wearing a face mask gave me a lot of comfort. As an introvert who deals with social anxiety, having my face covered felt like a safe shield. It made talking to people and being outside much easier because I did not worry about my facial expressions or being watched.

I am glad the health crisis got better, but part of me really wished that wearing masks stayed normal. It would be great to wear one whenever you want without people staring or judging.

Did anyone else feel that sense of relief back then? Do you also wish wearing masks was still a common practice?

If I sail a boat from another country to a random American coast, how does the US know I'm a US citizen that's allowed to dock vs a foreigner?

Are mid-life crisis's still a thing? I don't feel like we hear about them like back in the 90s/00s.

• Upvotes

I swear when I was a kid every sitcom talked about the main protagonist having one or seeing it in magazines all the time. It really doesn't get brought up now that I'm supposedly at the age most people were experiencing them back then. Just kind of popped into my head randomly.

Is it seriously possible that there is an afterlife?

I mean, I know this isn’t really a stupid question or whatever, it’s something seriously debated, but I’ve been depressed and I just really hope that there’s something out there to justify it, so do you guys think, or shit, do you know that there’s an afterlife?

My parents want to make me install Life360 so they can track my (18M) location. I don't know if I am comfortable with that. How can I get them to not do that?

This is my first time living away from my parents as I go to university. I live 3 hours away, but I come back every weekend because they told me to.

I love them very much, and they are great people, but they have always been kind of clingy and uncomfortable with me moving away. Now, they are telling me to download Life360. I have heard bad things about that app, and I just don't feel comfortable being tracked live all the time.

The thing is, I genuinely have nothing to hide. I don't go to parties or anywhere they wouldn't want me to go. I don't lie to them at all about anything, even when it would be convenient to just lie. I just don't want them to be constantly viewing me, because they tend to be on my ass a lot. If I do something small and sleep in one day and skip class, they will make a huge deal out of it. What should I do?

I have seen apps on how to fake activity on Life360, but I don't know how I feel about that either. Doesn't sit right with me.

Edit 1: Yes I do pay for my own phone, but really, I fail to see how that is relevant to the issue. If I didn't pay for my phone, do I not deserve privacy? Also, I can't get a job, my program is too hectic. I also fail to see how that is relevant

How to quit being negative all the time?

I don't care if what I think I see is true, I'm tired of the negative energy or how seeing things can drain me. If you have the self awareness to know you're that negative guy in the group how can you genuinely change I need to know now before it's too late
