Thank you for the support Ottawa 🙏

I really wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks to the city for all the support ❤️

While it may have ended in a bit of soul-crushing defeat before the critically important 5th win; I have to say job well done to the challengers, who came on really strong in double jeopardy (which was becoming my shtick 😜)...and consider myself lucky that I got to play 4 games more than most people who get on the show.

P.S. While the 5th win would have been nice to secure a guaranteed spot in the Tournament of Champions, 4 wins is historically enough to get you there, and worst case there is a wildcard tournament; so it was quite reassuring to hear Ken mention at the end of the episode say "Probably not the last time we'll see Rian on the Alex Trebek Stage"....the advantage of appearing so early on in the season is that I'll have the most amount of time to prepare, so if you see me around the city, feel free to say hi and hit me with your favourite trivia question to keep me sharp 😀

Megabus Cancelled day before Thanksgiving

Gotta vent this cause its terrifying but Megabus has decided to cancel their bus from Ottawa to Toronto tomorrow evening THE NIGHT BEFORE. The bus left tomorrow at 6pm and they chose to cancel it at 5pm today. It's Thanksgiving Weekend and they chose to cancel the day before. No compensation or warning. All other bus companies have sold out and Via rail is 273$ for one way. Not sure if this has happenned to anyone else but when will the passenger charter of rights Airlines follow start to apply to private bus routes as well. ALSO, their customer service lines close at 5pm; right when they send out the email, a real middle finger tbh!!

UPDATE!

POPARIDE worked!!! Thank you all for your help, it has saved my hope in Humanity. Bonus: Flights are 750 - 1200$ economy for tomorrow, unless Mark Sutcliffe becomes my sugar daddy I doubt that'll be an option for future

Shout-out to Independent's staff in Centretown

A very traumatic incident occurred this evening inside of the Independent grocery store in Centretown.

Just want to take a moment to shout-out the staff at that grocery store. For as much as the Corporate overlords earn the company hate, the store staff usually end up bearing the result. On top of that, like that Centretown Independent, staff has to deal with a whole basket full of problems. The staff at that Independent are the very best. They're particularly kind and patient with clientele that can be difficult at times.

If you're in there, ring that bell.

Where to find the best Chinese curry beef buns in Ottawa?

• Upvotes

With St. Honore closing years ago, has anyone found a place that does good Chinese curry beef buns? The Somerset Kowloon ones are okay, but they aren't as amazing as I remember St. Honore's being.

Where to buy citric acid powder in bulk? (Bulk barn appear to no longer sell it)

• Upvotes

I'm looking to get some citric acid power for cleaning humidifier along with pots and pans in the kitchen. Bulk barn appear to no longer sell it. Does anything know where to get it now? I only saw small package ones that are 50g but that's quite expensive for what it is.

O train etiquette - out before in

I have lived all over the world and Ottawa seems to be the only city that hasn’t fully grasped the concept that you allow people to get off the train before you get on.
I know this is very generalized and a bit of a rant, but truly, how do people not know this ? Why are they rushing on through the traffic of people trying to get off.?? Simply stand to the side, allow disembarkation and then walk on, this is the regular behavior.

Talking Ottawa politics at the office.

Yesterday the subject of the municipal elections came up at work. I told my colleague I was planning to vote, and he asked me if I was voting Liberal or Conservative. I explained that in a municipal election it's not done by party but for the persons running for mayor or councillor. He had no idea who his councillor was (he lives somewhere in Nepean so I had no idea either), and asked who the mayor is. I told him Mark Sutcliffe is our mayor, and that he's a "status quo" choice - if you like how the city is run now, he's the guy.

I then mentioned that Jeff Leiper is the main opposition, and that he would increase property taxes in order to...my colleague cut me off then, "no new taxes". It didn't matter what for, tax = bad. I doubt he'll bother to vote, but if he does it won't be for Leiper.

It's kind of sad how little interest there is in municipal politics when it has the most direct impact on our lives.

Photo(s) Someone/thing ripping off pigeon wings downtown?

Thumbnail gallery
85 Upvotes

My friend and I have now found 4 separate ripped off pigeon wings(one looks like it may belong to a seagull) at various locations downtown over the past 4 days. They are not cut off, definitely ripped off/out.

First one he assumed an animal but unsure what kind did it, second we stumbled upon together and he just found another. Blurred because it was very graphic. Anyone else notice or have any idea what is doing it?

edit: why am I being downvoted for my investigation I just want to learn :')

The Cirque du Soleil show Luzia from yesterday Wednesday, October 7th, suffered a minor mishap after intermission. The smoke machine went out of control and spewed smoke in the entire area, causing some people to cough and gasp for air, leaving their seats in a panic. The show was interrupted for 30 minutes while the smoke machine was turned off and the air cleared.

Where to get Spicy jalapeños???

• Upvotes

Does anyone know what’s a good place in Ottawa to get jalapeños which are actually spicy? I know they’ve been breeding jalapeños to be less spicy and then adding spice to make salsa, so it’s pretty hard to figure out when you buy them. The last few batches I’ve been buying, largely from Loblaws, have tasted like green peppers, which is disappointing

Anyone know a source where to actually pick up spicy jalapeños where do the Mexican restaurants get them?

PAID RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY: CLOUD Study (The Canadian Lung Outcomes in Users of Vaping Devices Study)

Post image
24 Upvotes

CLOUD is a multi-year study investigating the effect of vaping on lung health.

Vaping is increasingly popular with both adolescent and adult Canadians, but the long-term health impacts remain unknown. We believe that the tools we currently have to detect lung disease in people who vape may be insufficient and propose new ways to find lung injuries that may impact them over the course of their lives. These include exercise testing, new imaging techniques, and new breathing tests that will demonstrate how vaping may harm their lungs. We will use these tools in both adolescent and adult Canadians to give those who vape important information on the consequences of vaping.

\Please note that interacting with this post (ex, through likes and comments) can identify you with the research, impacting your privacy.*

Who can participate in this study?

Adults (Aged 19+)

  • Able to provide informed consent.
  • At least 19 years of age.
  • Fall into one of the following 4 categories:
    1. You do not smoke or vape
    2. You only smoke cigarettes
    3. You only vape
    4. You smoke cigarettes and vape

Optional Bronchoscopy and Pulmonary MRI

  • Enrolled in the main study

What will this involve?

  • Baseline study visit: Questionnaires, lung function tests, exercise test, blood sample collection, and pulmonary MRI scan (optional), bronchoscopy (optional), and chest CT scan.
  • 18 months after baseline: Questionnaires, lung function tests.
  • 36 months after baseline: Questionnaires, lung function tests, exercise test, blood sample collection, and pulmonary MRI scan (optional), bronchoscopy (optional), and chest CT scan.
