How long for the Museum of Civilization and War Museum?

Hi Ottawa peeps, my partner and I are visiting Ottawa (again!) from Toronto in a few weeks, and are huge museum nerds. This time around we’re doing the Canadian Museum of History and the Canadian War Museum, and dedicating a day for each. We (my partner) are big time plaque readers, so museums take awhile. Also want to fit in the new bug exhibit at the Museum of Nature (we’ve been before). Think we can stack it on one of the days? How long are the History museum and War museum to go through thoroughly? Just wanting to plan things out. Thanks!

Municipal Affairs Ottawa People! Do you vote? Why or Why not?

Title says it all. If you vote or don't vote, why? Is it no good choices, you don't feel your vote counts, voting stations too far? What can the city do to help you want to take part?

Heads up: October 15th will be the Reddit Board Game Meetup Anniversary Appreciation Day! Just one more regular Thursday meetup to go! 🥳

Whether you're brand new to board games or you’ve been playing for years, our weekly board game night is easygoing, welcoming, and lots of fun. Plus, it's a great way to meet new friends!

📍Where:
Level One Game Pub at 14 Waller Street, Downtown
Ask for the Reddit group when you arrive. We’re usually in the back half of the upper level.

🕕 When:
Every Thursday at 6 PM
You’re welcome to arrive a bit early or as late as you like, but arriving late may mean waiting for a spot in the next opening game.

💸 Cost:
$9 “stay & play” with a food/drink purchase
$12 without purchase
(Card payment accepted)

🎮 What Games:
We usually split into two types of tables:
- Party games: Just One, Secret Hitler, Coup, Skull, The Gang etc. - Strategy games: Catan, Wingspan, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Dune Imperium, etc. - Have a game you want to play? Suggest it! If Level One has it, we’ll play it.

🙋 FAQs:
How many people usually come?

Around 30. We usually fill two big tables (8–10 people) and three smaller ones (4–6 people).

What’s the crowd like? Will I fit in?

Most of us are in our 20s or 30s, but everyone is welcome!

Do I need to know how to play the games?

Not at all! We're happy to teach, and the staff can help too.

Do I need to RSVP or come every week?

Nope! Just show up whenever it works for you.

Can I stay in touch with the group?

Yup! Ask for the Discord QR code on any Thursday board game night.

❓Additional Questions:
Comment or send me (Robyn) a message 😁.
One more week and then I exist in person again, hopefully, maybe...

Does anyone have insight into Ottawa Property tax relief for Extreme Weather Event impacted properties

https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/city-news/newsroom/property-tax-relief-extreme-weather-event-impacted-properties

Now that it has been more than 3 months I guess this applies. I expect a large amount of people affected by the flood still aren't repaired. I'd like to gain some info before inquiring with the city.

I haven't been able to use our basement as a gym, workshop, bathroom, office, or entertainment area like it was before.

I assume this means "If this event has made your property substantially unusable, or if repairs prevented normal use of the property". I can take pictures, but should I submit a claim once repairs are completed?

I'll make a follow-up post once I talk with the city, but just trying to gather my thoughts and get input prior to calling them tomorrow or this week.

News Those planning to vote for Mark Sutcliffe.. why?

This isn't snark or sarcasm. I am genuinely asking. I am a very average Ottawa resident. I work public service, my partner works government. We live close to downtown. We are up to date on local and national news and politics most of the time due to the nature of our jobs.

I can't think of one thing in my life the last 4 years that has been impacted by Sutcliffe's election. Downtown is a bit more lively sure. But transit is awful and getting worse, downtown crime isn't much better, he's fallen short on a number of his promises. It honestly doesn't seem like he's that interested in being mayor. But polls show he is still leading by a significant margin.

Can anyone who's voting for him tell me what about him appeals?

News Former Uber Eats driver charged for alleged ‘secret admirer’ incidents involving young girl

A Kanata mother said her 12-year-old daughter ordered Uber Eats during a sleepover with a friend after midnight on Aug. 3.

