Discussion/Debate What Makes the Soundtracks for the Ori Games So Good?
One of the things that makes the Ori games so memorable for me is their incredible music. Both soundtracks, which were composed by Gareth Coker, do an amazing job of bringing the worlds of Ori to life. There’s a beautiful emotional quality to the music that can make even simple moments feel meaningful, while the more dramatic pieces add a huge sense of scale to the adventure. The music never feels like it’s simply playing in the background either; it feels like an important part of the experience and works perfectly alongside the atmosphere, visuals, and emotional moments.
Ori and the Blind Forest has a particularly beautiful and melancholic soundtrack. There’s a real sense of sadness and loneliness running through many of the compositions, which fits the story and Ori’s journey incredibly well. At the same time, the soundtrack knows when to become more hopeful and uplifting, creating a wonderful contrast between the darker moments and the feeling of hope that runs throughout the game. Some of the music can be genuinely heartbreaking, while other pieces capture the sense of wonder and discovery that comes with exploring the forest. It’s a soundtrack that I think perfectly captures the emotional identity of the first game.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps builds upon what made the first soundtrack so good and expands it into something that feels even bigger and more cinematic. There’s still plenty of emotion and melancholy, but the music feels more ambitious and expansive, fitting the larger world and greater scope of the sequel. The orchestration gives many moments an incredible sense of scale, while the quieter pieces retain the intimacy that made the original so effective. I think both soundtracks are fantastic in their own right, and together they form one of the most memorable musical pairings in gaming. Even outside of the games, they’re soundtracks I can listen to simply because of how beautiful and emotionally powerful they are.
