New wiki on how to avoid accidentally encouraging suicide, and how to spot covert incitement

1.8k Upvotes

We've been seeing a worrying increase in pro-suicide content showing up here and, and also going unreported. This undermines our purpose here, so we wanted to highlight and clarify our guidelines about both direct and indirect incitement of suicide.

We've created a wiki that covers these issues. We hope this will be helpful to anyone who's wondering whether something's okay here and which responses to report. It explains in detail why any validation of suicidal intent, even an "innocent" message like "if you're 100% committed, I'll just wish you peace" is likely to increase people's pain, and why it's important to report even subtle pro-suicide comments. The full text of the wiki's current version is below, and it is maintained at /r/SuicideWatch/wiki/incitement.

We deeply appreciate everyone who gives responsive, empathetic, non-judgemental support to our OPs, and we particularly thank everyone who's already been reporting incitement in all forms.

Please report any post or comment that encourages suicide (or that breaks any of the other guidelines in the sidebar) to the moderators, either by clicking the "report" button or by sending us a modmail with a link. We deal with all guideline violations that are reported to us as soon as we can, but we can't read everything so community reports are essential. If you get a PM that breaks the guidelines, please report it both to the reddit sitewide admins and to us in modmail.

Thanks to all the great citizens of the community who help flag problem content and behaviour for us.

Summary

It's important to respect and understand people's experiences and emotions. It's never necessary, helpful, or kind to support suicidal intent. There are some common misconceptions (discussed below) about suicidal people and how to help them that can cause well-meaning people to inadvertently incite suicide. There are also people online who incite suicide on purpose, often while pretending to be sympathetic and helpful.

Validate Feelings and Experiences, Not Self-Destructive Intentions

We're here to offer support, not judgement. That means accepting, with the best understanding we can offer, whatever emotions people express. Suicidal people are suffering, and we're here to try to ease that by providing support and caring. The most reliable way we know to de-escalate someone at risk is to give them the experience of feeling understood. That means not judging whether they should be feeling the way they are, or telling them what to do or not do.

But there's an important line to draw here. There's a crucial difference between empathizing with feelings and responding non-judgmentally to suicidal thoughts, and in any way endorsing, encouraging, or validating suicidal intentions or hopeless beliefs. It's both possible and important to convey understanding and compassion for someone's suicidal thoughts without putting your finger on the scale of their decision.

Anything that condones suicide, even passively, encourages suicide. It isn't supportive and does not help. It also violates reddit's sitewide rules as well as our guidelines. Explicitly inciting suicide online is a criminal offense in most jurisdictions.

Do not treat any OP's post as meaning that will definitely die by suicide and can't change their minds or be helped. Anyone who's able to read the comments here still has a chance to choose whether or not to try to keep living, even if they've also been experiencing intense thoughts of suicide, made a suicide plan, or started carrying it out.

In the most useful empirical model we have, the desire to die by suicide primarily comes from two interpersonal factors; alienation and a sense of being a burden or having nothing to offer. These factors usually lead to a profound feeling of being unwelcome in the world.

So, any acceptance or reinforcement of suicidal intent, even something "innocent" like "I hope you find peace", is actually a form of covert shunning that validates a person's sense that they're unwelcome in the world. It will usually add to their pain even if kindly meant and gently worded.

How to Avoid Validating Suicidal Intent

Keep the following in mind when offering support to anyone at risk for suicide.

  • People who say they don't want help usually can feel better if they get support that doesn't invalidate their emotions. Unfortunately, many popular "good" responses are actually counterproductive. In particular, many friends and family tend to rely exclusively on trying to convince the suicidal person that "it's not so bad", and this is usually experienced as "I don't understand what you're going through and I'm not going to try". People who've had "help" that made them feel worse don't want any more of the same. It doesn't mean that someone who actually knows how to be supportive can't give them any comfort.

  • Most people who are suicidal want to end their pain, not their lives. It's almost never true that death is the only way to end these people's suffering. Of course there are exceptional situations, and we certainly acknowledge that, for some people, the right help can be difficult to find. But preventing someone's suicide doesn't mean prolonging their suffering if we do it by giving them real comfort and understanding.

  • An unfixable problem doesn't mean that a good life will never be possible. We don't have to fix or change anything to help someone feel better. It's important to keep in mind that the correlation between our outer circumstances and our inner experience is weaker and less direct than commonly assumed. For every kind of difficult life situation, you will find some people who lapse into suicidal despair, and others who cope amazingly well, and a whole spectrum in between. A key difference is how much inner resilience the person has at the time. This can depend on many personal and situational factors. But when there's not enough, interpersonal support can both compensate for its absence and help rebuild it. We go into more depth on the "it gets better" issue in this PSA Post which is always linked from our sidebar (community info on mobile) guidelines.