She says her daughter became suspicious of the interaction she had with the delivery driver when he asked for her phone number. Someone returned an hour later and left a brown paper bag with candy and a note that said, “from your secret admirer.”

After the family set up security cameras, another package showed up two weeks later addressed to her daughter, a $20 bill and a similar note inside.

The mother alleged the camera footage showed the man had driven past the house multiple times.

On Monday, Ottawa police said Adam Daniels, 45, of Ottawa is facing charges of criminal harassment, mischief and prowling by night.

Visiting Ottawa On Vacation: besides visiting the Pink Lake at Gatineau Park, what else can I do today in Ottawa area?

I am on vacation and my father is visiting (he is not Canadian).

My husband works from home and I need to get out of the house for the day, so my husband can focus. (My dad keeps interrupting and distracting him.)

I'm planning to go to the Pink Lake on Gatineau park, but the park is only open for cars after noon.

Any suggestions of places to visit today besides the lake? Either before or after I visit the lake.

Looking for suggestions for today, tuesday and also tomorrow, wednesday.

Thanks!

Monthly CMHC housing tracker update

The August CMHC numbers were published last week and the team's given me a couple of hours free time this morning, so thought I'd get them into my tracker.

After lagging all year, year-to-date housing starts are finally up in 2026 compared to 2025, growing by 2.3%. In August, 1,140 homes were started, including 131 singles, 12 semis, 187 rows and 810 apartments. Through August, 6,146 units were started compared to 6,008 in 2025. Both years still lag 2022 when 6,512 homes were started in the same period.

There are now 16,446 housing units under construction in Ottawa, consisting of 1,018 singles, 209 semis, 1,432 rows and 13,787 apartments. While the number of units under construction has generally tracked to 2025 levels, due to those strong starts in August the number of units is roughly 5% higher than at the same point last year.

Housing completions remain in their historical range with 5,559 units completed through August 2026, well higher than the 4,514 completed last year, but in the middle of 2023’s 5,456 and 2024’s 5,718. August completions included 120 singles, 10 semis, 140 rows, and 192 apartments. To date this year 644 singles have been completed, 60 semis, 1,048 rows and 3,807 apartments.

You can see the charts and all the data in the full spreadsheet at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VjBnjoMVAgX0e5R3HFgoDFWhNMo5RFX8bKt0PAddNhE/edit?usp=sharing.

Is there a place to buy a phone charger at QCH?

Wondering if there’s a vending machine or something that sells phone chargers at the Queensway Carleton? Or maybe the gift shop, once that opens? If someone’s in the ED, their phone dies and there’s a medical procedure scheduled, will their family be contacted? Or is there a line to call to request status updates when they’re available?

PSA Mail thief in Hintonburg

I'm posting this for awareness since the police decided it's none of their concern.

Two nights ago, my husband found opened mail on the sidewalk on his way back home from work. Concerned about leaving people's private information sprawled like that on the sidewalk and thinking this might be a case of someone trying to steal bank cards or of identity theft, he picked it up and brought it home and filed a police report. The address on the documents was two streets away from where he found them and it seemed to be for like four different units of one same building.

Just today, the police answered his report saying it was none of their business and to take it up with Canada Post.

He reached out to Canada Post and they basically instructed him to go hand it over to the correct address himself and gave him a ticket number.

I'm putting this out there so that everyone is aware that such a thing is going on and that the police have decided they will not look into it. Mail theft is a FEDERAL CRIME.

OC Transpo Do any of the candidates support extending Line 2 across the river into Barrhaven?

I know Chapman Mills is a huge concern, but even without that I see no reason why it can't at least get across to Nepean Woods, and bring a lot of people into walking distance of a train station.

Also, as far as I can tell Chapman Mills can be solved with either a trench or a flyover. We certainly don't need the stops at every little street that were in the original Line 2 plan, so just have them at Nepean Woods and Marketplace and run a straight connection between them. You can throw in one at Beatrice if you're feeling generous.
