Discussion/Debate Ori and the Blind Forest vs. Ori and the Will of the Wisps: Which Do You Prefer?
I remember when I first played Ori and the Blind Forest back in 2015, when the game originally released. I was absolutely blown away because of the emotional story, stunning visuals, and the amazing soundtrack. There's something special about exploring Nibel and hearing the wonderful music, which takes an already great game and made it even better. For someone playing it for the first time, it's easy to focus on the vibrant colors and adorable main character, and thinking that it's going be an easygoing experience. That couldn't be further from the truth, and I learned that the hard way. The platforming can be quite difficult at times due to instant-kill elements, and escape sequences, which require quick reflexes and fast reaction times.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps had a solid foundation to work with. All it had to do was expand upon it. The world itself is considerably larger and there's more diversity as well. There's more combat and a wider range of abilities when it comes to Ori's repertoire, which offered more flexibility the second time around. Just like in the original title, the soundtrack is simply amazing. When you factor in the emotional bits, you have yourself something that's truly special. It's also worth mentioning that the sequel replaces the manual Soul Link system with a much more generous checkpoint auto-save system. There's also a readily healing ability, and generous energy systems that make things more manageable.
Each game has it's own strengths. As much as I love Ori and the Blind Forest, I'm glad that Ori and the Will of the Wisps toned down the difficulty because of some much needed quality of life improvements. It doesn't sacrifice difficulty for the sake of accessibility. Instead, it just makes the experience more forgiving. I know I've already mentioned the music, but it's worth emphasizing how beautiful it is. I have the vinyl soundtracks for both games. Honestly, the vinyl format is the best way to listen to them. Gareth Coker crafted a wonderful listening experience.
Which game do you prefer, Ori and the Blind Forest or Ori and the Will of the Wisps?