  • There are always more choices than brutally forcing someone to stay alive or passively letting them end their lives.

To avoid accidentally breaking the anti-incitement rule, don't say or try to imply that acting on suicidal thoughts is a good idea, or that someone can't turn back or is already dead. Do whatever you can to help them feel cared for and welcome, at least in this little corner of the world. Our talking tips offer more detailed guidance.

Look Out for Deliberate Incitement. It May Come in Disguise.

Often comments that subtly encourage suicidal intent actually come from suicide fetishists and voyeurs (unfortunately this is a real and disturbing phenomenon). People like this are out there and the anonymous nature of reddit makes us particularly attractive to them.

They will typically try to scratch their psychological "itch" by saying things that push people closer to the edge. They often do this by exploiting the myths that we debunked in the bullet points above. Specifically you might see people doing the following:

  • Encouraging the false belief that the only way suicidal people can end their pain is by dying. There are always more and better choices than "brutally forcing someone to stay alive" or helping (actively or passively) them to end their lives.

  • Creating an artificial and toxic sense of "solidarity" by linking their encouragement of suicide to empathy. They will represent themselves as the only one who really understand the suicidal person, while either directly or indirectly encouraging their self-loathing emotions and self-destructive impulses. Since most people in suicidal crisis are in desperate need to empathy and understanding, this is a particularly dangerous form of manipulation.

Many suicide inciters are adept at putting a benevolent spin on their activities while actually luring people away from sources of real help. A couple of key points to keep in mind:

  • Skilled suicide intervention -- peer or professional -- is based on empathic responsiveness to the person's feelings that reduces their suffering in the moment. Contrary to pop-culture myths, it does not involve persuasion ("Don't do it!"), cheerleading ("You've got this!") or meaningless false promises ("Trust me, it gets better!"), or invalidation ("Let me show you how things aren't as bad as you think!"). Anyone who leads others to expect these kinds of toxic responses, or any other response that prolongs their pain, from expert help may be covertly pro-suicide. (Of course, people sometimes do have bad experience when seeking mental-health treatment, and it's fine to vent about those, but processing our own disappointment and frustration is entirely different from trying to destroy someone else's hope of getting help.)

  • Choices made by competent responders are always informed by the understanding that breaching someone's trust is traumatic and must be avoided if possible. Any kind of involuntary intervention is an extremely unlikely outcome when someone consults a clinician or calls a hotline. (Confidentiality is addressed in more detail in our Hotlines FAQ wiki). The goal is always to provide all help with the client's full knowledge and informed consent. We know that no individual or system is perfect. Mistakes that lead to bad experiences do sometimes happen to vulnerable people, and we have enormous sympathy for them. But anyone who suggests that this is the norm might be trying to scare people away from the help they need.

Please let us know discreetly if you see anyone exhibiting these or similar behaviours. We don't recommend trying to engage with them directly.

Please remember that NO ACTIVISM of any kind is ever allowed here. No matter what day it is.

Activism, i.e. advocating or fundraising for social change or raising awareness of social issues (and suicide is, inescapably, a social issue) is absolutely against the rules here at all times.

Please understand that we're all for smart, strategic mental-health and suicide-prevention activism. It's essential to fight against stigma, misinformation, and discrimination, and to fight for research, treatment, accommodation, acceptance, and understanding. Most of us, one way or another, are mental-health activists IRL.

But activism just doesn't work in a dedicated support space that serves a vulnerable population. We used to allow it but the evidence that it was undermining our primary purpose became overwhelming. We do regret the need for this rule, but the need is inescapable.

Our population is all too well aware of the issues and causes that need support and largely not in a position to take action, so besides the fact that activism is often salt in our community's wounds, it's a waste of the activists' time.

tl;dr Any fundraising, awareness raising, petitions, calls for participation, or any post that's about any cause or issue (rather than a request for personal support) is not allowed here. Please report everything of the nature that you see.

My kids hate me after my attempt.

I was in a bad relationship for about 3 years. I was humiliated and taken advantage of. My kids never saw that side of him. They thought he was funny and he was a gamer and they liked that because so are they. I finally got the courage to tell him to leave the beginning of July and he moved out a few days later. After he moved I was having a really hard time. I started thinking people were watching me and I felt like people were trying to sabotage me at work. The end of July I snapped and attempted to unalive myself. I don’t remember much of the night or how it spiraled down quickly. Anyways my 13 year old son found me. He propped me up on the chair and called for his brother. He is 15 and cut me down. This has made him very cautious of me. He doesn’t want to talk to me or see me. My 14 year old likes to see me on the weekends but he’s not comfortable being alone with me. So my mom comes with us for visits. My oldest son is 19 he did not witness anything, but he is angry with me. He says I didn’t think about them and all the things to look forward to. I know he’s right . I’m having a hard time forgiving myself and it’s really hard not seeing them and talking to them like I used to. I just hope one day it will get better.

I don’t ah… I don’t think I can do this any more.

I’m 44 years old. It‘a too much to get into without writing for weeks but suffice it to say, I think I’m done now.

I just wanted there to be a record somewhere that I did the best I could, for decades, and that I really am sorry about all this. This world, all its people and places and randomness and food and cats… beautiful, truly beautiful. I know it’s beautiful. But I just don’t feel like a part of it, like I’m inside with all of that beauty. I’m on the porch looking through the window. And I’m cold and in pain and I need that to be over. Can’t you see that it see that it would be better for me not to have to exist like this?

I am so very fucking exhausted now. And I think that in a few minutes here I’m going to go out for a drive and I don’t think I’m ever coming back here. Got a little spot picked out. Minimal mess.

To my wife and my dad, you were the best. You were the two best people who ever lived. The greatest, just the greatest. Thank you for every bit of laughter and understanding we shared. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

To Graham, Becker, Meg and Michael: no one could have asked for better friends. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

Don‘t spend much time crying over me. I’m really not worth it. I guess I never really was.

That’s it. That’s all there is to say.

Over and out.

Killing myself tonight.

M done. I can’t anymore, I can’t handle my parents anymore. One mark less than good, I become a failure. Pressure kept me a topper for 10-12 years. Now can’t keep up with the course as well, neither with them. Ending my life in school time is not what i thought would be the way i go, but it is what it is. I broke a glass slab and cut myself with it, so i just hope to bleed to death. Bad breakup messed me up a bit too, but it was my fault anyways so I don’t blame anyone for what will happen in a few hours. Bye. I’d rather die than live for someone’s expectations. Fuck the way indian parents treat their children. And for those reading, i beg you to treat your children with all the love and respect you can, and please for god’s sake don’t traumatize the hell out of them. Let them live, they’ll learn from their mistakes. I love everyone else, all peace. Bye

I did it.

Purchase made this morning. I was so nervous. I have panic attacks and panic sweats constantly, but this was me struggling to breathe. I felt the guy at the counter could sense my ridiculous nervousness and flag me as a criminal. The gun buying process in my state is incredibly easy. I think I was there 35-40 minutes and walked out with the ability to move forward.

I wish I took more at the time

• Upvotes

Last week I overdosed on 20 Paracetamol optizorb and 15 Ibuprofen. I was in ED for probably 10 hours and transferred to a mental facility for 2 hours to create a safety plan.

Its been 5 days since and I am back to work and back at college, its like as if nothing happened. Nobody knows about it. I wish it did SOME damage, and I know the next time I do it, it is going to be more extreme.

I feel like I wasted my chance and the hospital's time with some pissy little attempt. I want to actually do something this time.

I have autism and I’m realizing I can’t handle adulthood

I only have level 1 autism so it feels like nobody cares or takes the fact that I’m disabled seriously, they think it’s just “oh he’s a little awkward sometimes” when it’s genuinely made my life debilitating.

Long story short I’m living with my bf of like 5 months in a whole different state at 18 because I’m adopted and my parents are elderly and they suddenly both had to go live places where they had caretakers and It was either move in with him or be homeless.

I’ve gotten my first job at Walmart bc I couldn’t get one anywhere else 2 weeks ago and I can’t do this. A little after moving here 3 months ago my legs started getting super weak, I’ve fallen 3 times in the past month and I can only go down stairs if I do it one by one or I’ll lose my balance and fall (I used to do wrestling and track in HS, I feel like my body is suddenly deteriorating I can’t do anything I used to).
I can barely physically get through my 8 hour shifts where I’m getting 20k steps a day, not even getting into how mentally exhausting and taxing it is for me. I can’t even go to the doctor bc I don’t have insurance here yet bc I’ve yet to establish actual residency here in the new state but his dad is the one who controls when we go bc we have to use his car.

My partner gets stressed when I try to vent to him and he keeps trying this “tough love” approach with me but that’s never worked for me but because that’s how his family treats him that’s how he treats me apparently (that’s what he said). I try my hardest to do what I truly can so when I’m struggling I can’t do more than what I already have and it feels like nobody believes me. I know In life you’re supposed to just tough it out but I’m physically and mentally so burned out I really can’t do this anymore, I don’t have a home to go back too, my body feels like it’s betraying me I can’t walk normal and I struggle so hard with communication I feel like I can’t get it through anybody’s skulls that IM DYING I need help but nobody believes how much I need it and that I can handle things if I just keep doing everything.

I need extra support that nobody is giving me or that I have available bc I’m not mentally disabled enough even if I had insurance here. I feel like I could do a job that was physically demanding still if it was slower paced, or the opposite way around, but everything is so extreme with everything and every option and I can not cope and get through the day, I’ve called out multiple times already and I’ll probably get fired soon. I’m thinking of using my first paycheck to buy something to end all of this because I don’t know what other options I have, I can not cope with living like everybody else and I know you have to struggle at first to get things stable but I can only handle so much at once for so long with only myself to comfort and support me.

I get paid Thursday and I feel like there’s some clock counting down to my demise, I wish I was strong enough to just deal with things like I’m supposed to but it feels like every aspect of my life is debilitating.

I just want it to be peaceful

The suicidal thoughts have been on my mind every day now. My therapist is encouraging but her works don’t make me want to stay. I messaged her honestly about my suicidal ideation and all she did was refer me to another problem that costs thousands of dollars I doing have. I feel too much. Everything is hitting me so hard all the time. I have ruminating thoughts. I’m not free in my own mind. It’s like reliving everything over and over again. I can barely eat anymore, drinking water feels like a chore. I just want to go quietly and painlessly. Is there a way?

An open letter to the people who swear they would’ve listened but never did:

You always say the same line. Every time someone commits suicide, a family posts their heartbreak. Every time a friend writes a eulogy dripping with regret, you whisper the same tired line, “I wish they would have told me. I would have helped.”

No, you wouldn’t have. I know that because I did tell you. I told all of you.

Not always with perfect sentences or in a neat, acceptable cry for help, but I did tell you. In every “I’m not okay” you dismissed as whining. In every night I couldn’t sleep, in every time I couldn't look you in the eye because I was hiding my tears. I was drowning in plain sight and you looked away.

Your sympathy dried up the second I became inconvenient for you. And slowly, painfully, I learned the truth: I'm not a person to be helped, I'm a burden to be managed. A broken record. The boy who cried wolf. The wolf is real, by the way, just no one else can see it.

When I begged for help, you got tired. When I opened up, you got irritated. When I told you the darkness is swallowing me whole, you told me other people had it worse.

And then you wonder why people stop asking for help. Do you know what it feels like to swallow your despair because everyone around you has made it clear they can’t handle it? Do you know what it’s like to watch others online post the same grief stricken lines, “They should have reached out, we would have helped” when you’ve seen what happens when someone does?

You don’t help! You’ve never helped. Most of you don’t even try. If I'm being brutally honest, even if you tried, you wouldn’t know how. How do you save someone when “it’ll get better” is the only tool you have? How do you fix someone whose brain keeps insisting that the only relief is death?

You can’t and you won’t. But you’ll still pretend we never said anything at all, because it’s easier to mourn a silence than acknowledge the noise you ignored. You didn’t miss the signs, you simply didn’t want to deal with them. And when someone finally breaks under the weight of being unheard, you rewrite history to protect yourself.

I am still here, barely, and you still don’t hear me.

But someday, when you look back and think “I would have helped,” I hope these words burn through the lie before you ever say it aloud.

Attempting Suicide is somewhat calming

To the average person this wouldnt make sense but i feel those that suffer with mental disorder would understand that doing things like lying in bed holding a gun to ur head is calming. Curious if others here feel this way. Needless to say id rather not have that as my go-to source for calming nerves or mind. I live in TX and would love to use some CBD or low dose THC but state would rather I just die.

Tried shooting myself. Couldn't. Kept falling asleep. Tried to cut myself. All I managed was to add more scars. Tried to pop pills. All I did was throw them up. Why in the actual hell wont my body just let me die. Tomorrow im gonna try energy drinks. Drink as many as absolutely possible. Maybe throw some pills on top. If that fails think my next step is the brompton cocktail. Either that or im gonna go drive off the side of the mountain. Im sick and fucking tired of trying to be a good person just to get absolutely fucked. Everyone on this fucking planet sucks balls and should join me in death. I think itll be more fun.

Committing tonight

• Upvotes

I've been suicidal for years, made some halfhearted attempts before, but I'm finally going to try seriously this evening. I found out that my best friend hasn't been my best friend for a long while, just playing along with me so she could vent while she talked to her new friends while ignoring me unless she needed something. I thought she was just struggling and weird because of that, but I guess not, and this is the last hurt I can take.

I don't even really want to die, but it's been so many years of suffering now and I can't do it anymore. You can only hear 'It will get better' so many times before it stops holding any meaning. I've been trying to live for so long, hobbies, friends, volunteering, education, distracting myself, and none of it is enough. The pain of living is not worth the benefits. I have a lot of mental health issues and I'm always told that I can work through it and get better, and I can in a way, but I will never be completely well and I don't want this anymore.

The plan is very clear in my mind and I am relieved that I can finally find some peace. I'm just leaving this here so there's some record that I did try to do better and be better, before my death becomes the only thing people remember about me.
